Lexi is a great kid because she is able to balance the rigorous demands of being a gymnast and training with a challenging course load in school.

Q. How long have you been at Xtreme Gym and what level are you? A. I have been at Xtreme since 2005 and I am a level 10 gymnast.

Q. What does a typical week in gymnastics look like for you? A. A typical week usually consists of five practices that average four and a half hours in length. During competition season which is January - April, I compete on average two weekends a month locally and in other states. I hope to qualify for JO Nationals in May.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Xtreme Gym? A. My favorite thing about Xtreme is how large and spaced out the gym is and that we have such great equipment. Xtreme is also one of the only gyms in Arizona with air conditioning. That is a huge plus! Also the staff gives me amazing support.

Q. What else do you like to do for fun? A. I love to bake and work out. I love to see my friends and family on my off time.

Q. Any plans for the future? A. My future plans include college level gymnastics on a scholarship and I would like to study biology and become an RN. Z

Jaydin Bowser, Lexi Von Hatten and Gabi Fulk won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, respectively, in the eighth grade category at the 2015 Kiwanis of Carefree Community

Science Fair, held March 2-5. First place winner, Gabi Fulk, also won the Rudy Becwar Best in Show Award for seventh and eighth grade projects.

“I wanted to explore a project that I had a personal connection with,” said Gabi Fulk. Gabi’s project, “How Low Can You Go”, tested forces on the knee with a mechanical knee model she built. Her

project was inspired by knee surgery she underwent in December. Lexi Von Hatten measured the amount of iron in iron-fortified cereals for her science project, “Iron in Cereal”. Jaydin, a volleyball player, explored the electrolytes in sports drinks vs. orange juice. “I want to do something in the FBI area,” said Jaydin, who enjoys learning History.

Jaydin, Lexi and Gabi are eighth graders at Freedom Academy.

Twenty-five Tesseract Middle School students will present their

comprehensive research project on April 15 from 6-9 p.m. during Tesseract Night at MIM (Musical Instrumental Museum).

The evening will feature seventh grade students presenting group projects focusing on world cultures in each of the MIM’s geographical galleries.

Since early February, the MIM has functioned as the classroom for these students as they tour the exhibits and work in collaborative groups to accomplish a complete business cycle: initial assignments, timeline expectations, task delegation, research, creative writing, copyediting, graphic design, text production, speech preparation, marketing infomercials, oral presentation and audience interaction.

Students will also design and build an original musical instrument. Each component of the project takes approximately two to three weeks to complete, with all elements being on display at the final Tesseract Night at MIM.

The evening also includes performances from Tesseract bands and choirs as well as food and refreshments.O finish this story @inthezona.com O finish this story @inthezona.com

Schuyler is a ninth grade Brightmont Academy student

with a tremendous appetite for anything related to technology. As his father, Jim, explained, Schuyler places a very high value on the time he has available to pursue his own interests.

“Schuyler’s brain goes a million miles an hour, and an extensive homework

load competes with his own interest in technology,” Jim said. “The Brightmont Academy approach has freed him up to contribute to his own electronics projects and software programming and to give public talks on topics ranging from 3D printing to electronics to software defined radio.”

Schuyler’s family struggled to find a school that could provide the resources Schuyler needed. They chose Brightmont Academy, which provides Schuyler with the capability to meet his academic goals while giving him the latitude to pursue his interests on the technical side.

Schuyler is a ninth grader at Brighmont Academy.

Lucy is a dynamic, dedicated student and loves being a freshman at James Madison Prep! She volunteers often for her former elementary school. Lucy hopes

to pursue a career in medicine.

Q. We heard you like to volunteer, tell us about that. A. I love to volunteer! Service is an important part of a well-rounded life and I love knowing that I am helping others.

Q. What are some things you like to do for fun? A. For fun I like to listen to music, sing, play softball, swim, take photographs, and ride my bike. I also LOVE spending time with my friends and family!

Q. What do you like about James Madison Prep? A. I enjoy a lot about James Madison Prep but one thing I love is the size and how close we are as a school. You know everyone so it feels like coming to see your second family every day. The small classes allow for a lot of one on one teaching and great relationships between the students and their teachers. You get the same high school experience as a school with a large student body without giving up the small school feeling. We have all kinds of sports, extra-curricular classes as well as a robust music/ arts program.

Lucy is a ninth grader at James Madison Preparatory School.

Lucy

Brigit knows just how to balance her musical performances and her school responsibilities. We think Brigit has a very promising future.

