Drumming Qualifications
BackgroundFor many people the first thingthat comesto mind when they think aboutScotland isBagpipes andPipe Bands. SQA'sNationalProgressionAwards(NPAs)in Scottish Bagpipes and Scottish Pipe Band Drumming;andProfessionalDevelopment Awards(PDAs)in Scottish Bagpipescover the skillsand knowledgeneededto performon Scottish BagpipesoronScottish PipeBand Drums.
These awards weredeveloped by SQA in partnership with the Piping andDrummingQualificationsBoard (PDQB). Theyare based on NationalStandardsofdesign, teaching, assessment and certification. Theyenable a consistentandstructuredapproach to the study of Scottish Bagpipes and/or Scottish Pipe BandDrummingin Scotland and internationally, andtheywill help maintain Scotland'scentral positionof setting and maintaininghighstandards in this form of traditionalmusic.
Entry to the NPA and PDA qualifications is at the discretion of the approved SQACentre. Beginner Pipers would normally enter atNPA (SCQF Level 2)and progressthrough each level to SCQF Level 6. For Pipers there isalsothe opportunity to advancefurthertoPDAsinScottishBagpipes(SCQFLevels7and8). Beginner Pipe BandDrummers would normally enter at NPA (SCQFLevel 3) and progressthrough eachlevel to SCQF Level 6.
NPAstructureThere are five levels in Piping and four levels in Pipe Band Drumming.All levels incorporate both Solo Performance and Theory.
