Reflections from

the President

Caren Zorman

The General Fund

It is sometimes known as the bane of one’s existence and

the lifeblood of many non-profits. It sometimes generates

passionate, emotional responses and/or generous, heart-

felt donations that lift up the individual(s) and the institution that they donate to.

Yes, it’s the dreaded four-letter word that we all must acknowledge – dues.

With the start of the secular New Year, dues notices were mailed out to all mem-

bers. You may recall that a few years ago, the Board voted to move our fiscal

year from July to December. Dues letters are sent out in December/January so

that we may start our new budget cycle with the new year. The Board approved

the 2013 budget in December – a balanced budget based on dues income and

planned fundraisers.

I recognize that paying one’s dues are not fun, exciting, interesting or even sexy.

It is mundane, boring, and tedious. And yet without that revenue, we are, in a

word, “toast.” Dues pay our utility bills, payroll, custodial, our numerous ven-

dors and tens of individuals and companies that do work for us. We are, much to

the dismay of some, a small business that is totally and completely reliant on the

dues that you pay. Any reduction in dues revenue significantly impacts the way

we conduct business and our ability to pay our bills.

Over the last six years, our operating budget has shrunk by almost 50%. We have

laid off individuals, reduced services and reorganized the office to accommodate

the shortfall. And still, our budget continues to shrink. The 2013 budget is pro-

jected to be approximately $20,000 less than last year’s but our level of service

strives to remain the same.

There are many congregants, for a variety of reasons, who are on reduced dues.

Whatever your dues level, we welcome everyone to services, programs, and

events. As our regional economy slowly (very slowly) continues to improve, I

ask that, if you can, consider increasing your dues level. You can contact either

Randy Pollack, the Membership Team Lead, or me. If you cannot increase your

dues, consider sponsoring a fundraising event or paying to attend a program

when no fee may exist.

Until such time when we can upend our dues model and determine a way to gen-

erate revenue for the General Fund through alternative funding, your dues are the

lifeblood of your shul. There has not been an across-the-board dues increase in a

number of years and yet our vendors have raised our rates 1-3% year after year.

Just as you may struggle with paying your bills, so too does the shul. It is not

something that I take pride in publicizing, but it’s the truth.

I thank all of you who have increased your dues level; to those of you who are

considering an increase, thank you; for those of you who are not yet financially

able to manage an increase, thank you for your continued support and involve-

ment at Mosaic Law. May 2013 find us all prosperous and healthy.

Page 3: Scroll · 2019. 6. 19. · Page 3 The Scroll From December 23rd thru Febru-ary 1st, I have been on Sabbatical. The word “Sabbatical” comes from the Hebrew word “Shabbat,”

Page 3

The Scroll

From December 23rd thru Febru-

ary 1st, I have been on Sabbatical.

The word “Sabbatical” comes

from the Hebrew word “Shabbat,”

which literally means a “ceasing”

and is a rest from work, or a hia-

tus, often lasting from two months to a year. The concept

of sabbatical is described in our Torah where there is a

commandment to desist from working the fields in the

seventh year. Two years ago, the Board of Trustees asked

me to take my eight month Sabbatical over four consecu-

tive years in order to be able to avoid the expense of

engaging a retired or part-time rabbi to serve the needs of

our congregation during my absence, using volunteers as

much as possible. I consented to breaking up the eight

months into smaller segments and will continue to do so

over the next two years. Admittedly, this portion of my

Sabbatical has been draining both emotionally and physi-

cally as I have officiated at no less than nine funerals

during this period. I cannot recall such a compressed span

of time with so many losses. But certainly the toll is much

greater on the families who have suffered losses of their

loved ones. I pray that G-d will comfort all of you who

are in mourning and that your friends, family and congre-

gation will continue to give you strength.

As I returned to my duties on February 1st, I was excited

about the future, both personally and for our congrega-

tion. My first Shabbat back was on February 2nd and we

honored our Adult B’nai Mitzvah students who have been

studying weekly for more than a year for this very special

occasion. On February 23rd, I hope that all of you might

consider joining us for Shabbat services as Judy and I will

be called to the Torah for our Ufruf, which is a custom

for the bride and groom prior to their marriage ceremony.

While we wish that we could invite everyone to the

wedding in March, I do hope that you know that the Ufruf

is our opportunity to share our happiness with our Mosaic

Law Family. We are so grateful to our Women’s Network

for changing the date of their special Shabbat so that our

family could all be here together with us. The D’var

Torah at the Ufruf will be delivered by Rabbi Avi Taff,

and his two brothers, Josh and Ari, will participate in

leading the Shabbat Shacharit and Musaf services. We

kindly ask that if you are able to attend the Ufruf, please

email or call my secretary, Mary Blumenstein to let her

know so we can ensure that there will be plenty of food

for the Kiddush Luncheon afterwards. She can be

reached at (916) 488-1122 x19 or via email:

[email protected].

Beginning the second week of February, our Search

Committee will begin formal interviews for a second

clergy. I am so grateful to all of you who have volun-

teered to participate in our Chai Five Campaign, which

will enable our synagogue to engage a dynamic rabbi or

cantor to assist me in meeting the needs of and helping to

grow our congregation. Without your support for this

important endeavor, we would not have been able to

achieve our goal to have someone in place by August. I

am very much excited about this development and hope

that you are too. Over the next few months look for

announcements when rabbinical/cantorial candidates will

be invited to spend a Shabbat with us.

Thanks to all of you who were able to join us on Saturday

night, February 2nd, at the KOH Library for the dedica-

tion of a new virtual Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit, donated

by Baryohay and Tamara Davidoff. The Davidoffs have

been most generous in contributing a dedicated computer

to the KOH showing of the Dead Sea Scrolls and other

exhibits from Jewish Museums around the world. In

honor of Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month, we also

dedicated a 'special needs' mezuzah.

