// WELCOME:JONATHAN MORTON’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON
My fi rst concert with Scottish Ensemble was at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall in 1998, an invitation which had come about because I played in a string quartet with past SE member Alasdair Tait. Of course I had absolutely no idea this was the beginning of a long association with SE. I was in awe of the group’s playing and was thrilled to be asked back on a regular basis. In 2005/06 I became the group’s Leader and Artistic Director; it was a huge honour to be chosen for the role. I now look back at my fi rst season with a mixture of fondness and surprise - of course the group and I have moved on over the years, but it’s good to see that some of the key SE qualities were present from the start: distinctive programming, close relationships with guest artists, and working with young talent. Looking at the 2014/15 season, our individual projects have become more responsive to the needs of our audiences. Our city residencies allow us to engage meaningfully with local communities in exciting and occasionally unconventional ways!
In September our unique collaboration with renowned visual artist Toby Paterson explores new connections across art forms, in a surprising venue in our home town of Glasgow. This one-off event is in a secret location (clues will be released nearer the time) and is not to be missed. Our concerts with the immensely gifted pianist Alasdair Beatson and Classical Brit-winning saxophonist Amy Dickson feature some of the most exceptional solo performers from the younger generation. This theme is also present in Commonwealth Strings, a project created in conjunction with the Edinburgh International Festival and the Royal Over-Seas League. The 2014/15 season closes with SE Songbook, a unique celebration at Glasgow’s Fruitmarket where we will perform expertly crafted arrangements of classic songs from the 1920s-1960s. I hope you will be able to join me and raise a glass to my 10th season as SE Artistic Director.

Seavaigers with Chris Stout (fiddle) & Catriona McKay (Scottish harp) Bach Concerto for Two Violins, Strings & Continuo in D minor, BWV 1043
Sally Beamish Seavaigers
Various composers* Scottish Variations (SE new commission)
Stout/McKay Sunstone
* David Horne, Stuart MacRae, Anna Meredith, Alasdair Nicolson, Alasdair Spratt and Martin Suckling.
Rugged landscapes and turbulent seascapes – in a series of new works and folk-infused re-imaginings, SE finds fresh perspectives on Scottish music. Chris Stout and Catriona McKay take the lead in Beamish’s double concerto Seavaigers, which depicts a dramatic sea journey from Dundee to Shetland.
In a new piece specially commissioned by Scottish Ensemble, some of Scotland’s finest composers come together to offer their take on a traditional Scottish tune – expect some unusual and surprising results from Scottish Variations.
Also in the programme, Bach’s well-loved Baroque masterpiece for two violins gets a subtly Scottish overhaul when Chris Stout and Catriona McKay join Jonathan Morton for this performance.

Summer Chamber Music: The Italian Connection
Crear Wednesday 23 July, 7.30pm
St Mary’s Priory Church, Ryedale Festival, Old Malton, Friday 25 July, 8pm
Paxton House, Music at Paxton Sunday 27 July, 6pm
Strauss* Sextet from ‘Capriccio’, Op. 85
Boccherini Sextet in F minor, Op. 23 No. 4
Puccini Crisantemi
Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70
Scottish Ensemble musicians perform a series of chamber music concerts with an Italian connection. From Argyll to Yorkshire in locations of dramatic natural beauty, it’s SE’s summer musical road trip. The rich programme of music, brimming with infectious melodies, showcases SE musicians as chamber performers.
Boccherini’s miraculously inventive sextet highlights his often overlooked but highly developed musical language. The genius of Puccinian melody is clear in his short work for string quartet - Crisantemi - with its main themes deemed worthy of inclusion in the final act of his opera Manon Lescaut. The programme closes with Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence; inspired by a trip to Italy, the Florentine sunshine sparkles throughout this engaging work for string sextet.

Tippett Concerto for Double String Orchestra
Celebrating the Commonwealth Games in 2014, 14 musicians from Scottish Ensemble are joined by 14 of the most talented pre-professional young string players from across the Commonwealth to create a double string orchestra.
Working in partnership with the Royal Over-Seas League, SE has brought together this exceptional group of young musicians to perform a rich and varied programme of music from the Commonwealth side-by-side with SE’s own musicians.
Alongside well-loved British classics – from Vaughan Williams’ spiritual Tallis Fantasia to the grand sweep of Elgar’s noble Introduction and Allegro – there’s a brand new work by leading New Zealand composer Gareth Farr, and Peter Sculthorpe’s evocative portrait of Australia’s Kakadu National Park. The concert ends with the infectious, jazzy rhythms of Tippett’s Double Concerto.

