What to expect: • CARES will contact the local

SASS agency for an in-person assessment; or provide you with referrals to appropriate services.

• A SASS clinician will assess your child where they are presenting in crisis to determine if there is a need for inpatient psychiatric hospitalization or if services can be safely provided in the community.

• SASS will connect your child and family to ongoing behavioral health services.

• If your child is hospitalized, coordination and discharge planning with the hospital will occur.

• If your child does not go to the hospital, linkage to behavioral health services and crisis supports will occur to help your child safely stay at home.

CARES Crisis and Referral Entry Services

CARES is a service that handles behavioral health crisis calls for children and youth in Illinois. You should call CARES when a child is at risk to himself or others, and at any time you or others think a child is having a behavioral health crisis.

CARES will ask questions about the child’s behavior and insurance provider. Any child or youth in a behavioral health crisis who is a Medicaid or Medicaid Managed Care recipient; or has no insurance can receive a SASS screening.

If you are unsure whether a child meets criteria for SASS services, call the CARES line at 1-800-345-9049 (voice), 1-773-523-4504 (TTY)
