Produced by the Development Office Scotch College MelbourneGreat effort has been made to ensure an accurate and thorough 2016 Scotch College Foundation Annual Report. We apologise if any omissions or errors have occurred. If you discover an omission or error, please notify the Development Office, and we will ensure that omission or error is rectified in the 2016 Annual Report.

Because we believe that multiple affiliations are an indication of the deep trust and strong conviction in this institution, we have chosen to list more than once those donors to the Annual Giving Program who have multiple connections to the school. Thus, an Old Boy donor could be listed as a contributor to the school in his class year and also be listed as a current parent donor. If we are unaware of an affiliation you have with the school, please let us know so that we can maintain complete and up-to-date records.

President’s ReportMichael Robinson AO (’55)

MR MICHAEL ROBINSON AO (’55) PRESIDENT OF THE SCOTCH COLLEGE FOUNDATION

We will remember 2016 for many reasons. Obviously the year will be noted for the official opening of the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science – an event witnessed by approximately 2000 members of the Scotch Family on the School’s 165th birthday – but it will also be remembered for the Foundation’s first major attempts at providing funding for the School’s Indigenous Scholarship Program.

An appeal to raise $5M to fund the Indigenous Scholarship Program in perpetuity was launched at the President’s Dinner. To date, $1.4M has been committed to this worthwhile project, securing the program’s funding shortfall for 2016-20 ($1M) and, importantly, representing the seed funding for the perpetual fund.

We will also remember 2016 as the year when five indigenous students graduated from Scotch with their VCE, thanks to the School, the government, the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation, and many of you.

The official opening of the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science was the culmination of many years of work by many people, who worked with the Principal and key School staff to bring this important vision to reality.

This was the most ambitious project undertaken by the School since its move to Hawthorn some 100 years ago, and by any measure it must be recognised as a great triumph, and one of which our founder and forefathers would be justifiably proud.

The success of the capital campaign, with more than 1200 donors, has demonstrated clearly that the culture of giving is alive and well at Scotch. The names of those who supported the capital campaign at Foundation membership level are listed on a donor board, prominently placed at the entrance to the Centre for Science, and major donors have been recognised with naming rights opportunities throughout the building.

I again take this opportunity to thank those from within our community who so generously invested in this vision. I hope you feel we have invested your money well.

The assets of the Foundation (which are entirely separate from funds raised for buildings) increased during the year from $45.6M to $49.6M, largely as a result of positive market movements. The Foundation’s investment income of dividends and interest from these assets remained steady at $2.8M.

In 2016, there were 57 boys at Scotch on scholarships funded by the Foundation, in addition to the scholarships provided by the School and those funded by externally managed trusts. We aim to increase the number of scholarships funded by the Foundation, and several large recent bequests for scholarship purposes will assist us in achieving that ambition. The Foundation also distributed other money to the School from its recurrent income, including nearly $300,000 for general purposes.

I wish to thank the members of the Foundation Board who have again served both the Foundation and the School with great enthusiasm and distinction in 2016. I particularly thank Vice President, David Yu, for his judicious work in the preparation of the Foundation accounts, which can be found later in this report, and Doug Lording (’64), who stood in for me for a portion of the year.

Finally, and importantly, I record my great appreciation to the staff in the Development Office led by Tim Shearer and supported superbly by David Ashton, Sandra Dick, Adam Henwood, Bec Marshall, Rebecca Mortimer, Patty Wallace-Smith and Hugh Wilson. I also thank Scott Montgomery and Deb Burley from the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association for the role they play.

The Foundation will again look to support the School’s goals and ambitions in 2017, and I look forward to your continued interest and support.

“It’s a great collaborative learning space for students and teachers.”

