Blaise Schaefer8th Grader at Saint Theresa Catholic SchoolYou are involved with a lot of activities at school, tell us about them all. Well, currently at school I am a part of the school choir, which means I sing at every Wednesday Mass. I’m our Student Council Secretary, which comes with all sorts of responsibilities. I’m also a member of the National Junior Honors Society (NJHS), which means I tutor occasionally to other students at the school. I help out with a lot of the events at our school like the auction and fall festival, as well as get involved in the sports programs. I’m playing basketball right now for the school… don’t ask how that’s going (we’re 0-4)!

Which do you think is your favorite? My favorite would be torn from choir and Student Council. Both offer me really good opportunities to get involved in school and church life. I really have used choir to become incredibly involved in our school’s usage of our church (I know how to set up the whole church for a mass) but Student Council offers a lot of ways to get involved with the school as well. I just really like being able to help out in every way possible.

Tell us about your involvement in your school musical? I was in our school’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat last year, playing the role of one of Joseph’s brothers: Issachar. I had a solo for a depressing song with a heavy French accent. Thanks to our director, Terry Temple, the show was a huge success that even won an award in a youth theater organization. I plan on being a part of Mr. Temple’s next production in the spring, but we don’t know what it will be yet.

What do you love the most about STCS? I love the teachers and staff and STCS the most. Without them nothing would really be possible. They’re some of the nicest people I know. The community is also amazing and worth note here. The parents of my grade are so generous with their time and talent to put together things like our Christmas dance last Friday.

What do you think is the hardest part about juggling extra circulars and still being an honor student? Just giving up the time to do it. I like to have fun with all of the extra-curricular programs and still manage good grades. You have to give more time and effort. Staying after school until 4:30 for basketball doesn’t mean you’re going to have less homework when you get home. You just have to be willing to give up some of that free time you might be used to having.

What general advice do you give to students that you are tutoring? To always give it their best. You may hate what you’re doing, but not doing your best is only going to hurt you later.

Is there anything else that you want to add that our readers may not know about you? I think my friends are one of the greatest gifts I have, as well as my family and my beautiful ranch in Montana where I spend every summer and get to meet great new people. I never want to lose any of them. Z

What kind of trophies/awards have you won for gymnastics? I have gotten first place two times in the vault, second place on the floor two times.

Resources to help bolster education are plentiful

Pencils are being sharpened and notebooks stashed in backpacks as the second half of the school year gets under way in Arizona. It’s this time of year when

excitement among students starting a brand-new course load is at a fever pitch. But beyond excitement, students may find themselves filled with anxiety as they journey into new areas of study that are unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory. As a teacher, there’s nothing worse than knowing a student is too nervous to tell you he doesn’t understand a concept or needs extra help. Whether stymied by algebraic equations or crafting an essay, it’s important to consider the wide range of resources to tackle the most challenging topics – from math and science to English and social studies.

Among them: Teachers: Often what should be the first stop for struggling students becomes a last resort. Teachers spend a lifetime learning how to deliver complex lessons to a variety of learners. Methods that explain a concept to a visual learner don’t necessarily translate to someone who needs to see the theory in

action. If a student seeks greater clarification, the teacher may be able to explain the lesson using a different approach. Tutoring programs: Schools offer a variety of resources when it comes to tutoring programs. From individual to group sessions, most schools offer teaching and learning sessions before or after school, or during lunch. Students could also benefit from additional resources available to their schools. For instance, Grand Canyon University faculty members offer free math tutoring to their students through a volunteer Pi It Forward program. In addition, the university hosts a Learning Lounge for Alhambra High School that pairs outstanding GCU students with AHS students for free after-school tutoring and study sessions. Students have access to tutoring offices, a computer lounge, and a comfortable team-learning environment where students can receive assistance from their tutors, borrow iPads and complete assignments. Online resources: The prevalence of the Internet as an education delivery vehicle is undeniable, offering a variety of

