zona: How long have you danced at Paula Carr Dance Academy? Why have you stuck with this place for so many years? Katy: I have been at PCDA for 8 years. I have stayed at the studio because we are like one big family. zona: What makes Paula Carr Dance Academy such a great place to dance? Katy: It is a professional studio with great teachers but still allows us to have fun. zona: Tell us some of your greatest life accomplishments so far on the dance floor and what exciting stuff lies ahead for you in the near future. Do you dance for Saguaro High, or are you on their cheer squad? Katy: Just trying my hardest at whatever is thrown at me. Exciting stuff for the future includes dancing/competing as an Elite. I dance and as a member of the Saguaro Performance Dance Co. zona: Tell us about one of your greatest accomplishments off the dance floor in the last couple years of your life. Katy: Maintaining good grades (Principal List) throughout my entire school days and always being the best possible friend and person that I can be. zona: Where is the coolest place you ever performed with Paula Carr’s Dance Academy or on your own someplace else? Katy: Disneyland for sure! zona: Do you have dance coaches? Tell us a little about them. Katy: Yes, I have many dance coaches. I admire all of them for different reasons. zona: Do you consider Dance a sport? Briefly explain. Can it be as grueling as football? Katy: I definitely consider dance a sport because it involves hard work both physically and mentally. We have to train our bodies to learn new things, practice them endlessly and it is competitive. I would say it is just as grueling as most other sports. zona: What are your goals? What are the top 3 things on your bucket list before you turn 25? Katy: My goals are graduate from college and do a lot of traveling in the

United States and internationally. zona: Fave restaurant in town? Fave kind of food? Fave TV show? Fave band? Top two songs on your iPod? Fave place to hang out on a Friday night? Katy: Fave restaurant: Oregano’s (Been going there since I was born). Fave food: SUGAR. Fave TV show: Don’t have one. Fave band: I don’t have one because I like a lot of different types of music. Top 2 songs on iPod: Good Girl by Carrie Underwood and Lights by Ellie Goulding. Fave place to hang out on Friday night: Just like to hang with my friends at one our houses. zona: Do you want to give a “ZONA shout out” to your teammates and/or parents? Go ahead and say anything you want for approximately 15,000 readers to read! Katy: To all of my teammates and family, thank you

for always being there. Whether it is dance or something else, you should get involved and stay active. It’s a great way to make new friends and explore different possibilities.

Walk ins Welcome!

ZONA: What is your favorite type of medium? GEORGIA: I’m always trying new types of art, so that’s a hard question! Probably photography though! ZONA: How many different types of art do you practice? GEORGIA: Well, I have my photography business, so that’s pretty constant, but over the years I’ve done pottery on the wheel, a lot of portrait work in charcoals and pastels, sewing, painting, and a lot of mixed media pieces. ZONA: How long have you been practicing art, is this something that you are going to be doing for a long time? GEORGIA: I’ve always loved art! One of my favorite things to do as a kid was to go to the art museum with my sketch pad and try to recreate famous pieces. I hope to be able to call myself an artist my whole life! No matter what career I decide to go into, art will always be my passion. ZONA: If you could spend one day with any artist dead or alive, who would it be? What would be one thing that you would want to talk about with him/her? GEORGIA: Steve McCurry the photojournalist. He’s famous for his photograph, “Afghan Girl.” He does an amazing job capturing people’s souls and experiences in his photos. I would just love to follow him around for a day! It would be really cool to watch him work. To be a photographer that captures the natural elements of people so well, you have to have great communication skills. He’s so talented. I’d love to learn by watching him. ZONA: What are your favorite types of things to photograph? GEORGIA: People, definitely. My favorite photos are from some of my mission trips down to Mexico. The kids that I work with while I’m there live in so much poverty. Their eyes have seen a lot, and their faces hold a lot of feelings. I also have met really amazing people while there, and it’s cool to photograph people who tell stories. The photos I take bring back emotion and memories for me, and I like when they can do that for someone else as well. ZONA: Which do you prefer art or photography? GEORGIA: I would say that photography is a form of art.

