There are so many patchwork oriented “things” on at present that I‟m sure I could spend both days of every weekend going to and doing these “things”. I did manage to get along to the North of the Yarra Quilt show, which was well worth the trip. Many quilts to inspire, in so many different styles. My vote for the viewer‟s choice was a very difficult decision to make, but I finally settled on a gorgeous art quilt with screen printed gum leaves and blossoms and lots of free motion quilting. Their committee put in a lot of work to hang so many quilts and decorate the area with lots of flowers, both fresh and paper ones (which they made). The raffle quilt was a very colourful colour-wash X-block style of quilt. There were around eight traders there, including a button trader and a couple of longarm quilters, along with the usual patchwork shops and NOTYQ‟s own trading table. Billy Jackson and I attended the Vic Quilters Spring Gathering in Campbells Creek, near Castlemaine hosted by the Goldfield Quilters I wanted to check out what other groups do for these Gatherings! We were driving through low level cloud for a good deal of the way there, which made for a rather eerie experience. There was a beautiful wedding ring raffle quilt in blue which I‟m sure had my name on it, but I missed out, again! However they invited each person to select a wrapped gift from the table upon signing in and I was also fortunate enough to win a lovely door prize. The guest speaker was Margaret McDonald who had a rather large collection of quilts to show, followed by a powerpoint presentation. The morning and afternoon tea was lovely and Billy was really impressed with the passionfruit sponge only problem was she told everyone how nice it was! From Castlemaine we detoured via Maldon and the patchwork shop and with all fabrics reduced to $15 a metre, we were tempted, and succumbed to, temptation (you would think we would have been shopped out after the recent bus hop!). We stayed in Bendigo overnight and the following day went to the White Wedding Dress Exhibition 200 years of wedding fashion. This was really worth seeing, with many of the gowns being from the Victoria & Albert Museum in London as well as some by famous international contemporary designers and modern Australian ones. In looking at some of these older gowns, some with beautiful tatted lace, and shoes, one can only marvel at how tiny their feet and waists were yesteryear! Billy‟s workshop for the origami wreath was a “sell out”. Thanks to Billy for teaching this very enjoyable class and we look forward to

seeing the results at forthcoming meetings. I have to admit that I have not progressed any further with my wreath since the class, as I have been very busy making Christmas presents and Kris Kringle gifts – Christmas is coming up so fast! Speaking of Kris Kringle gifts, a reminder to all that we will once again do a Kris Kringle at our December meeting - if you provide a gift, you may take a gift. The theme for the November meeting is very appropriately, the Melbourne Cup, and with this in mind let‟s wear hats to our meeting! There will be a prize for the best hat! Obviously I have had a very busy month, a situation not likely to change in the near future, so please, if you come to my house at present, please leave your spectacles and white gloves at your house! Looking forward to catching up with you at the next meeting, but in the meantime …

Happy Stitching Mary Wylie

OPEN PLACE, RICHMOND

By Doris Gloger For the last 12 months, I have been teaching patchwork to some wonderful ladies at Open Place in Richmond. Open Place is the support network for Forgotten Australians (people who grew up in homes or orphanages in the last century). The patchwork class is a part of their Life Skills Program. Earlier this year Seabreeze Quilters offered to lend two of our Singer sewing machines to the group to use on an ongoing basis. This has been greatly appreciated by the patrons and staff of Open Place, as many of the people may not own a machine, or travel on public transport to the classes which would make transporting their own machines impossible. Most of the original participants have either finished or are close to finishing their first-ever quilts, and others have completed a Christmas project and moved onto a bag to take to classes. It has been a very enjoyable time for me personally, I‟ve learnt so much about the hardships and endurance of these women, and it‟s a privilege for me to able to teach them some creative and useful skills.
