Marion Hollins won the Women’s United States Amateur Championship in 1921 and was the first Captain of the Curtis Cup Team in 1932. Pretty good, but get this. She was one

of very, very few women to have ever had golf course architect behind her name and oh what an interesting story that is. Marion was responsible for hiring Alister MacKenzie to design Cypress Point Club and Pasatiempo Golf Club. It is indeed right to say that Cypress Point Club simply would not exist had it not been for her keen vision. It would also be accurate to say that the par 3 16th would look very different if she had allowed Dr. MacKenzie to have his way. She did not. And how’s this? She was ultimately the reason Bobby Jones hired Dr. MacKenzie to design Augusta National Golf Club.

And this….Glenna Collett Vare was born in

Connecticut in 1903 and started to play golf at age 14. She was a student of Ernest Jones and a member of the American team that won the first Curtis Cup played at the Wentworth Golf Club in England in 1932. Also that year she won her first of a record 6 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships and went on to win 2 French Women’s Championships and a Canadian Women’s Championship. She won 59 Championships in total and then retired at age 56. Since 1953, the LPGA has awarded the Vare Trophy to the golfer who has the lowest average strokes per round in professional tour events. Gene Sarazen called her "the greatest woman golfer of all time."

And finally….I am lucky to enjoy the wonderful

company, wisdom and collaboration of Jason Taylor, Todd Keefer, John McNair and Tom Addis. We meet weekly and speak almost daily. These PGA Professionals are the essence of our success as a section and I will remain in their debt.

PGA MEMBER

ROSS FISHER, PGAGOOSE CREEK GOLF CLUB

Spotlight

Ross is co-owner of Goose Creek Golf Club in Mira Loma, a generous host to the Inland Empire Chapter Championship for several years. He

has been a PGA member since 1993, but started in the golf business in the North Florida Section in the 1980's at Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Florida. In 1992, Ross made a big transition moving to the Aloha Section where he began to work for his mentor in the golf industry, J.D. Ebersberger, who is currently COO of The Palms Club in Palm Springs. He started as Operations Manager at Mauna Kea Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii before moving over to Hapuna, an Arnold Palmer design course. Eventually, the membership and many golfers in Southern California had the chance to get to know him when he came over to his current position in partnership with J.D. Ebersberger back in the late 1990's. He embodies what a PGA Professional should strive to be on a regular basis, whether at his home club or serving on the Section's Board of Directors. The Inland Empire Chapter honors to spotlight Ross for his contributions to the game of golf and the PGA of America.

Ross Fisher, PGA

Thanks to the support of the Southern California Section officers and board, and a dedicated Section staff, the SCPGA took a giant step to move into the high impact world of bringing golf

to schools. Last August the SCPGA Board approved moving forward with TGA (Teach, Grow & Achieve) with a partnership that would provide the Section an opportunity to work with elementary and middle schools in North San Diego County and North Orange County.

The Section feels that boys and girls of elementary school and middle school are most impacted and impressed whether it be academics or sporting activities. By impacting the students with golf, that choice will lead to more opportunities to participate in the game as they grow older and attend high school and college and, of course, in life as well.

So many times a boy or girl student has only soccer, softball, basketball or volley ball, not golf, to choose from for

an activity in school and by the time they get to high school, for example, they have no experience with golf and therefore may not participate. The SCPGA aims to change that and impact the student’s choice for the future, and develop golfers for the future, which will in-turn impact the golf business at Section facilities and for Section PGA golf professionals.

There are over 300 schools in North San Diego County and North Orange County combined. The SCPGA anticipates over 50 schools participating during this Fall’s programming and then growing steadily in future years.

The SCPGA/TGA Golf in Schools Program is a high impact program and a long-term commitment by the Section to grow the game of golf and develop golfers in schools as well as through the SCPGA Neighborhood Golf Program, the SCPGA’s popular junior golf tournament program, the SCGA’s Youth on Course Program, PGA Junior League Golf, the annual Drive, Chip & Putt competition, the SCPGA Jr. Alumni Association and the 3-Hour Challenge to name a few programs that are available.