With Their New MS iPad Program, Tesseract School, Is Quickly Becoming The MosT InnovaTIve school In The valley

lefT: Maddie A. & Hannah I. work on school work on the iPad.miDDle: Fifth graders Hannah I., Mary Jane M., Maddie A., Lauren B., Mikabella P. and Sophia P. learn and discuss on their iPad.righT: Sophia P. works on her “digital classroom” before discussing her answers with fellow classmates and educators.

For this interview, ZONA sat down with four fifth grade students–Mary Jane, Sophia, Nick and Will–who are quickly becoming more immersed in the MS iPad Program, which is highly integrated into the 5th grade curriculum. Tesseract is all about being an innovative school, so a program like the MS iPad Program really hits home with young students. Tesseract is a student-centered school, meaning that their educators turn the class back to students for their input. They are not just a lecture school, which data shows is yesterday’s way of teaching, and their students retain more being in a student-centric learning environment.

zona: How do you use the iPad in your classes? Mary JanE: We use our iPad for typing reports or when we have questions during warm-ups or ways; we also use them to discuss questions that our educators ask. Sophia: With our iPads, we pull info down from Fronter, our digital classroom, and then work on our answers together or individually before discussing our answers with our educators. It’s really an interesting way to work. Will: We are also using our iPads as our class organizer, which is our planner; we put our assignments and our schedules on the iPads. niCK: In music and band class we use our iPads to learn to play our instruments and hear what they sound like. zona: Do you use you iPad to share files with your classmates and teachers? Sophia: Yes, we share files and our papers using Google Apps. niCK: We also share lots of interesting work like if we draw something on Comic Life, we can share it with our friends. Will: We also use them in music or dance class as a digital instrument.Mary JanE: Sharing fun projects and our work with classmates. zona: Do you think the iPad is helping you to learn better than you would without one? Mary JanE: We’re still learning similar materials, but now it’s easier to keep track of our work and develop really good habits. niCK: I also like that we don’t waste as much paper. We are more enviornmentally friendly by using our iPads. zona: Do you think your iPad makes school more interesting? Will: Everybody really likes using the iPad. It makes our lessons more interesting and different. The classes are the same, but we are able to work individually or collaboratively with our classmates. Sophia: Plus, our lockers are cleaner now since we started using the iPads. Everybody is more organized and we don’t ned to have several notebooks for each class. ZONA: How much of your school work is done on the iPad? Group: Between 85-95%. zona: What is your favorite app to use on your iPad? Will: Garageband and Homerun. Mary JanE: Docs AS is really cool for presentations. Sophia: I like Comic Life for designing comics. niCK: Gravulous is an interesting science app using planets. I also like strategy games combined with learning. ZONA: Have you ever used an iPad before coming to Tesseract Middle School? Group: Yes. Mary JanE: But we are learning in another way, and it makes school even more interesting. We have lots of fun using our iPads, but we now incorporate that learning into fun using awesome technology.

Have you heard of a sheep with blue wool? Well, a couple of animal breeders from Russia had claimed

sometime ago that they bred sheep with natural blue wool.

On an average a hen lays 19 dozen eggs in a year.

Llamas will spit at other llamas in order to establish the pecking order. A llama who has been mishandled, feels abused, or threatened may occasionally spit at humans.

Sharks are the only known species to never suffer from cancer.

The Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic, a full service pet hospital, with boarding and grooming services has been serving Scottsdale for the past 60 years and is located conveniently on Thomas and Scottsdale Rd. and open from 7:30 am to 11:00 pm daily.

We are excited to join In the Zona magazine to present our NO BITE program to as many kids as possible.

Did You Know? Statistics show that 4.5 million (+) people are injured annually by dog attacks, and children make up 60% of these attacks, 30% of which are perpetrated by the family dog. Too often it is the lack of educating our children on dog safety and how to interact and treat our pets that lead to these misfortunate incidents.

