SAN DIEGO ASSOCIATION OF YACHT CLUBS

he San Diego Association of Yacht Clubswas founded for the purpose of fosteringand encouraging participation in yachting

and to promote its public interest in the SanDiego Area. The association’s officers and directorsare chosen from the ranks of member club StaffCommodores. I look forward to working with aterrific board this year.

The association provides a forum wheremembers can exchange ideas, coordinateactivities, and foster fellowship in the boatingcommunity. We take an active role providinginput to local and state governments on mattersof interest to the yachting community. Ourassociation members are proud to offer classesand seminars in various boating related classesincluding safety and first aid classes, as well as sailand power boat handling and race management.

Our Association member clubs offer JuniorSailing Programs that include sailing lessons andon-water safety training. These programs areavailable to non-members as well as members.After all, junior yachtspersons are the future ofyachting and boating.

Our member clubs hold annual charity eventswhich raise thousands of dollars benefiting thecommunity at large.

Each year the Association recognizes membersof the boating community. We reward theseoutstanding individuals by presenting thefollowing:

• Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the YearAwards are presented for outstandingachievement and participation in yachting.

• Paul J. Hartley Award recognizes a junioryachtsman or yachtswoman under the age of 18for both service to the community and ability onthe water.

• Alonzo De Jessop Award recognizesindividuals for their service to the yachtingcommunity

• John M. Rumsey Award recognizes theindividual achievements in yachting outside ofSan Diego County

This calendar is a collaboration of memberclubs to develop a well-rounded calendar ofevents for sailboat and powerboat racers, charity

The San Diego Association of Yacht Clubs annuallypresents the “Yachtsman of the Year” award to a singleoutstanding sailor. The recipient is selected foroutstanding achievements and contributions to thesport of yachting. The selection is made by a vote of theSDAYC member clubs at the Decemberassociation meeting. It is presented at theOpening Day of the Yacht Club to whichthe “Yachtsman of the Year “ belongs.

Four deserving nominees were consideredfor the 2017 Yachtsman of the Year:

MATT STRUBLEMission Bay Yacht ClubMatt Struble was US Moth class president andregatta chair for both the A-Cat and Moth NorthAmerican Championships. Significantly, thefoils he used to win the Moth North American’swere ones he co-designed and built himself outof solid carbon fiber. Some of Struble's notableaccomplishments include:• 3rd at A-Cat North American Championships • 2nd in North America (the winner was fromEurope)• 1st in Moth North AmericanChampionships• 2nd at the DN ice boat worlds (of over 100boats)

WILLEM VAN WAAYCoronado Yacht Club Willem Van Waay is known internationallyfor his sailing knowledge and hisparticipation in the development of bothjunior and adult sailing programs. Among his notableachievements are:• 2017 J70 World Champion• 3-Time J70 Mexican National Champion• Melges 24 National Champion• 1st Place in 2016 Melges 32 Worlds• 4-time J24 National Champion• Farr 40 World Champion• Etchells North American ChampionVan Waay is featured in articles published byScuttlebutt, Sailing Anarchy, Sailing magazine and more.He is well-known within the sailing community forlending a hand to sailors of all ranges of experience.

LARRY ANDREWSSouthwestern Yacht ClubLarry Andrews has been racing all his life. Growing upin Hawaii he would watch the TransPac racers finish offDiamond Head. He vowed he would one day compete.

To make his dream happen, he bought hisSummit 40 and began preparing for theTransPac race by competing in everyoffshore race that he could find. Racing with

family and friends, he used his talent as askipper to assemble an excellent team. He

spent 6 years preparing for the race and in2017, won Division 5 in the TransPac. His boat

Locomotive was also the first of the day 1 startersto finish. His Corinthian spirit represents the values

of his yacht club and the sailing community.

NEVIN SNOWSan Diego Yacht ClubNevin Snow was raised by accomplished sailingparents and surrounded by an elite group ofjunior sailors. They pushed each other daily onand off the race course. Snow is a successfulcollegiate and national level junior sailor and arecent graduate of Georgetown University. He isworking hard to break into the internationalranks. His 2016, & 2017 Accomplishments

include:• College Sailor of the Year for ICSA(Intercollegiate Sailing Association) – for2nd time.• US Match Race National Champion andthe Governor’s Cup winner – for 2ndtime. • 49er North American Champion

• Winner of the New York Yacht Club Morgan Cup inboth 2016 & 2017 Snow has embarked on a full-time49er Olympic Campaign with brief action on the WorldMatch Racing Tour. He is recognized by his club as amentor to young sailors and a great friend to fellowracers.

The San Diego Association of Yacht Clubs is proud toacknowledge all of these fine sailors and the clubs thatthey represent. The Selection of the 2017 Yachtsman ofthe Year was not finalized at the time of publication but,regardless of the choice, a fine sailor will be named theYachtsman of the Year.

Cortez RacingAssociation (CRA)was founded in1979 by sailboatracing enthusiastson Harbor Island in

San Diego Bay. It has grown to become an influential raceorganization and is now established as a non-profit,sanctioned Sailing Association whose purpose is to promotesailboat racing and other sailing-related activities in the SanDiego area. CRA is run entirely by unpaid volunteers servingapproximately 250 members, whose spirit of “giving back”drives them to dedicate time and effort for the cause ofimproving, expanding, promoting and glorifying the sport ofyacht racing.

CRA’s signature event each year is the summer Beer CanSeries, organized jointly with Silver Gate Yacht Club. Nowin its 37th year, this 10-week regatta kicks off right beforeMemorial Day and attracts more than 120 boats eachWednesday evening to race in ten different classes on SanDiego Bay, making it the largest competitive sailing event inthe region.

CRA has established close ties to other important sailing

organizations. These include the United States SailingAssociation (USSA), the Southern California YachtingAssociation (SCYA), the San Diego Association of YachtClubs (SDAYC) and the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet(PHRF). These relationships, together with ties to all thelocal Yacht Clubs, ensure that CRA members are welcomedat regattas throughout the region.

Our races use the PHRF handicapping system, and thereforewe work closely with PHRF of San Diego. We need theirrules to keep racing fair and their ratings to make racingcompetitive. Since CRA races attract more handicap racersthan any other venue, we consult closely with PHRF on classbreaks each year. The CRA calendar boasts 12 races, usuallyone per month, in addition to the summer Beer Can series.

We invite all sailors to join CRA and enjoy the most excitingracing on the bay. CRA needs members to come forward tohelp run the Association by serving on the Board ofDirectors and by volunteering for Race Committee work.Race Committee is a great way to broaden a sailor’sunderstanding of tactics and strategies that can provide anedge the next time they are jostling for a front row start.See you on the water!
