Crime Scott and Bailey

Suzie Josh Hasan and Maisey

Two shot is used to establish who is in the scene.Mise en scene shows that they are from middle class which can be seen through the décor such as the tiles , kitchen utensils and wine.Minimal lighting is used to capture the natural feel showing the calm home and average lifestyle both characters leads. Both him and her are well dressed and have a kempt appearance showing cleanliness which is typical of a middle class couple.

It is a Modern contempary family home to show they have a reasonable amount of money.Diegetic sound is used in this scene to show the social realism as she turns the pages of the document.

This is a establishing shot, making the audience aware of the setting of the next scene as well as the change in class. The two tower blocks have connotations of the working class and crime. The sky is grey representing the working classes dismal and with dull lives.

The sound is diegetic, as we can hear a strong wind in the background. The sound of the wind makes the scene seem intense and bleak. The tower blocks and houses are surrounded by bare trees and dismal looking nature, perhaps indicating the lower classes live in more of a primitive condition opposed to the sophisticated urban surroundings of the middle class.

Wide angle shot- used to show the area in which the two detectives are placed. The housing and buildings gives the audience a stereotypical approach as the connotations are that it is a council estate where people from a lower class and working class live. This is shown later on in the clip through the contrast of clothing each character wears when interviewing the suspect.

Diegetic sound is used in this clip to show the social realism as the cars casually drive pass as they would in a real life situation.

As we see our new female character entering the scene the mise-en-scene around her appears dirty, with graffiti on the walls – this would be typical of a working-class area, and would suggest elements of a council estate. As we are positioned from inside the car we picture ourselves in the shoes of the detectives, who are clearly of a higher class than this lady, the use of the bars surrounding the lady as she is walking may be a hidden message to us as an audience that there is a class barrier between us and her.

The mise en scene is used to show the contrast between the social class of the characters involved by the costumes and the props that are used. The character in the middle of this camera shot is wearing hoodie, which is often associated with criminals and the lower class society. This character also appears to have a tattoo on her chest and smoking a cigarette which are both stereotypical attributes of a lower class individual. This is a huge contrast to the two detectives who are wearing long sophisticated jackets which signifies to the audience that these characters may be from a higher class.

One of the camera shots used in this scene was a low angle wide shot looking up the characters. This makes the detectives look a lot taller than the suspect, which suggests that they are more significant and have more power. Due to the camera shot the detectives seem to be looking down at the suspect who is of a lower class. This could be a representation of modern society, where the higher social classes are always looking down on the lower classes.

Shot Reaction Shot is used in this scene. It shows the large differences between the two classes. The shot on the left (Mid Shot) is of a lower-class lady, she is slouched, has tattoos and is very overweight. The clothes she is wearing are plain and she is not wearing any makeup. She is representing the lower-class to have little care for their appearances. She is looking down perhaps showing she has some guilt for what she has done and is lying the police. The shot on the right is very different. The two ladies are dressed very smartly , and look much cleaner than the lower class woman. They are sat upright and have their chins facing up, perhaps indicating some snobbery at the lower-class lady.

The mise-en-scene is interesting for the set is quite bare in this scene. The light in the background could show an investigation into the class systems in this scene. The sound is completely diegetic, making the scene tense and makes the audience focus completely on the dialogue.