On April 11, Tustin Ranch Golf Club played host to 25 young adults from the Boys and Girls Club of America. The youngsters were visiting Southern California as part of

their Annual Keystone Conference. One of the many programs offered to youth through the Boys & Girls Clubs of America is Keystone, which is a program that promotes character and leadership among teens ages 14 to 18 years old. Every year, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America hosts a teen leadership conference for over 1,000 club members traveling from all over the world, whom have exemplified excellence in the area of Keystoning.

One of the highlights of the conference is the “Career Experience Opportunity,” where teens visit local businesses and learn the “behind the scenes” operations of companies. Golf was chosen as one of the industries the teens had an opportunity to learn more about. Through this experience, the teens were shown first-hand the many career opportunities in the golf industry, perhaps inspiring them to consider a career in golf.

General Manager Steve Plummer, GCSAA, PGA Director of Operations James Spadoni, Superintendent Javier Avalos, PGA Instructors Erik Horve and Ken Klisz, and Food and Beverage Manager Brian Penny, all gave their time throughout the day to discuss

By PGA Player Development Regional Manager, Nikki Gatch, PGA

their responsibilities at the facility. The attendees were given a tour of the entire facility, including the kitchen, cart barn, golf shop and practice facility. They learned how the facility operated balancing golfers, a restaurant, weddings and other private parties. They enjoyed listening to Steve and James talk about how they became interested in the golf industry and how diverse it is. They were treated to a clinic by Erik and Ken and some even hit golf balls for the first time. Superintendent Javier Avalos

educated them on the maintenance equipment used on the golf course, the different grasses on the grounds, and how important a well maintained golf course is to the success of the facility. Food and Beverage Manager Brian Penny discussed the many facets of food service the facility is involved in on a day-to-day basis and how important it is for his team to be focused and communicate.

The attendees certainly received a well-rounded introduction to our

industry and I am certain these gentlemen inspired some young people that day! I would encourage you to take advantage of any opportunity to showcase our industry and your daily responsibilities to young people – it is rewarding and encouraging to see their enthusiasm for our game and our business.

Since its inception, the Southern California PGA Foundation has been establishing and growing programs for junior golfers. The SCPGA Junior Tour has been the place to play for junior golfers in Southern California with programs for every level of competitor from the Garb Junior Development League to the Players Tour to the Toyota Tour Cup.

Neighborhood Golf was developed as a means to expose the game to non-golfers by going out to the communities and helping the customer experience the game for the first time.

These programs have continued to grow and expand, however the SCPGA felt they were missing one audience - local schools. SCPGA Golf in Schools, in conjunction with TGA, recently launched and is truly the final piece to the SCPGA Junior Player Pathway. From beginning to end, juniors have every necessary step at their disposal to begin, continue and excel at the game of golf.

Throughout the Pathway, PGA Professionals are integral to every step of this process. With Neighborhood Golf, a golf course can serve as a Preferred Facility by offering specials to new golfers and providing instruction to encourage new people to play the game. Golf in Schools is a great way to gain new students as you meet the children through after school programs or at summer camps. PGA Junior League provides the first taste of on course play in a fun environment. The juniors then can move through the SCPGA Junior Tour, continuing with golf instruction to hone their skills along the way. As the SCPGA continues to work with their PGA Professionals developing golfers, everyone benefits in the process of creating lifelong customers and ambassadors for golf.

If you think about it, this quote can explain why we do business with one vendor over another. It could be the reason why Mr. Jones chose a specific instructor.

It could explain whom we chose as politicians for national office and how you might choose a doctor. It can also be the reason why someone else received a job offer, though you thought you were more qualified.

Competition in the job marketplace is greater than ever. The PGA of America is comprised of 27,000 men and women professionals, which is 5,000 more people than ten years ago. Golf course closures have outpaced openings for eight consecutive years. In the current economic climate, succeeding and standing out in a job search will require more than just professionalism, experience, competence and education. Most people you are competing against in a job search will also have those qualifications.

