Vice-Principa l’s Report

RowingAfter a very strong season of racing and success in the Victorian, NSW, National Championships (Australian Schoolboy Championship VIII) and theAPS Head of the River, the complete Scotch College 1st VIII, rather than a composite national crew, were selected to represent Australia at theWorld Junior Rowing Championships in Lithuania as the Junior Eight.

Since leaving Australia the crew competed at the Henley Royal Regatta in England, where they reached the semi-final before losing to the eventualwinners. After this valuable race experience the crew trained in northern Italy at Commabio joining the Australian team at Varese when they arrived.

In Trakai, Lithuania, the Scotch/Australian crew qualified for the ‘A’ final of the World Junior Rowing Championships. With the largest field andhighest standard for some time in this event, semi-finals were needed. In the tougher of the two semi-finals the Scotch/Australian crew rowedthrough the field to beat several crews, including the United States to make the A Final. This consigned the USA crew to the B Final for the first timein their history at this event. In the A Final, the crew competed against crews from Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Romania and Serbia in the finals, finishing in 5th place. Of the 11 Australian crews at the World Championships, 4 crews managed to qualify for the A Final, with theScotch/Australian Eight one of these. Chapla in’s Reflect ion

Communication and CommunityAt Scotch one of the premises on which we operate is that persons are made in theimage of God, and are to be treated with dignity and respect.

Of course, in none of us is the ‘image’ of the God and father of the Lord Jesus Christcompletely obvious and it’s sometimes hard to detect. One single news event in a globalmyriad of human tragedy, the killing of a young Australian, Christopher Lane, in Duncan,Oklahoma was senseless. The shock and shame of the citizens of Duncan has been evident.Such events make one ask what is it that creates a civil society, and how easily can it bedestroyed?

It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, “There can be no high civility without a deep morality”.If he is right, we need to be sure we have found that deep morality. It is probably a tautology tosay that communication creates community. The New Testament makes clear that it is thequality of communication that creates healthy communities.

Christians should be specialists in quality communication because they are called to speak thetruth in love. Sadly this is not always the case. Jesus says our speech should be frank andcandid. Our ‘yes’ should mean yes, and our ‘no’ should mean no. The apostle Paul teases outthis point in his letters to young churches, especially to the Ephesians (chapter 4). The threequestions of the childhood rule of thumb - “Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?” would serveus well today. The words that come as a gift to others, with encouragement, reassurance andhope, will just as surely bring blessing to the speaker.

Schluter and Lee, of the Relationships Foundation, have coined the term ‘Relational Proximity’to describe “a closeness of relationship between two individuals, through which each is able torecognise the other more fully as a complete and unique human being”. They have suggestedfive ways of categorizing and even evaluating the quality of relationships in an organisation:

• commonality - a common or shared purpose

• continuity - frequency, regularity in sustaining contact

• directness - lack of mediation

• parity - approximate balance of power and influence

• multiplexity - contact in more than one role or context

Assessing relational quality is a sociological challenge, but demonstrating it is foundational toany healthy community. As Tim Keller says, “there is no real ‘being in the image of God’ unlessyou have a piece of the world to care for”. Understanding this obligation and responsibility is atthe heart of Christian morality. As parents, grandparents and educators in the Scotchcommunity our calling is to help our young people learn how to live as bearers of the divineimage.

The Perelberg Award 2013This annual award for ‘Exemplary Scotch Spirit’ is alternately granted one year to a currentstudent, or to one who left the previous year, and the next year to an Old Scotch Collegian.

The award is made in memory of a former student of Scotch, Ashley Perelberg, a member ofthe Class of ’92, who died in 1993 from a heart attack while training during his first year atuniversity. Ashley had been very well known at Scotch for his full and enthusiastic involvementin many aspects of the School – he exemplified what we often refer to as the Scotch Spirit:striving for personal excellence whilst recognising and serving the needs of others; applyinghigh personal standards and showing compassion for those not able to reach those samestandards.

Ashley’s family wished to create a perpetual memorial to Ashley and presented a magnificentaward – a silver sculpture depicting the penguin parade at Phillip Island – inspired by Ashley’sdevotion to the annual Scotch-at-Cowes camps. The Perelberg Trophy is permanently displayedin the Senior School Library, and the winner each year receives a splendid silver replica.

Nominations for the 2013 Perelberg Award are being sought from the Scotch community. Those eligible for nomination are current Year 12 students and old Boys from the Class of2012. A nomination form is included in this edition of the Torch Newsletter (page 16) or may be downloaded from the Scotch College web site www.scotch.vic.edu.au

Further enquiries should be directed to the Principal’s Office 9810 4321.

Family Day Art Installation: Suspended Family TreeLithgow Foyer

As the visiting artist-in-residence I was fortunate enough to collaborate with the art studentsfrom years 7 & 8 on a project conceived especially for Family Day.

Using found materials, the students were asked to create a small, fun sculpture of either afantasy figure or a creative self-portrait. Individually each work is unique and personal, whiletogether they create something greater than themselves. The use of the water bottlesreferences the fountain below the sculpture as well as the link the school has to water.

The installation is representative of the structure of ‘Family’, be it one’s immediate family orthe greater family of Scotch. And just like a family, the sculpture is made up of many parts, branching out repeatedly, with each section related to the other through counter-weight. Afragile balancing act is required to keep all the individual parts in check, and only together canthe sculpture maintain its elegant movement and grace.