It is our goal to teach students to become actively involved and engaged in changing these statistics through education. We discuss and demonstrate common mistakes that are made when encountering strange dogs, which include maintaining proper spacing, keeping emotionally calm, as well as how to react and protect oneself if they are ever attacked.

Our program is 30 to 45 minutes in length and is designed to be presented in small class settings. It has been adapted to meet the Common Core Standards for Life Science for K-4 students.

To schedule our presentation please contact:Autumn Anselmo7311 E. Thomas RdScottsdale, AZ 85251Office 480-945-8484Cell 602-696-3867

zona: How long have you been practicing Taekwondo? JoSh: I have been practicing TaeKwonDo since 2007. I was 6 years old when I started. zona: Where do you prac-tice Taekwondo? JoSh: The TaeKwonDo school I go to is called JSK TaeKwonDo. zona: Who is your teacher? What do you like about them? JoSh: My Instructor is Joseph Karstadt, he is a IV Degree Black Belt and he is the best teacher because he makes it fun at the same time as learning some really difficult patterns and moves. zona: What is your favorite part of Taekwondo?

JoSh: My favorite part of TKD is sparring and patterns. zona: How does it feel to be going for your 2nd degree black belt? JoSh: It feels amazing to be going for my 2nd Degree and cool that I have got this far at 11 years old. zona: How does a typical Taekwondo practice go? JoSh: Normally on a typical day in class we stretch, do kicks & punches, then we review all our patterns (there are 9 patterns from white belt to 1st degree) and work on learning our current patterns (there are 3 more to get 2nd degree) and then we practice sparring. zona: How do you prepare for a practice? JoSh: I go over the educational requirements that I have to know. Things like how many moves in each pattern and the history of TaeKwonDo and Korean words. And I stretch. zona: What are your favorite types of songs to listen to? JoSh: My favorite music is Hip Hop, Rock & Pop. zona: What is your favorite type of food? JoSh: My favorite food is Tuna & Cucumber Sandwiches & Pepperoni Pizza. zona: We heard International Charter School Arizona has an after school Taekwondo program. How excited are you to start that when school begins this year? JoSh: I am very excited to be doing TaeKwonDo after school at the ICSAZ because the program is being run by my instructor, but most importantly my Dad, Joe Karstadt of JSK TaeKwonDo.

zona: What grade are you in? What is your favorite subject in school? hElEna: 6th grade. Language arts is my favorite subject. zona: Who is your favorite teacher? hElEna: Miss Koutsky, Science Teacher. She is very nice and gives us a lot of autonomy in the work. We work and have fun at the same time. zona: You moved to Arizona a few years ago from France. What is one of your favorit things about France that is different from the U.S.? hElEna: I miss food like “pain au chocolate” or pastries and candies. The flavors are different in the U.S. I also miss my family and to speak in French with my friends. zona: What is your favorite thing about living in Arizona? hElEna: Here everything is bigger. Houses, cars ... it’s cool.

The weather is sunny most of the time. It is great. zona: What is your favorite French food? What is your favorite American food? hElEna: French pastry called “Mille-feuills”. My favorite American food is a cupcake. zona: Do you have any

