INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the 2015 Scottish Open Boccia Championships at the Peak Sports Village, Stirling. 2014 saw a transitional year for the National Boccia Events in Scotland with a restructuring of the Championship and Open events to allow our Boccia players in Scotland an opportunity for increased match-time at these events. It is gratifying to see a large entry again in these Championships which validates the restructuring process. Boccia is clearly a sport which a wide demographic people enjoy playing and competing in and SDS feel it is important to ensure the competition pathway in this sport remains accessible for all players. A huge thanks must go out to the many volunteers and staff from across the country that have helped with the event in terms of laying courts, officiating and supporting players to attend. The standard of play across Scotland has gone from strength to strength and has certainly benefited from the increased number of players taking part at local level. A large amount of work has gone into ensuring competitive opportunities exist for all players around Scotland with many branches introducing area championships and qualifiers and this has proved to increase the standard of competition around the country. With three of the four classifications already qualified for Rio (the BC3 team are about to embark on a trip to Columbia to pursue qualification). Scottish players make up 42% of the GB squad and we hope for strong representation again in Rio. Scottish Disability Sport were saddened to hear about the passing of Andrew Slack in August. Andrew was a unique character in Boccia with a glint in his eye and a wonderful sense of humour. He excelled at these Championships over the years and was National Champion on more than one occasion. These Championships will be held in Andrew’s memory. On behalf of Scottish Disability Sport, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all players, clubs and teams every success in the competition.

Competition format Where a round robin format is played a player will be allocated 2 points for a victory. If two or more players finish the group session on the same number of points then point difference across matches will be taken into account. Class A: Class A will exist as two groups and players will play a round robin competition. The top 2 will

contest a final whilst the second-placed finishers will contest the Bronze medal match. Class B: Class B will be split into two sections (one male section and one female section) and players will

play a round robin competition in 4 groups. Following the round robin the top player in each group will contest the semi-finals. The winners of each semi final will play a final with the runners up playing for the bronze medal.

Class D: Class C will be a round robin draw with 4 groups. Group winners will contest semi-finals followed

by a final.

Appeals Any appeals should be made by team managers or coaches in writing and will be considered by an appeals panel of three people. Time Limits Due to the volume of games the matches in Class A will be subject to a 35 minute time limit and all other classes will be subject to a 15 minute time limit for each match which will include a warm-up for all entrants’ first matches. If the time limit is reached the end will be completed and the score at that point will be taken. Registration Registration will be available from 8:15am on Saturday morning with players expected to be on court ready to play at 9am. Practice Courts Unfortunately due to the volume of matches there will be no practice courts available throughout the day. Forfeited Matches If a player does not compete in a scheduled match their opponent will be awarded a 6 – 0 victory. Lunch & Breaks There will be no allocated lunch breaks so players and officials should take the opportunity for breaks during non-match periods for them. Announcer Richard Mann will be undertaking announcing duties for this competition.