I have heard of a person who stands out compared to all of their peers. When they talk to their golf ball, it always listens… When they make a hole-in-one, the rest of the players at the course buy them a drink… They hold the course record at courses they have never

played…The cart attendant tips them for buying a beer… They hit the ball out-of-bounds on a par 3, just to make par the hard way. They are the “Most Interesting Man in the World.”

Imagine if the “Most Interesting Man in the World” walked into an interview --- Do you think that they would have an advantage if education and experience were equal? Do you think that they would have an advantage if competence and professionalism were unequal?

Although they may not have applied for a job, every Club would probably want them on their staff. There is a clear and simple takeaway from the “Most Interesting Man in the World.” They are interesting!

Being interesting creates stories and conversation, which leads to personal connections and shared interests. Similarities create likability and the greater likelihood for a job opportunity. People like to be around fun, energetic and interesting people. No one wants to do business with someone who is boring.

In addition to focusing on professionalism, experience, competence and education, being able to identify and communicate the answers to these questions will help you stand out in a job search:

• What makes you unique?• What makes you interesting?

“All things being equal, people do business with people they like. All things being unequal,

people do business with people they like.”

IT’S NOT JUST MENTAL...By: Don Parsons, PGA

I recently had the familiar situation of sitting in my office with a competitive golfer telling me that she had lost her confidence. She's been hitting the ball shorter

than expected yet she's afraid to go after it.

"I think it's mental," she said near the end of our meeting.

Let's start with this simple fact: "The ball has no awareness of a player's mental state when it is struck by a club." During the impact interval the ball gathers a great deal of information, AND NONE OF IT IS MENTAL.

Simply stated, in that .004 seconds of contact the ball only learns whether it is struck on the sweet spot by a club whose face and path are aligned in a way that will send it towards the player’s intended target. When that is not occurring, players will understandably "get mental." Assessment - After an interview and listening to her tell her story for over 30 minutes, I assessed the areas of her game that were giving her trouble. We found that, for a variety of reasons, her club head path was moving left of the intended line an average of 12 degrees with her driver. Her misses were either weak and right or a big pull...Hmm? Analysis - With her 12 degree left path, she would need to have a face that stayed well open to that path to hit playable shots. When she goes after it, she squares the face to the path and hits hard pulls. The hard pull isn't playable and causes her to be afraid of swinging aggressively. Solution- The solution for this player was to show her the things that were causing the left path and help her understand why her solid hard swings were moving the ball left. We worked on a series of drills to develop a feel for her new intended path. We set short-term benchmarks that would allow her to see that she was progressing towards her intermediate performance goals of qualifying for the US Amateur and winning a collegiate event next year.

A pretty swing isn't always a good swing. We owe it to our players to help them develop swings that perform. It is our responsibility to know our craft well enough to do so.

When performance doesn't match expectations, it is easy to play the mental card. Don't cop out - in most cases there is a swing related reason for their fear.

In March, the PGA Board of Directors met with the Executive team and staff in Palm Beach Gardens

for our Spring Planning Session and Board meeting. It was a very productive week, capped off by the Board winning the annual Board vs. Staff golf match at the PGA Country Club. Here is a summary of some of the exciting things that came out of our meetings.

Task Force #1PGA President Ted Bishop appointed

a task force to look into growing the game through non-traditional golf ways. It is composed of a diverse group of individuals who bring a varied perspective on the game to the table. Members of the Task Force include Ted, PGA CEO Pete Bevacqua, Mark King, Melvin Bullitt, Tom Dundon, Damon Hack, Arlen Kantarian, Ashley Mayo, Bode Miller, Dottie Pepper and Tim Finchem. Although this PGA-led Task Force will maintain a long-term lens, its efforts will focus on developing concepts that can be quickly implemented by PGA Professionals and the golf industry.

Task Force #2Following the PGA Annual Meeting

in November, Ted created a Workplace Task Force to address the many issues facing the future of the PGA workforce. Our own Tom Addis serves on the task force. This group will look into many topics and then bring recommendations to the Board on the future standards for PGA membership, including apprentice and university education, membership recertification and member education. They are also charged with looking for ways to better support increased compensation opportunities and further career potential for current and future PGA members. The Board had extensive dialogue on the issues facing us and the progress the task force is making. With more time needed to develop strategic

thinking and present a comprehensive plan, we eagerly await their future input.

