Waste Classification Tests
Flammables: A waste is a flammable hazardous waste if it has a flash pointbelow 1400F. Each sample is screened by exposing a small sample to an openflame on a spatula for 1 to 3 seconds. If the sample sustains combustion, then itis classified as a flammable liquid or solid.
Corrosives (Acids and Bases): Using pH paper, liquids are tested byimmersion and comparing the strip to a color chart. For solids, add equalamounts of water and then test. If the pH is greater than 10, then classify as abase. If the pH is less than 4, the material is classified as an acid. In between, the waste is considered inert.
Reactives: If, upon addition to water, the sample reacts with the evolution ofheat, gas, or violent reaction, the sample is considered reactive.
Oxidizers: Oxidizers may be acidic, basic, or neutral pH. Oxidation capabilitycan be determined with potassium iodide [KI] test strips. A drop of hydrocholoricacid reagent is added to the end of the strip. A drop of solution is added to thewet end of the paper. Note the color change: Blue, purple, or black indicates anoxidizer. Oxidizers should be stored separately from non-oxidizers in theappropriate area.
Information gathered during the waste screening should be recorded on the itemwhich is then placed in the appropriate storage area corresponding to its hazardclass.
Negative test results in all categories for unknowns will default to the toxicclassification.
NOTE: Only personnel properly trained should attempt these procedures. Allsafety precautions should be observed. Personnel use these procedures attheir own risk. Sweetser & Associates is providing these procedures forinformation purposes and is not responsible for any injury or damage resultingfrom these procedures.
Sweetser & Associates
General Precautions1. Respect the chemicals2. DO NOT Eat, Drink, Inhale any chemicals3. Work away from flames or ignition sources4. Wear eye, hand, and body protection5. Keep test tube in rack during testing6. Only use small amounts of unknown7. Label container with any testing information
PRECAUTIONS – STOP IMMEDIATELY AND LEAVE AREA If you detect:
A. Fumes or smells – Possible inhalation or fire hazardB. Crystals on surface – potential shock sensitiveC. Reactions e.g. dissolving materials, bubblingD. If container can not be opened safely, carefully place container in tub
and store separately from other chemicals
Classification Procedure1. Examine integrity of container
A. LeakingB. If container is in a bag, container may be leaking or spilledC. If container is bulging may indicate under pressure. Opening may spray
unknown2. Read container label
A. Ingredients, usage, or cleanup instructions1. Acid in name store with Acid2. Water = not usually flammable3. Nonflammable cleaners are usually bases, some are acids
B. Warnings1. Keep away from flame = FLAMMABLE2. Causes burns, skin irritation = Corrosive
3. Examine Container TypeA. Brown bottle = possible pesticide or light-sensitive (e.g. photochemical)B. Glass stopper = possible old laboratory chemicalC. Aerosols are usually Flammables, Oven and window cleaners = Bases
4. Prepare work area to test sampleA. Cover work areaB. Remove all flamesC. Keep container closed when not in use - Only open container long enough to
take sample portion
UNKNOWNS
If substance is still unknown, place material in separate container and label with a ? .

pH Test for Corrosivity
DefinitionpH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. This is measured on ascale from 0 (strong acid) to 14 (strong base/alkaline). A pH of 7 is neutral.
Supplies• pH Paper• Pipette/Dropper
Safety PrecautionsA. DO NOT Insert Test Strip into container
B. Place liquid in lid, test tube, or other container. Do not use the containerlid since contamination or reactions may occur.
C. Watch for reactions that can indicate a more dangerous chemical.Possible reactions that indicate a water reactive chemical are - bubbles, foaming, and smoke.
D. Colored liquids may give false readings. Observe fringe of pH paper forreading.

Water Solubility Test
DefinitionThis test is designed to test unknowns for reaction with water. Positive results canindicate a range of hazard classes from water reactives to pesticides to corrosives.Extreme care is needed for this test to prevent injury.
Supplies• Test tube• Pipette/Dropper
Safety Precautions• Use only small amounts of unknown to minimize adverse reactions!• ALWAYS Add chemical to water not water to chemical!• Gases may ignite – KEEP AWAY FROM FLAMES

Oxidizer Test
DefinitionAn Oxidizer reacts with other materials or produces oxygen. Oxidizers are potentially fire orexplosion hazards – USE EXTREME CARE. Metal “rusting” is a common example of oxidizingreaction.
Supplies• Potassium Iodide (KI) Paper• 33% Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)• Test tube• Container• Pipette/Dropper
CAUTIONA reaction with the acid indicates possible water reactive or base (e.g. Calciumcarbonate)
Instructions1. Add 2 drops of HCl to the Oxidizer (KI) Test Paper2. Using pipette (for liquids) or small sample (for solids), place unknown on paper.3. Watch for adverse reaction4. Color change
OXIDIZER
A. Turns black immediately, then changes to white = very strong oxidizer.B. Black, purple, or blue/black = oxidizer.C. Slow change or faint color = maybe very weak oxidizer.
NON-OXIDIZERD. Small black spots or light purple color is a negative test.E. Other colors are typically indications of highly reactive substances or strong acids or
bases. Use caution with further tests.

Cleanup and Disposal Instructions
1. Prepare three disposal containers (e.g. 1-liter soda bottles) by labelingA. Acid Sampling WasteB. Base Sampling WasteC. Flammable/Poison Sampling Waste2. Place test tube into appropriate waste container. Empty pipets can be disposed of
as non-hazardous. If necessary, retest waste and sampling equipment.3. Place tested waste into appropriate hazardous waste storage location. Ensure
sample is labeled with test information and attach waste characterization form tocontainer.
4. Place waste container in appropriate hazardous waste storage location.5. Clean-up testing area (if necessary, wash down area)
