Things to do… Surf and Turf Hampton Beach is an old-time family beach with day-and-night activities for everyone of all ages . There is a band shell with free concerts and weekly fireworks, the Casino Ballroom which hosts popular entertainers and row after row of lodgings, amusements, restaurants, and shops . Annual events at Hampton Beach include a volleyball tournament, children’s festival, sand-sculpting contest, and Hampton Beach Idol contest . Alongside all of this is a luxurious white-sand beach where families can spend the day lounging and playing in the surf .

Art Appreciation Since 1974, the Prescott Park Arts Festival has successfully presented the arts to over 3 .5 million people in more than 10,000 productions with no fixed admission . The concert series and music festivals bring some of the best talent from around the globe to Portsmouth beside the Piscataqua River in beautiful Prescott Park .

Attention History Buffs Founded in 1991, the American Independence Museum celebrates what it took to create the freedoms that Americans continue to enjoy today . Located in Exeter, New Hampshire’s Revolutionary War Capital, the Museum serves its mission to promote knowledge and appreciation of the achievement of American independence . Each year the American Independence Museum hosts an Independence Day Festival in mid-July, a little later than most because it took the horsemen many days to ride from Pennsylvania to Exeter to get the Declaration of Independence signed .

Come Sail Away If the open sea is your desire, take a trip to the Isles of Shoals with Portsmouth Harbor Cruises, and discover the nine legendary islands located six miles off the coast . Settled by Captain John Smith, the Isles of Shoals have had a diverse history as a mecca for fishing in colonial times, a hideout for notorious pirates, and a resort for intellectuals . For a shorter in-land cruise, sail aboard the Piscataqua, a traditional reproduction of the flat-bottom gundalow barges once prevalent along local waterways .

Walk on the Wild Side The Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge is located along the eastern shore of New Hampshire’s Great Bay in the town of Newington . The refuge protects more than 1,000 acres along the seacoast for migratory birds and other wildlife . It is one of the longest stretches of undeveloped shoreline along the bay, and consists of mud flats, salt and freshwater marshes, swamps, ponds, streams, woodlands and fields . The refuge is open every day to the public for hiking, bird watching, photography, and other outdoor activities . Cross country skiing and snowshoeing on the trails are popular activities during the winter .

Go Back in Time Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth provides visitors with the opportunity to experience and imagine how people lived throughout four centuries of New England history . Adjacent to the city’s riverside Prescott Park, the museum is a 10-acre outdoor history museum that preserves 32 buildings that were lived in and used on this land during 300 years of the town’s history . People of all ages may explore gardens, buildings, traditional crafts, and preservation programs . Stories of the neighborhood are told by costumed role-players . Lots of educational and seasonal special events, year-round .

Island Walk Take a trip out to Peirce Island in the Piscataqua River near the south end of Portsmouth . Spend the day walking along salt marshes, tidal pools, rocky cliffs, and meadows . The island has several easy walks on trails that lead to five waterfront overlooks . The overlooks have views of the Naval Shipyard, the historic south end of Portsmouth, and the three Piscataqua bridges . The island’s Pine Grove area has a wooden bridge and stone benches, picnic tables to sit and have lunch, or stop at a beautiful water vista to get the perfect pic .
