Pre-characterisation in Irrad. Lab. (Christian)

Installation at H8 & in-situ characterisation

Beam tuning (Adrian Fabrice - Many thanks)

Normal beam

SCT priority

25ns beam

MDT & TGC priority - 1st Level Trigger tests

SCT, PIX, TRT, TileCal also running

Post-characterisation

Installation at H8

De-installation

(Abbreviated from the original plan due to the PS startup problems and subsequent SPS "beam scrubbing" run)

G.F.Moorhead SCT Testbeam Update June 2003, SCT Week @ Uppsala

Testbeam May - June 2003

Schedule

Two periods:

• 3 days of SCT priority with normal beam, 4.8 s spill length- Random trigger => TDC cut 10ns/25ns as usual (40% efficiency)

• 7 days of 25ns beam, multiple users, 2.6 s spill length (fewer events / spill)- Synchronous trigger => No TDC cut (all events in time - we hope !)- Included 1 day of SCT priority for magnet & material studies which excluded other users

Multi-user periods worked reasonably well.

Pixels relocated to NA45 (upstream position) to reduce conflicts

Opportunities to use Magnet or low momentum beam were very limited

G.F.Moorhead SCT Testbeam Update June 2003, SCT Week @ Uppsala

Testbeam May - June 2003

Program

• One module as anchor (efficiency reference at 1 fC, 150 V), barrel 00010

• Standard performance studies at several positions across modules

• Threshold scans (Qthr) at bias combinations:Irradiated: 350 V, 500 V, 400 VUnirradiated: 150 V, 300 V, 200 V

• Bias scans (Vdet) at thresholds: 0.9 fC, 1.0 fC, 1.1 fC, 1.2 fC, 1.5 fC

... then the fun stuff ...

• Relative timing adjustment (signal cable length): all modules +/- approx 3 ns

• Synchronous beam (25ns) timing scan - efficiency versus trigger cable delay

• Tracking studies at 180 GeV/c, magnet 0 A, 2500 A, 5000 A (~ 0, 0.8, 1.6 T)

• Low momentum multiple scattering study : 50, 20, 10 GeV/c pions

• Target studies, 10 mm Tungsten target immediately upstream of modules to look GEANT4 simulation

Comments...

• SCTLV3 gave many problems... too many dead channels; several channels failed in service during the ~ 3 week continuous use

• The two barrel modules irradiated unpowered & unbiased wereoperated at Vcc = 3.8 V as no useful performance could be found atVcc = 3.5 V

• Noise in H8 (12 modules in proximity, no metal cover plates etc.) ~100 - 300 electrons worse than lab., as previously experienced

• Details, including all standard characterisations in lab., and beforeand after at H8, can be found at: http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/GROUPS/INNER_DETECTOR/SCT/tbMay2003/

Next beamtest : September 2003• Currently scheduled:

– SCT main or co-user run 28 Aug to 2 Sep– ATLAS Common DAQ run 3 to 8 Aug

• However, the Research Board has approved 2 week extension to compensate for the time lost due to the beam scrubbing run

• Likely but not certain we will have ~ 2 weeks in September including the Common DAQ run

• Program: - Standard studies of the modules irradiated during this year, including the Large Gain Spread barrel- Common DAQ run ... minimal port of existing Mustard/Slog readout to ATLAS DAQ-1 to participate in common triggers

2004• Last planned year of SPS beamtest• Emphasis on ATLAS Integration testing

– Common DAQ– Common clock & triggers >>> common events– Tests of Level 1 Trigger– Dataflow (ROD s-links to ROS etc.)– Event Filter – Offline software - reconstruction etc.

• Within this context, the Inner Detector is planning a combined Pixel / SCT / TRT common run

.... Now in early discussion phase - please contact Gareth if interested in following developments.