Executive Director’s ReportTim Shearer (’85)

MR TIM SHEARER (’85) DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

I would like to add my thanks to all who have made so much possible at Scotch. Each boy’s journey is all the richer for the difference that the generosity of the Scotch Family has made both in the past and in recent times: be it outstanding teaching supported through the staff salary enhancement fund; be it through excellent teaching and learning facilities essentially provided by the generosity of our community; or be it through the diversity created by the various scholarship funds that have been endowed through the generosity of many benefactors.

Thanks to you, we have had another remarkable year, highlighted by the official opening of the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science on 6 October 2016. More can be read about this significant event later in my report.

The Foundation’s fundraising attentions turned to supporting the Scotch College Indigenous Scholarship Fund in 2016, with the launch of a capital campaign to raise $5M to support the program in perpetuity, launched at the Foundation’s President’s Dinner in May. The Scotch College Foundation Australian Art Show was held in September, raising funds to support the Indigenous Scholarship Program and for the provision of the Quickstart numeracy and literacy program at Tiwi College.

At the conclusion of 2016, $1.3M had been committed to the Indigenous Scholarship Fund, securing the program’s funding from 2016-2020

and seeding the perpetual fund. We will look to build this fund over the next four years. It is also worth noting that a Scotch Family member generously sponsors the week-long trip to Melbourne in August for students and staff of Tiwi College, which is a real highlight of their school year.

Fundraising for the Building Fund continued in 2016, as the focus moved from Science to the closely related disciplines of Design and Technology. A total of $10.3M has been committed to this project and to the restoration of the original Senior School gym, which presently houses Design and Technology, into a new dining hall/cafeteria for boys and staff. These developments predicate some exciting future works in the precinct between the main quadrangle and the new Centre for Science.

The philanthropic commitment of the school community that has enabled the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science to come to fruition has also enabled many boys who otherwise would not have been able to attend Scotch to do so. The Foundation again provided scholarship opportunities for boys to attend Scotch. Presently 54 are at Scotch on Foundation sponsored (full or part) scholarships.

The Foundation Future (Endowment) Fund provided the school with a distribution of $299,100 in 2016 ($323,445 in 2015).

Pillar 3The Scotch College Indigenous Scholarship Fund

For the last 20 years, the Scotch College Indigenous Program has offered all Scotch boys the opportunity to experience and understand our country’s indigenous culture, as part of a contemporary Australian education.

The program has three components:

1. our commitment to offer indigenous boys full academic and boarding scholarships;

2. the Indigenous Partnership Program, which teaches Scotch boys about indigenous culture through projects with local communities; and

3. our longstanding partnership with Tiwi College, built on friendship and respect.

The school’s current Indigenous Scholarship Program is funded through a combination of support from the government (Abstudy) and the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation, leaving a shortfall of approximately $30,000 per student. This shortfall is funded annually by generous members of our community.

The Foundation’s vision is to create a perpetual fund which would see the indigenous scholarships funded in a similar manner to the general scholarships; through income generated by endowed funds. For this vision to become a reality, $5M is required, and we launched a capital campaign to achieve this aim at the 2016 Foundation President’s Dinner. At the end of 2016, $1.3M had been generously committed to the campaign.

One initiative worth noting is the creation of the Scotch College Staff Indigenous Scholarship. Thirty-six staff have generously committed monthly deductions from their salaries to half fund ($15,000 in 2016) an indigenous scholarship. We hope to double the number of participants in 2017, funding a full scholarship on an ongoing basis. These staff, who already give so much to Scotch, are sincerely

Pillar 2The Scotch College Foundation Scholarship Fund

In 2016, $366,762 was committed to the Scotch College Foundation Scholarship Fund.

The School Council and the Foundation have agreed that the full funding of scholarships and bursaries will be funded by the Scotch College Foundation Scholarship Fund in time.

Pillar 1The Scotch College Building Fund

The Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science is the first in a series of extensive works that will transform the school. These developments are premised on the ongoing conversations of learning which underpin our educational strategy. With the capital campaign for the Sir Zelman Cowen completed, fundraising attention moved to the creation of a new centre for Design and Technology.