PGA Strategic PlanPete Bevacqua and PGA staff continue

their work on a new strategic plan for the association. The latest version was presented to the Board for comments and input. The two-pronged focus will be on serving the member and growing the game. Everything that the staff does and that we, as Board members, do should always be aligned with meeting these two worthy objectives.

Additional key items discussed at our meetings included:• An update on the inurement study by

CFO Rhona Aime - final results to be presented at our June board meeting

• The Finance Committee was renamed the Investment Committee and will focus on oversight of the Reserve Fund

• A new Member’s Merchandise Program will launch in April. The Program will better serve our members with fair and affordable pricing and the product line will feature the top brands in golf. Go to PGA Links to check it out.

• A new PSA campaign will launch in April to promote Get Golf Ready.

• A rebirth of the PGA Foundation including a rebranding to PGA REACH and a formalization of our partnership with former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani

• An update on golf in the 2016 Olympics

• A review of all PGA meetings and gatherings

• A report on the continuing improved conditions at our golf properties

There are a lot of positive things happening within the PGA right now. It’s a pleasure to be involved on your behalf at such an innovative and exciting time for the association. As always, your comments and input are welcome and appreciated. I can be reached at [email protected].

With only a week remaining in the Spring Series, the Player of the Year points races on the Players Tour are getting tight. The Spring Series will conclude on May 24-25 at Empire Lakes Golf Course for the Bridgestone Spring Series Championship. The Bridgestone Championship is open to all players that have placed first in their age division in any Players Tour event during the Spring Series.

The SCPGA Four-Ball Championship at Oak Valley Golf Club became the site of another dominant PGA Professional performance. This time, PGA Professionals Roger Gunn,Tierra Rejada Golf Club, and Paul Holtby, Tom Barber Golf Center, were the main attraction as they took on a full field of 120 PGA Members and Apprentices. What set them apart? How about an 11-under par 61, leading them into a four stroke victory thanks to 12 birdies, four more than any other team, and 9 out of 10 on the par fours! A trio of teams trailed the Champion team at 65 (-7), but the day belonged to Holtby and Gunn.

Special thanks to the Oak Valley Golf Club and PGA Director of Golf Mike Pearson and their amazing staff. Also, a very special thank you to Superintendent Jorge Robles and his crew for having the course in superb condition following

In 2013, Michael Block, PGA (Arroyo Trabuco G.C.) made an amazing run in Southern California PGA tournaments. During that run, he captured the Imperial TPS Series at Saticoy by a single shot with a score of 142 (-2). In 2014, he would trail Grant Strobel, PGA (Fairbanks Ranch C.C.) by a shot after Strobel shot 69 (-3) in the first round of this year’s championship. Block finished this year with the identical scores as last year, 70-72 for the same 142 total, but after Strobel returned his afternoon 73, the two were locked in for a dramatic playoff finish. The duo was dominant in their performance during the 36 hole event and no other professionals were within 5 strokes of their two-under par total. Their play carried over into the playoff as each player had birdie putts on the demanding par five 18th hole and after Strobel missed a delicate sliding effort, Block took advantage of an uphill look and made his 18 foot birdie to defend his title.

The 2013 SCPGA Player of the Year, Michael Block, will regain the top spot in the standings over Steve Holmes, PGA (Westlake Village G.C.) by a mere 19 points and the race at the top remains very tight for the 2014 honor. This championship wasn’t possible without the support of Imperial, Tour Lock Pro, Pro Compression, PGA TOUR and Pepsi. We can’t thank them all enough for their support of the Imperial TPS at Saticoy Country Club. Our special thanks to the Saticoy Country Club, PGA Director of Golf Tom Szwedzinski, his staff and the membership for hosting the championship!

