the Scroby Sands sandbank in the North Sea.
The wind farm itself is owned and operated by E.ONand consists of 30 wind turbine generators each
rated at 2MW, along with a metrological mastwhich lies to the North of the wind farm.

Having extensive experience indealing with corrosion and specialistcoatings, Abfad Ltd were brought into refurbish the monopilessteelwork from grating elevation tosea level, using ropeaccess techniques and Abfad's unique Magnet System.
Once on the monopile structure theextent of the corrosion could beclearly seen. Blasting to SA2.5standard was carried out to removeall sections of corrosion and theexisting coating was profiled andfeathered back and the newprotective coating applied by airlessspray unit.

Abfad's patented permanent Magnet Systemhas proven invaluable in areas that can onlybe accessed by rope but need a reliablemethod of moving the rope technician closerto the working surface and anchoring themsecurely to enable them to carry out therequired work.
Use of this Magnet System provides the userwith a productivity advantage, increasing thespeed of work, such as blasting, spraying, mechanical surface preparation, welding, drilling, NDT inspections etc. by securing therope technician to the working substrate andenabling a greater precision of work.

The work by Abfad was a completesuccess with all corrosion removed andthe new coating applied, ensuring themonopile was left with optimumprotection against the elements.
The work itself was carried out in two phases to enablecomplete refurbishment of the monopile.
Phase 1 consisted of structural steelwork below thewalkway gratings being refurbished.
Phase 2 was to refurbish all steelwork below the colalrsection to sea elevation.
Walkway gratings and davit arms were removed in stagesto enable each phase to be succesfully completed beforemoving onto the next.

PROTECTIVE COATING
Once all blasting wascompleted, the met mastwas spray coated with aprotective coating in orderto protect it from furthercorrosion.
Once new ladder and clamp sections werefabricated and coated ready forinstallation, they were installed usingpowered (battery) winches to swiftly lift theclamps and ladder sections in to place andhold them steady while they were installedby Abfad personnel using rope accesstechniques. This was to ensure the supportvessel deck was not damaged during thelifting process and sea swells.

HYDRATIGHT HYDRAULIC TIGHTENING
Newly fabricated clamp sections wereinstalled by Abfad personnel using ropeaccess techniques.Trained Abfad technicians thentightened the clamps using Hydratighthydraulic equipment.

PROJECTCOMPLETEAll sections of the Met Mast Latticetower were cut and removed byAbfad's trained rope accesstechnicians, lowered using a ropeaccess pulley system and taken awayand disposed of by E.ON.
The job was a complete success andaccomplished well within schedule. www.abfad.co.uk
Abfad Limited have been established since 1996and provide IRATA approved rope access
services, both onshore and offshore.