On February 5, 2013, from 7pm to 9pm, the KOH Library

and Cultural Center is hosting the Forum ‘Taking Control

– Health Care Directives From A Jewish Perspective’ to

educate our congregation and community about health

care directives from the perspective of Conservative

Judaism. I am grateful to Frank Gumpert and Gil Linver

for coordinating this program. I so look forward to join-

ing my esteemed panelists: Attorney Frank Gumpert;

Medical Ethicist Meg McClaskey; Physician Andy

Kincaid, M.D.; and Moderator Gil Linver. Please be sure

to put this date on your calendar now.

Don’t forget to join us as we celebrate Purim on Saturday

night, February 23rd at 7pm, for the Megillah Reading in

the Sanctuary. If you have never experienced Purim at

Mosaic Law, you should plan to join us, in costume of

course. The following day, Sunday, February 24th, we

have our Annual Purim Carnival and Silent Auction.

There will be many fun carnival games, a bounce house,

and a petting zoo! Auction items will be on display both

Saturday night and Sunday for you to bid on. Some of the

items we have for the auction are tickets to the B Street

Theatre, the Crocker Art Museum, the Jewish Contempo-

rary Museum in San Francisco, Exploreit Science Center

in Davis, Pipeworks, Sunrise Rollerland, Fairytale Town

of all ages and enjoy this fun-filled day!

Lastly, I wish to thank all of our volunteers who have

stepped up to lead services, Shiva Minyanim and read

from the Torah on weekday mornings, afternoons and

Shabbat during my sabbatical. Your volunteer efforts not

only have insured that we have continuity during my

absence, but truly make a statement that our synagogue is

resplendent with talented and skilled lay leaders whose

commitment to Judaism and to our synagogue are not only

unlimited, but priceless.

Hoping to celebrate with all of you at these many wonder-

ful February events which are just a small sampling of the

numerous learning and social opportunities offered to our

congregation and community.

B’shalom,

Rabbi Reuven H. Taff

Rabbi (Continued from page 3)

What spaces are available for rental at

MLC?

The MLC campus includes multiple ven-

ues for hosting a private event. Venues

include the Grand Hall, Foyer, and KOH

Library and Cultural Center, all housed in

the Center at Twenty-Three Hundred

(The Center). In addition, the Courtyard,

Social Hall, Middle Room, Sanctuary,

Youth Lounge and assorted classrooms

are also available for rental.

Do I have to be an MLC member in

order to rent a space?

No, you do not need to be a member of

MLC to rent space. MLC members re-

ceive a 10% discount when renting any

venue in The Center. In addition, any non

-members wanting to rent our facilities

must have a member sponsorship agree-

ment in place.

Whom do I contact regarding room

rental?

For any program in The Center, please

contact the Executive Director, Laurie

Schmalzel. For any program using the

administrative or sanctuary buildings,

please contact the Office Manager. The

Courtyard is not rented in isolation; you

must also rent another, adjacent space

(e.g., Social Hall) in order to have use of

the Courtyard. Note: If alcohol will be

served, regardless of the location, you are

obligated to follow guidelines mandated

by MLC's liquor license.

What is the kashrut policy?

All events involving the Jewish commu-

nity, including but not limited to syna-

gogue-sponsored events, other Jewish

community events (Shalom School, Fed-

eration, etc.), and private parties hosted

by MLC members, must follow the exist-

ing campus kashrut guidelines that the

rest of our campus follows: All food must

be prepared in a kosher kitchen (e.g.,

MLC, Einstein, other approved kitchen),

supervised by an approved mashgiach,

and all pre-packaged foods must have a

hekhsher, as needed.

Why do we have "preferred caterers"

for Kiddush lunches and what does

that mean?

When hosting a Kiddush lunch, you may

use any individual or catering company to

provide and serve the meal. However, the

host is obligated to pay the kitchen fee

and the mashgiach fee when using an

"outside" caterer. If you choose one of

our preferred caterers, both the kitchen

fee and the mashgiach fee are waived.

These caterers are preferred because they

have ample experience in the MLC kitch-

en and are knowledgeable about kashrut

and the serving requirements of a Kid-

dush lunch.

What does it cost to host a Kiddush

lunch?

Anyone may make a donation toward our

Kiddush lunch fund to help cover the cost

of food, beverages, linens, paper goods,

and clean-up. We ask for a suggested

donation of $100 in honor of a birthday,

anniversary, or other simcha. If you

would like to add a specific food that is

not typically served (e.g., creamed her-

ring), you are welcome to purchase that

item in advance, but please let the Office

Manager know of your food addition for

that week. If you would like more input

regarding the menu, the cost for sponsor-

ship is $1000. If you are hosting the Kid-

dush, such as in the case of a bar or bat

mitzvah, the cost of all foods, paper

goods, linens, service, custodial, and

kitchen and mashgiach fees (if applica-

ble) are your responsibility. Please in-

clude the "regular" 160 Shabbat at-

tendees, in addition to your guests, when

hosting a Kiddush.

What does it mean to have "preferred

caterers" for The Center?

A preferred caterer is one who has been

approved by the Board committee that

oversees the Center. Some of what goes

into the decision-making includes, but is

not limited to, experience with our facili-

ties, a variety of foods offered, a reliable

staff for supporting an event, and reputa-

tion.

Does MLC derive revenue for pro-

grams that take place on Shabbat?

During the roughly 25-hour period of

Shabbat and Holidays, we engage in a 3rd

party lease with a non-Jewish tenant.

MLC receives 85% of the rental income

as well as other revenues for these events

at the Center.