Design and Technology, which is currently taught in three facilities, will be consolidated in a new centre at the south-west corner of the Glenn Centre, offering a home for the innovation and enterprise that will assist to fuel our future economic prosperity. Making use of a dormant site, this new building will help establish a coherent STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) precinct, linking the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science, the teaching of Mathematics, the Art department, and the facilities of the Grounds and the Maintenance Department.

The Design and Technology Cube will be a centre of innovation, where boys will discover new possibilities in the rapidly progressing fields of Design and Technology, and Engineering.

Learning will occur through collaboration and experimentation in both traditional skills and emerging processes. In state-of-the-art workshops and design studios, our boys will develop skills in design, testing and refinement that are essential to every field of enterprise.

By the conclusion of 2016, $10.3M had been committed to this and other associated building projects.

Pillar 4The Scotch College Foundation Future (Endowment) Fund

In 2016, donors committed $12,000 to the Foundation’s Future (or Endowment) Fund. At the end of 2016 this fund was valued at $10.4M ($9.7M in December 2015). The Endowment Fund exists to provide a reliable income stream for the school, and in 2016, $299,100 was provided from this fund to the school ($323,445 in 2015).

With the support of the Scotch Family, we are seeking to establish a perpetual Indigenous Scholarship Fund, ensuring that this successful and inspiring program continues to enrich our school’s culture, and creates a lasting impact.

Regular Giving

The 2016 Annual Giving program raised $75,653 – down 40 per cent on 2015’s result. This decrease is perhaps best explained by the large number of five-year pledges secured during the capital campaigns for the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science, the Design and Technology Cube and the Indigenous Scholarship Fund. The Annual Giving program, which commenced at Scotch in 1977, continues to provide a vehicle for everyone to contribute to the welfare of the school.

Life Support for Scotch

Twenty-six Old Boys are participating in this program which raised $4,773 in 2015 ($4,811 in 2015). This program was introduced in 2013 to encourage younger Old Boys to begin their philanthropic journey with their school. This program involves Old Boys donating the amount corresponding to their years out from school in a dollar value, on a monthly direct debit basis.

Gifts and Major Gifts Program

Forty-eight members of the Scotch Family joined the Scotch Foundation in 2016 by making a commitment at the $10,000 level or above. Four members upgraded their membership category during the year. The majority of new members are supporting the fundraising for the Design and Technology Cube and the Indigenous Scholarship Fund, and I sincerely thank all of them for their generous support.

Bequest Program

A gift in your will helps us to have a positive long-term impact on our local, regional, national and international communities. With your support Scotch continues to provide a well-rounded education that nurtures boys to make their own contribution to society. A bequest to Scotch is arguably the greatest gift one can make. It has the power to transform individual lives and through that, to transform whole communities.

Through the continuing generosity of the Scotch Family, Scotch boys are able to take full advantage of second-to-none teaching and learning facilities, including the superb Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science. The buildings and facilities at Scotch are in large part the result of the efforts and generosity of parents and Old Boys of the school. Those who elect to include Scotch in their estate planning are recognised with membership of the Alexander Morrison Circle (AMC).

The AMC was established in 2003 to recognise the generosity of people who have indicated their intention to remember Scotch College in a bequest, as part of their charitable intention. Membership of the Alexander Morrison Circle is presented to anyone who indicates such a bequest, regardless of the level of financial commitment. At the end of 2016 the AMC had a membership of 318, 193 of whom are deceased.

New bequest income for 2016 was $2,011,411. (Bequest income in 2015 was $10,957,015.) During 2016, we welcomed 12 new members (12 in 2015) to the AMC. Sadly, 6 members of the AMC died in 2016 (11 in 2015).

A full listing of AMC members appears on page 36 of this annual report.

The following bequests were realised in 2016, both from members of the Alexander Morrison Circle.