videos and learning modules. Dr. Ted Coe, the assistant dean of GCU’s College of Education, suggests several useful sites that can explain everything from introductory math to advanced courses. If students are looking for the Google of mathematics, wolframalpha.com is a great resource. It allows users the chance to enter math problems in regular language and get precise, detailed answers. The website allows three free step-by-step solutions per day. Beyond that, it simply provides final solutions. For specific lessons, CK12.org may be a better option. With a vast library of resources and a handy search feature, students can track progress on individual skills through the Kahn Academy’s (khanacademy.org) knowledge map after creating a free account. For Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards, illustrativemathematics.org is a go-to resource. This site lays out challenging practice problems that will stretch a student’s reasoning and modeling skills. Bottom line: No problem is too big to explain, and help is available at every turn, for every type of learner.

Q. What is your favorite thing about camelback Desert School?a. I love the teachers because they are all so nice and caring. I love learning math, reading and science. They make learning fun with lots of projects.

The week of December 2nd the 3rd grade at Benchmark Elementary decided to hold a coin drive for the Philippines. The winner of the contest received

one extra recess! One penny counted as a point. All silver and bills were negative points. The 3rd grade set out water jugs and the whole school tried to out donate each other. Morgan Vasiliauskas (pictured at left) said, “Raising money will help the Philippines recover from the typhoon. We don’t like it when people are hurt or dying.” Braden Totman said, ”All of the buildings were crushed. We are counting the money to help them build back what they lost.” The 1st grade at Benchmark was awarded the free recess and all sorts of lessons were learned-sportsmanship, counting, and goodwill. Anthony Mustacchio thought it was important because the entire country was destroyed. “We are sending the money to the Philippines so they can rebuild their country.” Over $1000 was raised!

Tesseract’s third grade class has embraced a project-based learning

initiative by forming their own Class Newspaper. The students are inviting

guest speakers from the industry to learn more, they have auditioned for specific jobs and

are learning various writing styles with the ultimate goal of publishing their very own “Tiger Times”.

Their first assignment was an opinion piece on why they thought Tesseract School was great. Here is what the third grade students wrote:

“Tesseract is the coolest school in the world. In science you let your mind go crazy.”

“I think Mr. O is the best science teacher in the world! He makes learning fun, while teaching fun things.”

“Miss Terri is the best music teacher ever. Every grade does amazing plays.”

“Tesseract is the school of your dreams. In science you do creative things. We have awesome pets for science.

On Friday December 6th, the 5th grade students at Cherokee Elementary School enjoyed Colonial Days. This tradition at Cherokee has been celebrated for over 15 years and brings to life the lessons of early American History that the students have been learning since August. The students participated in centers where they learned to make butter, candles, soap, homemade paper, and corn husk dolls. The students also learned skills and crafts from colonial times including calligraphy, cross stitching, quilling, wax seals for personal letters.

Q. What is your favorite part of being a Girl Scout? a. My favorite thing is cookie selling, because there are different prizes that you can earn.

Q. What are some different ways that Girl Scouts help the community? a. Parts of cookie income from sales go to Desert Voices to help them. We are also going to build them a hearing garden.

ChICKEn AnD wILD RICE SoUP

InGREDIEnTS:• 2 tablespoons olive oil • 16 oz. chicken breast, diced• 1 small onion, diced • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced• 1 teaspoon fresh thyme • 1 16 oz. can crushed Tomatoes • 4 cups hot water • 2 cups carrots, diced• 1 cup celery, diced • 1 ½ cups wild rice• pepper • sea salt

DIRECTIonS:Place a soup pot over medium heat and add the olive oil. Add the chicken onion, garlic, pepper, and thyme. Cook and stir for about 5 minutes, until the chicken is lightly browned vegetables are softened. Pour in the water and tomatoes then bring the liquid to a boil. Add in the rice and remaining vegetables; season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook on medium-low until the rice and vegetables are tender about 30 minutes then enjoy.Yield: 6 servings

InGREDIEnTS:• 6 cups old fashioned oats

• 1 cup milled flax seed• 2 cups crispy brown rice cereal

• 2 cups slivered almonds (optional)

• 3/4 cup honey• 3/4 cup sunflower oil• 1/4 cup brown sugar• 1 tablespoon cinnamon• 1 cup dried cranberries

DIRECTIonS:1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. then Line two

baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. In a bowl combine oats, rice cereal, flax seed, brown

sugar, and slivered almonds, in a large bowl and set aside.