In 2013, Chris Starkjohann, PGA and Michael Block, PGA teamed up to shoot 60 at the Yamaha Senior-Junior Championship at Jurupa Hills C.C. and win by two over three teams. In 2014, the duo teamed up to fire 61 on Sycuan Resort’s Willow Glen Course to win by three over a quartet of teams. After playing their first 10 holes in two-under par, the pair played their last eight in nine-under par. That flurry provided the three shot cushion and secured back-to-back Yamaha Senior-Junior Championships for Starkjohann and Block.

Special thanks to Yamaha for their support of the Yamaha Senior-Junior Championship. In addition, we want to thank SkyGolf, Sterling Cut Glass, NYX Golf and Pepsi for their support of this year’s championship. SPONSOR HIGHLIGHT

We are a leader in the payments industry. With more than 30 years of experience, the ability to process on different platforms and our many carefully selected and valued vendor relationships, Ultimate Payment Solutions can accommodate all your payment-processing solutions.

We understand that every business is unique and requires its own particular needs. With so many options available, Ultimate Payment Solutions can help you determine which solution is right for YOUR business.

In an industry with many different pricing plans, POS terminals, retail and virtual terminals it can be confusing to many merchants. We come from the approach of education, determining individual needs and creating opportunities for merchants to analyze and grow their business. We create individual pricing plans for each of our merchants. They do not all fit into a “Flat Rate” or “Tiered Pricing” structure. At Ultimate, we ONLY price our clients on a “Cost Plus” structure. This way YOU know EXACTLY what is being paid to the card brands and EXACTLY what is being paid to us for processing those funds. No secrets and no hidden fees. Complete transparency. 100% WHOLESALE PRICING.

Another effort that is very important to Ultimate’s Team is our "Ultimate Giving" Project. This is our way of thanking you, our merchants and showing

that giving back to our community should be a way of life.

Ultimate donates a portion of its income to two major charities: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Disabled American Veterans. Every dollar that we process creates a direct contribution to these two charities. Please join us in making a difference.

We understand that you currently have a processor in place, so as a SCPGA sponsor and partner we would appreciate the opportunity to show you what processing with Ultimate will look like. Allow us to meet some of your team and hopefully show you how we can be of benefit and service to YOU. Please take a look at our website for our full menu of services, YOU will find it very comprehensive.

Over the years they have migrated down from Laos, Burma and China to find more fertile earth and easier ways of life. Today their arts and handicrafts of silver, teak and silk are valued pieces for visitors and locals alike to buy and treasure.

The city of Chiang Mai has evolved considerably over recent years and it has an abundance of museums and art galleries, cafés and bars. There are over 300 Buddhist temples in the city with some of the finest and oldest Temples in the Kingdom.

Hotels and restaurants cater to all tastes and feature local specialties and international cuisine. This is also the best place in Thailand to go trekking, explore the jungle by elephant or glide down its

tranquil rivers on a bamboo raft. This cool northern climate and its caring, friendly people will stay in your memory for a lifetime.

Desert Chapter

San Diego Chapter

As the season starts to wind down in the Desert Chapter, the tournament season for PGA Professionals and Apprentices continues to be in full swing with many more great events just around the corner.

PGA Professional Dennis Foster was, once again, host to the Annual Foster Cup at Ivey Ranch. The event consists of both a Pro-Pro division (9 holes best ball & 9 holes scramble) and a Pro-Am division. Congratulations to the team of Mike Mitchell and Butch Sheehan for their victory in the Pro-Pro division. The duo shot 12 under par, 58 to win by two shots over the team of Josh Garber and Jim Wilkinson.

Thank you also to Host Professional Nik Remer, PGA; of Avondale Golf Club for hosting the Desert Chapter Spring Four-Ball event on April 14th. The team of Butch Sheehan and Dave Magdziasz shot a score of 6 under par 66, to win by a shot over Joe Johnson and John Klug.

Upcoming EventsMay 28- DC Sponsor Appreciation Event at Indian Wells Golf Resort; June 3-4 - DC Championship at Mountain View C.C.; July 1-2 - DC Senior Championship at Mission Hills C.C.