Brian Cossar (’55)

Brian attended Scotch from 1946 to 1955 and was the brother, son, nephew, father, uncle and

grandfather of Old Boys. In 1949 Brian was awarded a Council Scholarship. He was a member of the athletics team (1951-55, premiership 1953, premiership Vice-Captain 1955), the 1st XI (1954, and 1955 premiership) and the 1st XVIII (1953-55 including the 1953-54 premierships). He was awarded triple colours. Brian was 1949 Junior School Captain, a 1954 and 1955 School Prefect, and 1955 Captain of Lawson-MacFarland House. Brian graduated from the Victorian Pharmacy College (1960) and after working in London returned to Australia in 1962 to work in the family pharmacy chain Henry Francis. He worked it in partnership with his father (1967-81) and then as a sole trader until 2001. Bill joined the Alexander Morrison Circle to show his support for Scotch. He died on 5 December 2015.

Bequest Program

Alexander Morrison was Principal of Scotch College from 1857 to 1903, and was instrumental in building the School into the leading educational institution that it is today. His vision, energy, financial management and Scottish thrift all combined to make him a remarkable Principal whose legacy we all still enjoy.

In 2003 it was decided to name the bequest society after Dr Morrison, to help perpetuate those qualities of nurturing and vision which were so characteristic of the man.

Anyone indicating that he or she will remember Scotch College through a bequest will automatically become a member of the Alexander Morrison Circle, regardless of the size of the bequest. Membership of the Circle is free, and is the school’s way of recognising the commitment and support of individuals towards the long-term health and excellence of Scotch College.

Scotch owes an enormous debt to the forethought and generosity of the men and women who have bequeathed funds and other property to the school to support its continuing development. These bequests are reflected in buildings, scholarships, endowments, books, equipment and land, and all this support has helped the school to fulfil its purpose and vision.

If you are considering including a bequest in your will to Scotch College, there are four options from which to choose:

1. Scotch College Building Fund

2. Scotch College Foundation Scholarship Fund

3. Scotch College Indigenous Scholarship Fund

4. Scotch College Foundation, as a contribution to its Capital Fund (income from which is paid each year to the school for its general purpose)

Scotch College recommends that you seek independent financial and legal advice with regard to the implications of making gifts or bequests of these types.

You may choose to discuss your wishes or ideas with Sandra Dick, Bequest Manager on (03) 9810 4150, especially if you would like to tailor your gift to a particular purpose.

All communication with the school about bequests is, of course, treated in the strictest confidence.

Ethan Flemming (Year 11)

Bill Tingate (’55)

Bill attended Scotch from 1951 to 1955 and was the cousin, son, nephew, father and grandfather of Old Boys. In 1955 he was a Probationer,

a Cadet Quarter Guard member, and rowed in the 1st VIII. Bill graduated with a diploma of civil engineering (1960) from RMIT and worked as a civil engineer and project manager. Bill’s many involvements with the OSCA included being a player, supporter, secretary and vice-president of the Old Scotch Football Club, and he was also active in the Old Scotch Athletics Club, Old Scotch Bushwalking Club, Old Scotch Collegians’ Lodge, Koomerang Ski Club, Cardinal Club, Heritage Club and the Old Scotch Lodge. He was 1990 OSCA President. Bill became a member of the Alexander Morrison Circle in appreciation of his Scotch education and later involvements. He died on 20 February 2016.

Brian generously committed funds to the Scotch College Building Fund and Bill chose to direct his legacy gift to the Future (Endowment) Fund. Both men and are thanked sincerely for their foresight and generosity.

Executive Director’s Report

“I like the facilities that we can use. The labs are well laid out and there’s heaps we can explore.”

Charlie Lines-Perrier (Year 8)

It was a scene never before witnessed in Morrison Street: there they were, approximately 2000 Scotch Family members, sitting on chairs out on the road in balmy spring weather, all eagerly watching the official opening of the brand new Sir Zelman Centre for Science. It was the early evening of an auspicious day: Scotch’s 165th birthday, Thursday 6 October 2016, and an event to file away for posterity.