3. In a sauce pan bring to boil over medium heat honey,

cinnamon, and oil. Then pour over the dry ingredients,

and stir until the entire mixture is coated lightly. Spread the

mixture out evenly on the baking sheets in a thin a layer.

4. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, stirring

every 10 min. after 30 minutes shut heat off and let cool

in the oven. Once cooled completely mix in the dried

cranberries and serve.

Yield: 30, 4oz. servings

How long have you been a Junior Hoop Dancer?I’ve been hoop dancing since I was three years old. This is my second year competing in the junior category at the competition.

Do you ever get nervous before performing in front of a crowd?I don’t really get nervous because I dance a lot.

How did you learn this type of dancing?I learned to hoop dance from my uncle. I have new designs I always am excited to show him. I can’t wait to dance with him.

Have you won any awards/trophies?I am the world champion youth hoop dancer for The Heard Museum. I also won first place for the Wa:k Pow Wow Hoop Dance contest in San Xavier. I also won first place at the Salt River High School talent show. I have two trophies.

How many shows have you performed?I don’t know how many shows I’ve danced in because I dance maybe three times a week. Usually, I dance with my grandma, uncles and mom at TSR (Talking Stick Resort), schools or events where I live.

Which one has been your favorite so far? My favorite place I danced at was in New Mexico for the cultural center. The older people were real nice to me and gave me hugs. One lady gave me a scarf because she liked my dancing. Z

How long have you been attending Xtreme Gym?I have been at Xtreme Gymnastics for 15 years.

What is your favorite event? What is your least favorite?My favorite event is floor because I love the combination of dance and tumbling. My least favorite event would have to be beam because it is terrifying, and I crash a lot.

What are your college plans? How many different colleges do you have looking at you?I have a lot of different options for college, and it is my goal to receive an academic scholarship and study out-of-state. So far I have applied to nine colleges, and I will probably apply to five more. At this point, I have been accepted to the University of Alabama and Texas A&M.

When you are not in the gym, what are you doing?I don’t really have much of a life outside of gym and school, but I do enjoy spending time with my teammates, school friends, and family. I am also involved in a number of clubs at school, and I frequently volunteer through these organizations. Z


Q. I’m excited about college, but worried about the

cost. How do I get financial aid?

A. Earning your degree or certificate at Scottsdale Community College means

you are getting one of the best educational values in the nation. However, even though tuition at SCC remains more affordable than tuition at state or private institutions, many students still require some form of financial aid.

Financial Aid is meant to supplement your family’s ability to pay for college costs and eligibility will depend on your demonstrated financial need and other requirements. Most financial aid comes from the state and federal government and can consist of grants, loans, student employment, and scholarships to help meet a student’s cost of attendance.

There are many factors affecting eligibility for financial aid. As a result, students should apply for financial aid every year, even if they don’t think they will qualify. Financial aid is available for full time as well as part time students.

The first step for everyone is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is online at https://fafsa.ed.gov/. You’ll also want to be sure and submit any requested information to the SCC Financial Aid Office by

the priority deadline in order to have your application reviewed before the tuition due date. Financial aid applications received after the deadline will still be considered for aid, but students will not receive their award letter until after the start of the semester.

If you file after the priority date, you should be prepared to use your own funds to pay for tuition and fees prior to the tuition due date. You may opt to use the Payment Plan to hold your classes until your financial aid application can be processed.