Inland Empire Chapter

The Match Play Championship final was played on May 7th at Goose Creek between Kenny Pigman and Michael Drake.

Kenny started off on fire, making birdie on 3 of the first 4 holes. After 9 holes, Kenny was 1 up. Both players traded blows on the back 9. As they stood on the 18th tee the match was all square. What drama for the match play championship as they played one of the toughest finishing holes in our chapter. Kenny went on to par the hole and Drake made a bogey. Congrats to Kenny Pigman for winning the 2014 IE Chapter Match Play Championship!

Congratulations to Michael Drake

NOTE FROM THE SCPGA PRESIDENT

Consider this…. annually in December we take a moment to recall our fellow PGA Members that have passed away and to recall their life in service to the game and business of golf. There are times when our fellow Members and Apprentices fail to hear of those who have passed away during the year and today I wish to share a bit of sadness and some eternal gratitude. In March, Larry Centeno, a PGA Member since 1999 and a teacher of the game at River Ridge Golf Club for the past decade, died at the age of 71. Following a wonderful and touching presentation of our Heritage Award in the Metro Chapter at Yorba Linda Country Club, we lost Emil Scodeller in January at the age of 83. Emil, always a gentleman, was a Life Member Century, elected in 1988. Speaking of gentlemen, Bob O’Connor left us this month and left a volume of memories on and off the golf course. Bob was a fixture at Van Nuys Golf Club. A face of the PGA and a flattering one as he taught and played the game and participated in all things related to player development. Bob was a young 78. And our own Pat Chartrand, a classic to be sure and another Life Member Century spent an exceptional 34 years as the face and identity of Rolling Hills Country Club. Pat died in February just before his 80th birthday.

All of these colleagues have left a mark and a better Association for all of us. We will remember them by continuing with kindness, with dedication to our Association and to one another as PGA Members and friends….

The big news here in the San Diego Chapter was the outbreak of fires last week. This had a big impact on our local golf industry with Callaway, Taylor Made and Titleist (among others) all having their operations impacted by evacuations

on shooting 65 in the Web.com Monday qualifier last week - with that score he qualified for the South Georgia Classic. Michael shot rounds of 75-70 to miss the cut by one shot. Congrats on the awesome playing Michael!

We will be losing our Vice President from the IE PGA Board. Rick Wooten, PGA has accepted the Head Pro Job at Reidy Creek Golf Course in Escondido. Congratulations Rick! We will miss you at all of our meetings and tournaments! Good luck to you and your family!

Our next Chapter event will be the 2014 Pro/Scratch Championship at Victoria Club on June 4, hosted by PGA Professional Jeff Cross.

and the like. Luckily there was no damage reported within our golf family. Of particular note was the impact at Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad, where monster flames whipped around the golf course burning right up onto the property.

The SD Chapter Spring Meeting at Bernardo Heights CC was held on April 14. Special thanks to Monte Hanson and crew for being such gracious hosts. There was an educational fitting presentation by Connor Crail and Corey Newman of Callaway Golf. Team honors to Ferguson/Mahlberg/Merryman/Szoka at -14 and to Henson/Krause/Linville/Timlin at -13. Low individual results were: Michael Griffin -2, Tom Wilson E, Dean Tonneslan +1, Scott Mahlberg +1.

The annual Danny Street Pine Glen Shoot-Out by Hooleys was held on March 31 at Sycuan Resort. Top honors to Chris Starkjohann -8 and Bruce Nakamura/Jeff Munak -7. The format was 36 hole eclectic.

Big thanks to Jim Coleman of Callaway Golf for sponsoring our ProScratch event at Santa Maria CC on March 10th. A great day highlighted by the 3 team playoff for 1st which was won by SMCC's own, Mike Valdez & partner Gene Berban.

At the Elkins Ranch ProAm on 4/16, Steve Holmes & Ryan Kennedy tied for Low Pro at 69.

Be on the lookout for new dates: Summer Stroke Play at Village CC on 6/16 & Alisal Pro Am at the Ranch Course on 6/23.