In typical Melbourne style, a wintry Wednesday gave way to a Thursday of blue skies, warm weather and a light breeze. Then it was back to winter the next day. But Thursday was tailor-made for outdoor celebrations, with guests arriving, and mingling on the concourse of the Centre for Science, in the Peter Henderson Foyer and Atrium and out on Morrison Street, enjoying conversation, drinks and finger food.

The celebrations kicked off at 5pm, with tours of the magnificent Centre for Science for VIP guests, capably led by boys from Years 6, 11 and 12 supported by Scotch Science staff.

At 7pm Principal, Tom Batty, welcomed guests and spoke of the significance of the date, and the impetus for science at Scotch which would flow from the new Centre for Science. He envisaged a future Scotch boy, born today, celebrating his 165th birthday on 6 October 2181 with a group of his classmates, after the boys had run their daily marathon — such would be the advances in medical science.

The boys would drink a toast to the Scotch people of the 2010s who had had the vision to support the construction of what was by then a 165-year-old building (undoubtedly much refurbished over the years).

Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel, one of the guests of honour at the launch, spoke next, pointing out that the new science facility was to be named in honour of a man of law — Sir Zelman Cowen — who, when speaking to the Royal Society of NSW in 1981, had said: ‘My qualifications and capacities to “talk science” are very poor.’

‘With all due respect to Sir Zelman and to Lady Cowen,’ Dr Finkel said, ‘we don’t believe his claim to have known very little about science. The project of his life was to make the world a better place. He approached the law as one of the tools we humans can use to go about it.

‘And he approached science in exactly the same way — with the triple benefit of an incisive legal brain, a curious spirit, and a humanist heart. In that way he saw the future more clearly than many of the scientists of the day.’

Speaking of the challenge of a future of escalating change, Dr Finkel advised young people to, ‘Study what you love, follow your curiosity, give your all to education, and master it to the best of your ability. Master a discipline’ he said, ‘but never let your first degree define you ... Learn how to learn, and then you can conceive how to create, so that you will be one of the creative workers who defines what the year 2051 will turn out to be.’

A stirring Scotch Pipes and Drums performance followed Dr Finkel’s address, and a time lapse video magically condensed two years of Centre for Science construction work into three minutes.

School Council Chairman, Hon Dr David Kemp AC (‘59), spoke of ‘the wonderful journey through which the Scotch Family has shown its amazing support to this project, which will put Scotch at the forefront of school education in science’.

It was then time for the building’s official opening, performed by guest of honour Lady Anna Cowen, as she cut the cardinal, gold and blue ribbon and declared the building open, to sustained applause.

Lady Cowen spoke next, describing the Centre for Science as ‘a brilliant facility, the likes of which may not exist in any comparable school’. She congratulated Scotch and its ‘remarkable close-knit and proud community for this wonderful achievement’. Lady Cowen said her husband had a special interest in architecture, and was delighted when the Royal Australian Institute of Architects named a building in his honour. ‘If I were one of the judges,’ she said, ‘this building would have my vote for 2016!’

Following a blessing of the building by School Chaplain, Rev Doug Campbell, the Scotch Symphony Orchestra ably performed Jupiter from Gustav Holst’s The Planets suite, accompanied by a spectacular laser light show projected onto the north facade of the building.

It was a highly successful launch of a building for the ages.

Executive Director’s ReportThe Scotch College Foundation Australian Art Show

The Scotch College Foundation Australian Art Show was held in September to raise funds for the Scotch College Indigenous Scholarship Program and Tiwi College.