Q. You are an accomplished musician, playing in your school band, Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestra, and The Youth Symphony of the Southwest. How did your passion for music and music performance begin?A. My first instrument was the piano, but I would say that I truly fell in love with music when I played in an orchestra for the first time. That was in seventh grade when I joined the Metropolitan Youth Symphony.

Q. Why did you choose to play the bassoon?A. When I agreed to learn the bassoon I did not know

what it was. My band director thought I would be a good fit for the instrument. When I saw the enormous and quirky instrument that was as tall as me, I fell in love.

Q. In addition to your music studies, you find time to serve as Horizon Honors High School’s Student Body President. What is that like?A. It is an honor to serve and it is always an interesting job. You never really know what will be thrown at you next. It is no easy task to get twenty teenagers to agree, but I enjoy everything the job entails.

Brigit is a senior at Horizon Honors High School.

Ten Xavier College Preparatory

students traveled to Aachen, Germany last month as part of the school’s International Studies Program. While abroad, the students attended classes, immersed themselves in the culture, and enjoyed Germany with the families of the Aachen students who traveled to Xavier in the fall.

Madeline Hill, Xavier senior, said, “The trip was nothing like anything I have ever experienced! I have traveled to Europe before, but Aachen was unreal! The cobblestone streets made me want to walk the city for hours! I loved being in this part of the world during Karneval - it’s like a German version of Mardi Gras. I learned how to travel independently in a foreign country and lived with another family for the duration of my trip. I miss the friends I made and the streets I loved to explore!!”

Q. You had a lead part in the school Christmas program.

What was that like?A. It was very exciting and I was kind of scared.

Q. What do you like about performing and singing?A. I love performing, singing and acting because it’s like my thing. You get to be on stage and it’s really fun.

Alexandra plays the violin, basketball and loves her school. Read more about Alexandra and what she wants to be when

she grows up.

Q. How long have you been playing the violin? What made you choose the violin?A. I have been playing the violin for about a year and a half. I have wanted to play violin since I was six, but my mom didn’t think I was ready to commit myself to learn. I also wanted to learn to

play so I could duet with my friend Hannah, who plays the cello. After many years of taking piano, my parents finally gave in and let me start learning to play the violin. I love it!

Q. You also play basketball for St. John Vianney, tell us about that.A. I started playing basketball when I was in first grade in my neighborhood league. At St. John Vianney, sports teams start in middle school, so I started playing with my friends at school in sixth grade. Basketball is very popular so this year we have a team with just eighth graders. Our season just started and we are 2-0!

Alexandra is an eighth grader at St. John Vianney.

Adama shared the story of her family being Gambian refugees. She attributes the afterschool program at the Woodrow C. Scoutten/ Tolleson Branch for encouraging her to find her “voice.”

“My mom has always said, through all the struggles there is always a breakthrough,” says Adama. “The Boys & Girls Club was our breakthrough. I found my confidence, identity and sense of belonging because of the club. The staff members and my friends became my second family, the club became my second home. ”

cactus Day Camp is where traditional day camping comes to the desert. The Cactus experience is about trying new things and gaining new skills in

an emotionally and physically safe and non-competitive environment while gaining independence as well as a sense of belonging.

Q. Your camp is ACA Accredited, what does that mean?A. The ACA has 50 years of experience in developing and administering a standards program. It has set the standards in the industry. Accreditation assures families that Cactus Day Camp has made a commitment to a safe, nurturing environment for its campers.

Q. What does a typical day at Cactus Day Camp look like?A. No two days are ever the same at Cactus Day Camp. Each day starts and ends with a pep rally where we gather as an entire camp and celebrate birthdays, win prizes, dance, sing and show our spirit. Campers swim every day in one of our two pools on campus staffed with certified lifeguards. Besides swimming each day, camp groups are scheduled for three of our over 20 activities which include archery, gaga, board games, gaming, team sports, gymnastics, crafts, dance, model rocketry, mini golf, climbing, water slide and more. In addition to the

regular scheduled group activities, campers have a chance to choose their favorite activities during Camper’s Choice, a favorite amongst the campers.

Q. What other activities can kids expect while attending?A. Each Friday, we culminate the fun with an exciting theme and special schedule. Special days such as Carnival, Olympics, Color Day, and Wacky Water Days are highlights for campers and a time when spirit and enthusiasm are at an all-time high!

Q. Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?A. Besides our daily activities, we pride ourselves on the strong relationships our campers make with each other and their counselors as well as the camaraderie and enthusiastic spirit we live at camp. We contribute that to campers attending on a consistent basis for a minimum of two weeks while having the same counselors and campers in their groups. Z
