Last season Coach Piehler achieved a milestone with the 500th victory of his career, which brings his overall record as a varsity head coach to 504-265. In his 13 years as head coach of the Scots, Piehler’s teams have won 8 district championships. His teams have qualified for the state playoffs 12 times, playing in the Regional Finals (2008), Regional Semifinals (2007, 2017, 2019), Regional Quarterfinals (2009), Area Finals (2012, 2016, 2018) and Bi-District Finals (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014). The Scots have qualified for the Regional Tournament in two of the last three seasons. At Highland Park, Piehler has been named District Coach of the Year eight times. In 2008 he was a finalist for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) Don Coleman State Coach of the Year Award. Prior to coaching the Scots, Piehler served as head coach at Plano West Senior High School from 1999-2006 and Rockwall High School from 1994-1999. He began his coaching career at Clark High School in Plano from 1991-1994. A native Kansan, Piehler graduated from Newton High School in 1979. He led his basketball team to the 1979 state championship and also won the 1979 state doubles tennis championship. In 1994, Piehler was elected to the Newton High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Piehler attended SMU where he played basketball for the Mustangs. He finished his career as the fourth all-time leading scorer in SMU history. In the fall of 1983, Piehler played in five exhibition games for the Dallas Mavericks before being the last player cut prior to the start of the regular season. Piehler was a student-teacher at McCulloch Middle School in the spring of 1987 under the guidance of HP leg-endary Coach Kellis White. During this time he met his future wife Mindy on a blind date. Coach Piehler and Mindy celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary last summer. They are the proud parents of four children: Matthew (27), Megan (24), Michael (23) and Mitchell (19). In addition to his coaching duties, Piehler also teach-es Partner’s PE at Highland Park High School. In 2013, Coach Piehler was the first recipient of the Highland Park Special Education Parents Advisory Committee (SEPAC) Spotlight Award, given annually to a community member who goes above and beyond to support the special education population in HPISD.