zona: What sports do you like to play and why? Max: The sports that I play are basketball and soc-cer, but I like just about every sport, so I will play whatever my friends are playing or whatever we are playing in PE. My favorite sport is definitely basketball though. I like most sports because they are action-filled. zona: What was one of the main reasons you wanted to go to International Charter School of Arizona? Max: One of the main reasons that I chose to go to ISCAZ was that I wanted to learn a new language. The main language that I want to learn is Spanish, but I am also learn-ing French. zona: Do you speak any other languages? Max: Currently I am learning two languages. I hope that by the end of this year I will be able to carry on a simple conversation in both Spanish and French. I would like to be able to speak other languages so that I can travel around the world and be able to talk to people who don’t speak English. zona: What are your top 5 songs on your IPOD? Max: I do not have a “top five songs” on my iPod, because I usually listen to Pandora or the radio on my iPod, and those have a wide variety of songs. Right now, I really enjoy listening to Dubstep which is a bassy-tech type of music. zona: What is your favorite video game and why? Max: I don’t really play video games that often, but if I had to choose a favorite, it would be NBA 2k12, because it is about basketball and I can play it with my friends. I also like Call of Duty. zona: What do you want to be when you grow up? Max: I am not sure what I want to be when I grow up, but I know that I want to do something I enjoy. If I enjoy what I do, it won’t be work. I like to cook for my family, but I don’t think I want to do that as my career. zona: Do you have a favorite subject in school? Max: My favorite subject in school has to be math because I am good at it, and it is an extremely important tool for life. Math skills are used whenever buying things, in business, and in just about everything. zona: What’s the best part about playing basketball? Max: My favorite part about play-ing basketball is the excitement and action that goes on during the game. It’s face-paced and requires a lot of stamina and endurance. So, another reason I enjoy playing basketball is that I like to work out and stay fit. zona: What is the boys’ team charity™? Max: The boys’ team charity™ is an all boys philanthropy group. We do our phiantropy at non-profit organizations like St. Mary’s Foodbank, Back-To-Clothing-Drive, or St. Vincent De Paul. At group meetings, we have inspirational speakers who come and speak to us. Last Spring, Anthony Robles spoke to

us. He was an ASU wrestling champion who only has one leg. This month we are having Jason Schechterle speak. zona: What do you love about being a Boy Scout? Max: I like being a Boy Scout because I really enjoy camping and learning new things about na-ture and everyday life. Also, while a Boy Scout, you get opportunities to do cool things like hike 50 miles or go to summer camps on islands an hour away from the main land. One of my big goals in Scouts is to get my Eagle. zona: If you could give a shout out to anyone who would it be and why? Max: If I could give a shout out to anyone, it would be to my Mom, because she helps me with any issues that I have, takes me places, and my favorite: makes DELICIOUS FOOD! Thanks Mom!

ZONA: What is asthma? AMERICAN LUNG ASSO-CIATION: Asthma is known to be a complex condi-tion with a spectrum of causes and contributing fac-tors, with airway inflammation as its central attribute. Asthma is a chronic airway disease, characterized by recurrent symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. The severity of asthma varies from person to person. ZONA: What causes asthma? ALA: The truth is, there is not a conclusive answer to what causes asthma. It often runs in families, but this does not explain how one sibling can experience asthma,

while another does not. There have been some environmental aspects related to people with asth-ma as well. This is especially true in adult onset asthma…which is often environmental. Overweight children have two times the risk of developing asthma, so obesity may be a factor. ZONA: What ef-fects can asthma have on health? ZONA: How many Americans are directly affected by asthma? ALA: An estimated 17.7 million Americans suffer from asthma; more than 5.6 million are children under age 18. Asthma ranks eighth in prevalence among chronic conditions in our nation and is a leading cause of serious illness among children. Asthma brings more than 1.9 million Americans to emergency rooms each year. Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism attributed to chronic conditions. (Lung Disease Data, The American Lung Association, 2003) ZONA: What do you do for kids with asthma in schools? ALA: We have a few in school programs that support children with asthma. Asthma 101 Presentations can be offered to those who are responsible for the children with asthma in the school setting (parent groups, teachers, school nurses, health aides, coaches, etc). Another program is Open Airways (OAS) for schools is an asthma management program for children grades 3-5. It consists of six 40 minute group lessons for children with asthma held dur-ing the school day or after school. OAS uses group discussion, stories, games and role play to help students take part in the program. The program works by teaching children that it is okay to have asthma and that they can take control of their asthma. Some of the topics covered in OAS include basic information about asthma, recognizing and managing asthma symptoms, using medication, avoiding asthma triggers, getting enough exercise, and doing well at school.