An array of art from some of Australia’s finest contemporary artists was on display. Featured artists included Kane Alexander, Tanya Baily, David Beaumont, David Bromley, Donald Cameron (’44), Mark Chew, Lavinia Cuming, Nathan Djerrkura (’06), Sarah Gabriel, Georgie Gall, Harvey Hopper (’15), Deborah Hunter Mills, Christopher Jewitt (’05), Sally Joubert, Ralf Kempken, Caroline Kennedy, Rob La Nauze (’64), Susie Leahy Raleigh, Mark Mason, Casandra Mastoris, Rick Matear, Amanda McColl, Anne McMaster, Simone Neal, Anzack Newman (’10), Allister Paterson, Donald Ramsay, Ben Shearer, Melissa Skirton-Cussell, Peter James Smith, Glenn Todd, Bob Wade OAM (’49), Victoria Watts, Will Wilson and Philip Wisher (’84). Rebecca Hossack very generously donated a number of works from her London Gallery.

The Art Show raised $120,000 for the Scotch College Indigenous Scholarship Program. The program aims to embed in indigenous and non-indigenous students, staff and the broader school community the foundational belief that education is both the key and hope for the future of indigenous Australians.

Our Indigenous Scholarship Program ensures that, during the most influential years of their lives, some 1880 Scotch boys have opportunity to learn from, and develop friendships with, indigenous students. In the last 11 years, 17 indigenous students have successfully completed Year 12 and have enriched the school’s social, academic, sporting and other co-curricular activities and programs. Five completed their VCE this year.

The Art Show also raised $40,000 to support the Quickstart numeracy and literacy program at Tiwi College.

The official opening was held on Thursday 6 September. Principal, Tom Batty opened the art show, and Old Boy, Anzack Newman (’10) presented the school with a magnificent work. It is envisaged that

this will take pride of place in the Lithgow Centre. Anzack also spent time painting during the Art Show, much to the delight of current boys and visitors to the show.

The miniature art show, featuring works from current Scotch boys, Tiwi College students, the Chairman of Council, the Principal, the Head of the Junior School and the featured artists was a real highlight of the show.

Old Boy, Philip Wischer (’84) generously presented the school with a portrait of former master, Don Macmillan on the night.

Foundation Board members, Kirsten Macleod and Louise Murdoch, with Georgie Gall, Abigail Hand, Monique Johnson-King, Kristine Lempriere and Sally Upjohn, are sincerely thanked for their support in bringing this enriching event to fruition.

Foundation President’s Dinner

The Boykett Room in the Cardinal Pavilion was packed to the rafters on 17 May 2016, as Scotch Family members gathered to enjoy an evening of fellowship and fun at the Scotch College Foundation President’s Dinner.

At the dinner, School Principal, Tom Batty launched the fundraising appeal for the Scotch College Indigenous Scholarship Fund.

Old Boy, Tony Briggs (’85) was interviewed about his time at Scotch, and the impact that his experiences at school had on him as he pursued a career in acting, directing and producing. Tony is perhaps best known for writing and directing the popular Australian film, The Sapphires.

Tony has kindly accepted our invitation to be Patron of the fundraising appeal, which aims to raise $5 million to perpetually endow the Indigenous Scholarship Program.

East Melbourne Glen Chapter Events

The East Melbourne Glen (EMG) Chapter program of events was again well supported in 2016. The Easter Chapel Service in the Littlejohn Memorial Chapel, held on Tuesday 22 March, was well attended. The Winter Luncheon was held on Wednesday 8 June in the Cardinal Pavilion’s Boykett Room, where current parent, Laura Anderson was our guest of honour. Over 130 guests attended the luncheon. The EMG Christmas Luncheon was held on Friday 16 December in the Boarders’ Dining Room, at which more than 240 Old Boys enjoyed a festive luncheon featuring an address from Foundation Vice President and School Councillor, Doug Lording (’64).

Alexander Morrison Circle Cocktail Party

The Sir Clive Steele Rooftop of the brand new Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science was the ideal location for a get-together of members of the Alexander Morrison Circle, hosted by the Scotch College Foundation on the balmy spring evening of 3 November 2016.

The Alexander Morrison Circle was established in 2003 to recognise the generosity of those in the community who have indicated their intention to remember Scotch College in a bequest as part of their charitable intention.

