demonstrate that products meet indoor air quality standards pertaining

to emissions that may be harmful to human health and the environment.SCS Indoor Advantage applies to furnishings and qualifies for the BIFMA

furniture emissions standard, while SCS Indoor Advantage Gold

certification applies to furniture plus a broader range of interior building

materials such as paint, carpet, and insulation. Gold-level certification

meets California Section 01350 IAQ standards for both residential andcommercial application. Both certifications help products qualify for low-

emitting material credits within the LEED rating systems.

History:History of the SCS Indoor Advantage Program

Companies frequently make claims about the environmental or health benefits of their products;third-party certification programswhen they are based on sound scientific criteria andtransparent and consistent proceduresoffer a way to distinguish environmental claims.Scientific Certification Systems created its first indoor air quality standard, SCS-EC10, in 2004. TheEC10 standard closely adhered to the requirements of the California Collaborative of High

Performance Schools (CHPS) and to California Special Environmental Requirements Specification01350. Many of the requirements of the International Organization of Standards (ISO) 9001-2000Quality Management Systems for Process and Quality Control were also incorporated into the EC-10 Standard.In 2006, the US Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that the Business and InstitutionalFurniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) Furniture Emission Standards would qualify forenvironmental quality credits under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)program. Also in 2006, the State of California Department of General Services adopted an indoor airquality specification for open panel office furniture.

SCS responded to these changes by incorporating both the BIFMA and new California criteria intoits EC10 indoor air quality standard. The revised standard, SCS-EC10.2, was published in May of2007 and became the basis for the SCS Indoor Advantage certification program. Just a fewmonths later, in September of 2007, the BIFMA Furniture Emissions Standards received formalendorsement by the American National Standard Institute.

SCS is again at the forefront of sustainability certification providing the first-ever multi-stakeholder, multi-attribute sustainability certification for office and institutional furniture.

level certification, based on the ANSI/BIFMA e3-2010 Furniture Sustainability Standard, sets furniture manufacturers on a path toward greater sustainability over time. Based onenvironmental and social criteria set forth in the standard, a products entire supply chain is assessed.

Certification assessment includes an evaluation of specific corporate policies and guidelines and an assessment of associated company manufacturing facilities. Products must meetquantifiable milestones of environmental and social performance at every step of development.

The quantitative assessment addresses four categories: material use, energy and atmosphere impacts, human and ecosystem health and social responsibility.

Manufacturers earn points in each of the four categories. The level brand and its numeric rating of 1, 2 or 3 indicate what threshold of certification a product has achieved. level 3 is

the highest rating. Annual reviews are required to maintain certification.

SCS provided the first certifications based on the BIFMA e3-2008 standard in 2008. Manufacturers whose products were previously certified under SCS Sustainable Choice Furniture arenow part of level.