Scottish Ensemble marks Jonathan Morton’s tenth season as Artistic Director with an ambitious cultural event created in collaboration with visual artist Toby Paterson. This immersive experience combines specially curated sets of 20th-century music for strings with the present and sometimes polarising environment of Glasgow’s 20th-century architecture. Intended to surprise and seduce, as well as to challenge pre-conceptions about both the music and the architecture, this event invites audiences to listen again to a rich collection of contrasting string music which will be performed in a newly created environment built by Toby Paterson specifically for this project. Held in an unconventional Glasgow location this event runs for two consecutive nights with full details released over the summer.
Tickets £15Book with the CCA box office cca-glasgow.com / 0141 352 4900
Please note: further details of the event will be released over the summer and to contact you we need a current e-mail address. Please share this with the box office when booking. If you are purchasing a Glasgow season ticket this event is available as part of this package, which is only bookable with Glasgow Concert Halls box office.
If you require wheelchair access to the venue or have another access request please contact the Scottish Ensemble office before booking.

Glittering energy meets Romantic opulence as Vivaldi’s sparkling concertos share the stage with Dvořák’s glowing music for strings. Soloists step out from Scottish Ensemble to perform three of the great Venetian Baroque composer’s virtuosic concertos – from the scintillating Concerto for Four Violins to the darkly dramatic Concerto for Two Cellos.
Following Dvořák’s charming Waltz and lyrical Nocturne, the concert ends with the humorous high spirits and singing melodies of his sunny Serenade for Strings.

SE Sessions at the CCA, GlasgowMonday 8 December 2014 8.30-9.30pm Monday 23 February 2015 8.30-9.30pm Free event
SE Sessions is a new performance format which was imagined during the second year of Scottish Ensemble City Residencies. Following its success with audiences in Inverness, Dundee, Aberdeen, and Perth, SE brings it to the central belt for the first time with two dates at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow.
SE Sessions showcases the individual players of SE in a relaxed, informal setting. In solo performances or in small groups, players share some of their favourite short works for their instrument, not necessarily in a classical style. It’s definitely not your standard classical concert!
Audiences can enjoy SE music-making in the CCA’s Saramago Café Bar, which offers a satisfying selection of Mediterranean-inspired ‘animal-free’ dishes including four plates for just £10. The free performance will last for one hour with a short break, and we advise early arrival to ensure space at a table.
// SE SESSIONS
Never afraid to try something different, Jonathan Morton is marking the end of his 10th anniversary season with a unique celebration at Glasgow's Fruitmarket. SE Songbook will transport audiences to the music halls and ballrooms of yesteryear with expertly crafted arrangements of classic dance numbers from the 1920s-1960s.
Cabaret-style candlelit tables will create intimate surroundings for the performance of a diverse selection of music by iconic songwriters such as Irving Berlin, Henry Mancini and George Gershwin, with a singer joining SE for part of the evening. The evening will continue with a post-event party till late.
We'll welcome you to the evening with a drink on arrival and sweet canapés. Guaranteed to raise your spirits and take you on an uplifting musical journey, join us to celebrate Jonathan's 10 years as Artistic Director and the end of the 2014/15 season.

Mozart Piano Concerto No.12 in A major, K414
Elegant refinement from Mozart and Haydn forms the graceful focus for Scottish Ensemble’s collaboration with acclaimed Perth-born pianist Alasdair Beatson.
He’s the soloist in Mozart’s brilliant, high-spirited Piano Concerto No.12, and he joins Scottish Ensemble Artistic Director, violinist Jonathan Morton, in Haydn’s witty Double Concerto in F. In between, two more recent composers provide commentaries on those two great Classical masters: Arvo Pärt in his mesmeric and profoundly moving Mozart-Adagio, and Alfred Schnittke in his theatrical and mischievously funny Moz-Art à la Haydn.

Celebrate the coming of Christmas with Scottish Ensemble’s atmospheric candlelit concert —and with one of the most fondly cherished pieces of music ever written.
The endless sublime melodies of Mozart’s joyful Eine kleine Nachtmusik ensure its enduring popularity, and it’s matched in exquisite tunefulness by Borodin’s Sinfonia for Strings. Written as a love letter to his wife, the work’s third movement takes the form of a Nocturne and is one of his best-loved and instantly recognisable tunes. In between come new arrangements of two Chopin Nocturnes by David Matthews, and the red-hot rhythms of Steve Martland’s gripping Eternity’s Sunrise.

Amy Dickson, the young Classical Brit-winning, chart-topping saxophonist, joins Scottish Ensemble in two powerful pieces for classical sax: Glazunov’s warmly lyrical yet sparklingly virtuosic Saxophone Concerto, and the profound spirituality of Georgian composer Giya Kancheli’s captivating Night Prayers.
There’s a journey from darkness to light: Shostakovich’s deeply personal Chamber Symphony is his dramatic response to the Second World War, while Tchaikovsky’s radiant Serenade for Strings brims over with expressive melody.

Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48
Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky: two musical giants who painted their turbulent inner lives onto musical canvasses with irrepressible power.
Tchaikovsky’s dramatic themes, intense rhythms, and soaring, dance-like melodies make an immediate connection with audiences today, just as they did in the 19th century. His Andante Cantabile and the Serenade for Strings are powerful, moving works that come straight from the heart.
Written during a visit to war-torn Dresden, Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony is a gripping portrayal of the brutality of conflict. Its jagged, dynamic rhythms in the central sections are contrasted by elegiac outer movements that never fail to move the listener. // Liza Johnson
