COM 11 – A Raisin in the Sun McLean 2016 1 Screenplay Vocabulary A screenplay is a script for a film supplemented with a list of “shots,” which are essentially blueprints for where to place the camera and what to point it at. Knowing this visual vocabulary can help you better envision the action of a screenplay. Type of Shot Definition Long Shot (AKA Wide Shot) In a long shot the subject of the shot is visible from a distance, with the primary focus being on the environment. This type of shot establishes the location and context for the scene and is known as an “establishing shot”. Full Shot A full-shot is a type of long shot that includes a subject's entire body (head to feet). In a full shot the camera appears to be much closer to the subject(s) of the shot, resulting in a narrowing of focus. This is aided by the fact that much of the surrounding environment is cut out of the frame. Full shots, by virtue of the name, allow the entire subject to be seen, head-to- toe. Medium Shot (MED.) A medium shot is a conventional camera shot filmed from a medium distance; although it is difficult to precisely define, it usually refers to a human figure from the waist (or knees) up.
