What you’ve been up to Water was the theme for two

recent Beaver Scout events. Eighty competitors decorated

bottles for the Gloucester District Beaver Scouts water

rocket competition, launching

them from six strategically-placed sites. And over in Surrey,

nothing could dampen the enthusiasm at the 4th Farnham

(Tongham) Beavers annual waterfight.

Jenny Winn introduces exciting activities and wants your opinion on them

This issue contains a four-page pull-out of activities for you to try as part of

the Programme Development project. These will help us to gather feedback

about the Balanced Programme from Beaver Scouts themselves, so please

take the time to run these activities, record the responses and return them.

2012 GamesThe London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will soon be here, bringing

in sportsmen and women from around the world. We have produced an

extra supplement to help you and your Beavers engage in this great event.

Contact [email protected] if you haven’t received one.

What are you doing? We want to hear from Colonies around the UK who have been running

exciting or unusual activities. Do you have an interesting meeting place?

Have you had particular success in recruiting adults or been involved in

a newly-formed Colony? How do your Beavers help their local community?

We have recently visited Dorset, East London and Yorkshire to speak

to Beavers and leaders to get a real feel for Scouting at a local level.

The final round upYour Beavers supplement has fewer pages than usual because of the extra

supplement. The next issue will be back to full size and we will round-up some

of the ways you celebrated the 25th birthday of Beaver Scouts this year. If you

haven’t told us yet, now is your opportunity.

Double, double troubleOne set of twins in a Colony could cause some confusion. But Beaver Leader Tracey Garnier of the 11th Broadstairs St Andrews Scout Group has four times the puzzle with four sets of twins. ‘They even have trouble identifying themselves in a photograph,’ she said. To complicate meetings even more, there are three Matthews and two Daniels among the sets of twins.

Well-travelled BearLucky Logger is the mascot of 1st/36th Doncaster St Peters Beaver Scouts. Every time a Beaver goes on holiday, he goes too. A flag and photograph is put on a map where they have been. There’s a rumour

Logger may be visiting Father Christmas in Lapland. Here he is as the star attraction at an 8th birthday party.

Take it to the topA Beaver Scout and his Cub Scout sister have

climbed all of the Wainwright Fells of the Lake

District. Lewis and Fiona, of the 14th

Hudders field United Church Marsden Group,

climbed the 214 hills and mountains, learning

how to use a rope, ice axe and crampons. They

are pictured here with leader Gillian Howarth who

joined them to reach the summit. Lewis delivered

a presentation to the rest of the Colony. a presentation to the rest of the Colony.

Get your Beavers to bag a badge while

they eat what’s good for them.

Your Colony can have fun learning

how to:

• create sandwiches and wraps with healthy,

tasty fillings

• make colourful, juicy and tasty fruit salads

• balance different types of food for a healthy diet.

The Healthy Eating badge is sponsored by the Fresh

Produce Consortium’s Eat In Colour campaign. ‘It’s a

great way to encourage Beavers to enjoy fresh fruit and

vegetables and develop healthy eating habits,’ says

Free workshops and activitiesPets at HomeFun workshops for Beavers can help them gain

their Animal Friend Activity Badge at Pets at

Home stores during the school holidays. The

workshops will be run by trained in-store

advisers covering how to care for small animals, fish or

reptiles and types and quantities of food they need.

Beaver Scouts will learn about the right habitats for their

pets and how to ensure they receive the appropriate level

of exercise. At special picnic times, every weekday at

2.30pm and weekends at 4pm, Beaver Scouts can watch

animals being fed a healthy meal.

Pets at Home offers great products, tips and advice

to keep your favourite animals happy and healthy. From

specialist food and training aids, there is everything a pet

owner needs. There are over 290 Pets at Home stores

across the UK. To find your nearest one visit
