The AAAE was allocated with a kiosk at the Annual Atwood Sidestreet. The kiosk was part of the

organization’s outreach to help bring new members and create awareness amongst the campus community about the American Associaito of Airport Executives and the fun activities that are brought to its members

A LinkedIn session was organized by the AAAE in association with the Career Services to help

members understand how to use LinkedIn and build their networks. The session was held at the ATC Lab in Headley Hall and members benefited greatly from the valuable tips that were given to them.

How important is networking to students?Using good Networking skills is what will separate you from the rest of other students who are graduating. Basically, those who don’t network are much less likely to get the jobs compared to those who do network. Start networking during college by participating in clubs and activities in your university. It’s also very important to apply for and complete internships. Maintain your connections on the sites like LinkedIn to ensure that you’re putting yourself above others. You need to get yourself noticed by the hiring manager at the company or companies you are applying to. If you just apply for a job without networking, you’re not likely to even get your resume looked at just coming out of college unless you know someone or you’re doing something to make yourself above and beyond the normal applicant. This is because there are just so many applicants in the market right now.

What would you recommend students In regards to student organizations and national associations?I would recommend you stay at least involved in one or two organizations in your department no matter what field you’re going to be in. The more the better, it depends on your lifestyle and how much time you have. Some students have to work full time plus go to school so their level of involvement

cannot be that high because they just don’t have free time. For those students who aren’t working full time while going to school, try to get involved as much as possible. Student organizations are where you’re going to get professional associations and contacts through the people who mentor through those programs and through activities you go participate in. When you’re going in those organizations and activities ensure you act professionally and start networking. That is what will set you apart from others that do not participate.

Is there any additional advice you would give for students?Be professional and work hard. Unfortunately those skills are not always a given in the applicants coming into the industry right now. Show up ready to go for your first interview and have questions for the interviewee. You want to have yourself well prepared and not just say “Okay, I’m just going to show up and see how this goes as a practice”, because you never know if they might want to actually hire you! So stay prepared and be professional. If you come prepared you have a much better chance at get hired than those who may have experience but show up to the interview not prepared.Good luck in all your job seeking, the next five years in the aviation industry are going to be very exciting with numerous opportunities in all fields!

DULUTH ATC TOURATC JAN 04

To celebrate the new year, members from AAAE took a trip up north to Duluth to experience the air traffic control tower. Upon arriving at the

tower, members were escorted by one of the managers to the training room, where he explained the airport, operations, and the flights that operated there on a daily basis. One thing unique about the Duluth airport is the military base on sight. Controllers are responsible for the safe takeoff of numerous F-16s daily, as well as some C-130s. With all the extra traffic, controllers always need to be on their feet. From there, members were escorted down to the Duluth TRACON to view Duluth’s airspace as well as how the controllers ran it. The room had two radar consoles and one controller on duty at the time. Members were then taught about the aspects of the room, including weather, runway information, and frequency information. The Duluth air traffic control tower tour was certainly a great hands-on experience for the AAAE members as well as a great networking experience.

Students dressed in professional attire, Windsor knots pulled up to their necks for some, tucked-in shirts nicely creased on the sides, resume ready in hand, all this in preparation for their mock interview on February 10, 2012. The following panelists, who came from the Aviation Management and Pilot industry, all enjoyed the unique experience put on by the SCSU AAAE: Mark Adamski of the Airline Pilots Association; Mitch Kilian of the Metropolitan Airports Commission; Christopher Mayer of Skywest Airlines; Carl Rydeen of the MSP Air Traffic Control Tower; and Dan Sauter of Best Jets International. “All of us from the industry had a lot of fun” said Mr. Kilian, “and we were very impressed with the organizational efforts.” The event, which ran from 9am through 3pm, consisted of 16 participating students who each held a 20 minute mock interview and 10 minute questionnaire/feedback session. All of the students presented themselves with high dedication, promptness and professionalism, and each walked away from their interview with something valuable to take with them for their future. The event was made possible thanks to the industry professionals, the entire department faculty and staff, the AAAE board, and the students who participated, and a special thank you goes out to Mr. Kilian for assisting AAAE in organizing the event.

Members of the American Association of Airport

Executives together with members from the Aviation Ambassadors took part in a fundraiser involving a complete cleanup of the Husky Stadium following three Ice Hockey Games. Many members, brought along their friends to help with

volunteering. The cleanup took between 2 and 3 hours and started a few minutes following the end of the games. The cleanup involved non members, and they were scheduled to be given gift cards from Target and Apple Bees in appreciation for their assistance. The fundraiser was a great success!

AAAE is a great organization which gives their members an inside look into airports. During my membership I have seen MSP secret tunnels and the organized chaos of the baggage loading area. From the amazing view of the Tower Cab, one can

see the controllers work and the view of the sun setting while a B737 is taking off. During these tours you get to meet future contacts. AAAE gives you memories that you will never forget and contacts that you can use to further your career. - Hannah Preston

AAAE has given me the knowledge and experience necessary to create a substantial background in aviation and the business world. Through networking, hands-on experience, and different opportunities, I have been able to increase

my skills in these areas as well as market myself to future employers. Lastly, AAAE has given me and many others the opportunity for future internships and eventually jobs. With AAAE in my resume I am able to find jobs easier as well as create relationships that last a lifetime. - Peter Zenner