WSCGA CLUB DONATIONS TO WSCGA FOUNDATION BENEFIT DESERT GIRLS'

HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS

Thanks to Indian Ridge C.C. and Palm Valley C.C., two Desert high school girl’s golf teams will each receive WSCGA Foundation grants. For the second year in a row, Indian Ridge Women's G.C. has supported the Palm Desert High School Girl's Golf team with a $5000 Foundation grant and invited the team to lunch and to play their course. Having successfully raised funds for a $5,000 grant for PDHS last fall, the women's club staged another fundraising event and invited the team to play the Arroyo Course and join their coaches for lunch following the tournament that was attended by 90 Indian Ridge members. The club was able to raise $5,000 which will support the Palm Desert Girl’s Golf Team. Two members of the team participated in the Kraft Junior Challenge on Monday May 31 at Mission Hills C.C. - Mackenzie Raim who will play for UNLV Rebel's in the fall and Jiyoon Jang who will be a Junior next fall at PDHS.

The Palm Valley Women's Club has a long history of supporting the WSCGA Foundation and, through their "Piece of Cake" Tournament, the women's club has raised over $75,000 for grants and scholarships over the past ten years. This year's efforts benefitted the Coachella Valley High School Girl's Golf team in the form of a $5000 grant plus 10 sets of Wilson golf clubs, team shirts and golf bags. On April 3rd, Coach Zuniga and the Coachella Valley High School held a heartfelt program at the high school, where both faculty and the team spoke, often emotionally, about how much the award and golf equipment meant to not just the girls, but to the Coachella Valley High School community. In attendance were Palm Valley C.C. members, Sandy Woods, Jeannie Ayers and Linda Anderson, as well as the Head Golf Professional, Malia Folquet. Also in attendance was Kathy Hughes, WSCGA Foundation President and Deb Long, Assistant Executive Director of the WSCGA Foundation. The Foundation arranged for the team to meet Lizette Salas at Mission Hills C.C. after attending the Kraft Nabisco Champions Junior Challenge. Upon hearing of Palm Valley’s and the WSCGA Foundation’s generous grant to the club, Lizette matched the $5,000 grant to the Coachella Valley High School program. She spoke to the girls about the opportunities golf can provide and that most importantly, they should work as hard academically to pursue their educational goals as well.

REGISTER FOR THE DRIVE,

CHIP AND PUTT CHAMPIONSHIP!

The 2014 Drive, Chip and Putt Championship (DCP) was a huge success, attracting more than 17,500 boys and girls ages 7-15 from across the country. The National Finals took place at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, April 6, and were televised by Golf Channel.

“I think anybody who saw it on Golf Channel or were there to personally observe would concur that it was beyond any reasonable expectation,” said USGA President Tom O’Toole Jr.

Thanks to the expansion of entries, future Drive, Chip and Putt Championships promise to expose even more young people to the game. In only its second year, the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship will nearly triple the number of local qualifying spots, expanding to more than 50,000 playing opportunities at 256 host sites throughout all 50 states during the months of May, June and July—including several sites in Southern California.

Top performers at the local level will advance through sub-regional and regional qualifiers in August and September. The top 80 performers – 40 boys and 40 girls – will earn an invitation to the National Finals at Augusta National on Sunday, April 5, the day before the 2015 Masters.

Registration is now open, so there is still time to register your son or daughter for this exciting, innovative skills competition at www.DriveChipandPutt.com.

SYMPOSIUM ON AFFORDABLE GOLF

The SCPGA had a strong presence at the fifth Annual Symposium on Affordable Golf, held recently at Dairy Creek Golf Course. The primary focus of the symposium is to encourage open discussion within the golf industry, where ideas can be exchanged and best practices shared - ones that promote the health and sustainability of the game and business of golf.

In addition to the Grassroots Network, GCSAA has launched a web portal that will serve as a hub for issues impacting the golf course management profession. The portal contains information on key GCSAA issues including ADA, fertilizers, labor and immigration, pesticides, the value of golf and water management. Compliance information is also available for assistance with EPA, OSHA and Department of Labor issues.