ZONA: What are symptoms of asthma? ALA: Symptoms can vary for individuals with asthma. Children and adults can exhibit one or all of the following: coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and others depending on the person. ZONA: What treatments are there for asthma? ALA: The primary treatment for asthma is a step approach using different classifications of medications and asthma education (to teach about asthma warning signs and avoidance of trig-gers.) ZONA: How can the community benefit from your the American Lung Association? ALA: The work we do at the ALA benefits our community as a whole. We help people quit smoking, assist adults and children with lung disease (asthma, COPD, etc.), support clean air initiatives (such as tough air pollution standards, alternative fuel and commuting options), influence public policies to make our public spaces, workplaces and homes free of second hand smoke, and MUCH more!

Fighting for AIRBy Doug Kelton, Editor of In the ZONA Magazine

Wheezing... shortness of breath... chest tightness... coughing, all symptoms of asthma... have you ever witnessed a child go through an asthma attack? I did recently in the courtyard of the Tempe Market Place, right infront of the movie theater, and I felt so helpless. The little boy finally settled down and was okay, unfortunately though, it’s commonplace here in Phoenix. So, I wanted to learn more about this chronic (long-term) lung disease, and I figured, why not go straight to the experts, so I spoke to a representative at the American Lung Association to further educate myself on this all too familiar disease:

An estimated 17.7 million Americans suffer from asthma; more than 5.6 million are

children under age 18.“ “

zona: How did you become involved with City of Hope? MEGan: The Xavier Spiritline Cheer coaches Monica Gaspar, Heather Carder, and Stephanie Walsh, are all graduates of Xavier College Prep and also former Spiritline members. The coaches, together with the Xavier administration, strongly encourage each team to serve the community. Both the coaches and girls unanimously agreed to join the search for a treatment and a cure for breast cancer. We all felt so passionate about the cause – all having had personal experience with friends and mothers who have fought their own battle with breast cancer. City of Hope gives us a direct and meaningful way to make a difference in searching for treatments and a cure for breast cancer. zona: What types of fundraising events have you and the Xavier cheer squad held for City of Hope? MEGan: Xavier Spiritline supports the City of Hope organization by walking in the annual Walk for Hope fundraiser. Our team reaches out to private and public sponsors in the community to increase awareness and raise money for the cause. zona: How much money have you raised for City of Hope? MEGan: Xavier Spiritline raises thousands of dollars for City of Hope. This year, with the help of my family, I secured a contribution of $2,500 from BHHS Legacy Foundation. I’d like to personally thank BHHS Legacy CEO Gerald L. Wissink for his and the Board’s support for City of Hope.

zona: What makes you continue to work so hard for this charity? What does it mean to you to help City of Hope? MEGan: I have felt the pain of watching someone that I care about suffer with breast cancer. We can

accomplish more as a team than we can as a set of individuals. Xavier Spiritline competes as a team and has won as a team. As a Spiritline member, I’ve been part of State and National championship teams, and

I have seen first hand how much a team can accomplish when they work together. zona: If you could tell Zona readers one thing that they could do to help City ofHope, what would it be? MEGan: If

each reader could go to www.CityOfHope.org and make a donation, no matter what they can afford, then we can really make a difference in the lives of real people. zona: How long have you been

cheering for? MEGan: I started cheering for a team when I was in the 6th grade. ZONA: What do you love about your cheer squad? What makes

you the best team? MEGan: I love the bonding between the team members. When I started Xavier College Prep most of the students that I already knew were other cheerleaders. Being part of a team helped me feel like I was part of the Xavier community, even before I took my first class at Xavier. Our team is the best because we have many highly-talented cheerleaders and gymnasts from around the valley. Our coaches support us to be all that we can be through our intense practice schedules. When these pieces of our team are put together, it produces amazing results. ZONA: What are your goals for City of Hope for this year? What are your goals for your cheer squad for this year? MEGan: Our team hopes to surpass our goal of raising $5,000 this year for City of Hope. Our cheer goals include repeating as Arizona State Champions and then National Champions in California. We are also cheering on the Brophy College Prep Football team in hopes they will once again win the

state championship title for high school football.