It was the first Scotch event to be held on the rooftop since the grand opening of the Centre for Science on 6 October. Guests sheltered from the mild sunshine under the photovoltaic cells, or wandered among the newly-planted indigenous plant boxes in the rooftop gardens, enjoying drinks and finger food.

On the rooftop, I was delighted to brief guests about the Centre for Science, then lead the group on a tour of all levels of the building. Evidence that the boys and staff have already taken up residence in the building was clear, ahead of the scheduled occupancy date of Term 1, 2017.

It was all most enjoyable and informative, and a highly appropriate first social event to be staged on the Centre for Science rooftop.

Ian Roach Foundation Concert

The Foundation’s second annual Ian Roach Foundation Concert was held on Saturday 26 November, which again featured the wonderful talents of cellist Yelian He (’02) and pianist Yasmin Rowe. Funds raised were directed to Scotch College Indigenous Scholarship Program.

Executive Director’s Report

“It gives Scotch students the opportunity to learn in a world class facility. The study areas are like a second home to me.”

Matt Cheah (Year 12)

Summary

This has undoubtedly been a busy and energised time for the Scotch College Foundation. The successful completion of the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science is a great credit to the Scotch Family. To see the building in use, with its boundless possibilities, is a testament to the vision and planning behind the building.

That our community has invested in such a tangible and demonstrative way is testament to the school’s proud history and its exciting future. Principal, Tom Batty, together with Chairman, David Kemp and the School Council have set the School on an exciting course, and this project has clearly illustrated that Scotch simply cannot be everything it aspires to be without its community pushing hard from behind.

The Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science is the first in a series of exciting campus developments that will consolidate Scotch’s position. The Design and Technology Centre and the Dining Hall/Cafeteria are further precursors to a very exciting vision for the Senior School precinct that will be annunciated in time.

The success of the capital campaign for the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science was also a tribute to the energy, commitment and drive of Foundation President and Capital Campaign Committee Chairman, Michael Robinson. Michael led the campaign with distinction, and he continues to lead the Foundation with great determination.

I would also like to acknowledge the contributions made by the Foundation Board during 2016. Board members have worked with energy and passion to advance Scotch. I also acknowledge

the collaborative and respectful working relationship that the Foundation has with the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association, and I particularly acknowledge the leadership of Doug Lording (’64) who was OSCA President in 2016.

I would like to thank and acknowledge the work of the Development Office staff over the past year. It has been another busy year; a year that has seen some changes as we gear up again to advance Scotch.

I said last year that I hoped everyone who had supported the capital campaign for the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science project shared in the pride of seeing the building officially opened and in use, and that I hoped they felt they have helped to achieve something very special. I also hope they feel we have invested their money well.

I sincerely thank you all for your support, and look forward to your involvement in the future endeavours of the Scotch College Foundation.

The Alexander Morrison Circle was established in 2003 to recognise the generosity of those in the community who have indicated their intention to remember Scotch College in a bequest as part of their charitable intention. Membership is presented to anyone who indicates such a bequest, regardless of the level of financial commitment. † = Deceased

Alexander Morrison Circle

ALEXANDERMORRISONCIRCLE

The Alexander Morrison CircleThe Alexander Morrison Circle was formed in 2003 with 26 inaugural members. Membership has grown steadily, and the Circle now has 318 members.

The purpose of the Alexander Morrison Circle is to encourage members of the Scotch Family to make a bequest to the school. It also recognises those who have already made this generous commitment. Your membership of the Circle enables you to be kept informed of the achievements and activities of our boys. You will also be invited to special performances and events the school regularly holds.

Over the years the Foundation has received many unexpected bequests, and Scotch is most grateful for them. However, once a person has confirmed a bequest, the Foundation believes it is important to acknowledge, recognise and thank the person confirming the bequest during his or her lifetime. This is the purpose of the Alexander Morrison Circle.