GCSAA is committed to assisting not only our members, but allied golf associations at the local, state and national levels. For more information on the Grassroots Network or to access the government relations portal, visit www.gcsaa.org.

CALIFORNIA ALLIANCE FOR GOLF

In attendance at the Symposium on Affordable Golf was SCPGA Advisory Board Member Craig Kessler, known also for his pivotal role as the SCGA's Director of Governmental Affairs, who served as an opening presenter at the forum. Joining Kessler in the photo is SCPGA Member Michael Lautenbach, representing the Southern California Municipal Golf Association (SCMGA).

SCPGA Member Jim DeLaby from Monarch Dunes G.C. was a presenter at the Symposium on Affordable Golf. Delaby provided insight on MDGC's player development program: LEARN GOLF, packed with creative ways to attract new players to the sport and retain them in the game. He was joined in the session by co-presenter GCSAA Member Tom Elliott, CGCS, also from Monarch Dunes G.C.

Greetings Rons, I hope you can clarify the USGA Rule on “Yardage Devices”. I am our tournament chairman for our club and I have a responsibility to be better informed on this matter. Many of our members use a GPS yardage application on their smart phones. Is this within the rules, since the phones contain so many items that would seem to be contrary to the local rule? Thank you, Ted

Dear Ted,Thank you for your question. I

also think the matter is confusing, but I am quite sure I will be able to help you.

It seems that almost everyone is using some type of distance measuring device when they are playing golf. However, it is most important to determine in any tournament you enter, or any club event, that measuring devices are allowed. In order for a distance measuring device to be used and avoid penalty, a USGA Local Rule must be invoked by your competition golf committee or your golf course. I refer to Page 136, Appendix 1 of the USGA Rule book, for the proper wording of this Local Rule. Ted, if this local rule is not in effect, the use of any such device results in DISQUALIFICATION. Recommended USGA verbiage:

The USGA and the R & A, for clarification considers two types of DMDs or Distance Measuring Devices. STAND-ALONE DEVICES, such as Lasers and GPS units: “If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge

or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc.) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.” Fairly simple, however, you use the other type of device, and it needs some further clarification. Ted, you use the DMD device that is called a MULTI-FUNCTIONAL DEVICE.

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL DEVICES include mobile or smart phones and tablets. As you know, mobile phones have thousands of applications which make these devices very useful. Many golfers commonly use a GPS application available on their phone for determining yardage distance to the hole. If the “DMD Local Rule” is in effect during the competition or used at your course, these devices are allowed under the Rules. The application being used measures yardage distance must use the same guidelines as the STAND-ALONE DEVICES.

First, the mobile phone application you use for determining “Distance” cannot include any information other than distance measurement (that is, wind speed, temperature, elevation, humidity or club recommendation). If you use such a program, you are in breach of the local rule and penalty is disqualification.

Second, other applications installed on your phone, whether or not they are used, would render your phone use as a DMD, in breach of Rule 14-3. They are, thermometer, wind speed

application, humidity, air pressure, etc. Also included, any application designed to analyze the golf swing. Again, these breaches are similar to the prohibitions regarding STAND-ALONE DEVICES.

Third, considering the above problems, if one does not use the multi-functional device or features, or use the phone for distance, the phone may still be used for communication, or information on the Rules of Golf.

Fourth, there are other applications “that can be present or installed on a multi-functional device regardless of whether the device is being used to measure distance. Decision 14-3/16.” For example, I use a GPS on my smart phone for yardage distance; I have also installed an application which works as a “LEVEL”. I specifically use this very clever device to measure slope of a putting green when it is my responsibility to select hole locations for a tournament. If I used this “Level” device during a round of golf to check slope of a putting green, I would be in breach of Rule 14-3, and would be disqualified. However, if I was just checking whether a bench or ball washer was installed level, no problem – no penalty.

Ted, as a further suggestion to you and my fellow PGA Golf Professionals, and members of local tournament committees, spend a little time consulting the USGA website that includes very informative web pages which further clarify this complicated issue.
