PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE- Les Boyd

Every year in March the board of directors meets to review the operating budget for the fiscal year beginning May 1. It has to be done in March because the Club bills annual dues on March 31 and the board has to set the dues rate for the following year. The biggest financial driver for the Club is the number of Members paying dues in each category.

For the upcoming year, the Club feels very good about membership growth, and as such, we see no need to raise dues for the next fiscal year, but remember, it’s not the staff’s job to invite

new Members to join your Club. Membership is by invitation, and only current Members can invite someone to join. So, help do your part to perpetuate the growth of your Club by talking to your friends and neighbors about why you joined Hendersonville Country Club.

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored a new Member this year. What’s a better way to enjoy those incentive rewards than by visiting the Club?

I’ll see you at the Club!

MANAGER’S MESSAGE- Anthony Chelena

The grill kitchen is about finished and the construction dust has died down so now we can offer lunch accommodations a little more comfortable to golfers. Sometime very soon, we’ll announce by email, a reopening of the Ward Room to serve an abbreviated lunch menu to men and women golfers. Breakfast and lunch are still being served 7 days a week at the Main Clubhouse and the Ward Room will also be serving abbreviated lunch from 11:00am to 3:00pm 7 days a week. The Grill will fully reopen in May. Watch your email for the details.

While the Grill renovation project has been getting a lot of attention, there has been a lot of other capital spending going on. We re-paved approximately ½ mile of cart paths. We put new roofs on 6 buildings on the property such as golf course restrooms, our irrigation pump house, and the rain shelter at the pool.We purchased quite a bit of replacement pool furniture including chaise loungers, dining chairs and tables. Finally, nearly a year after signing a contract to repave our main entrance, the work is almost complete. We are happy about all these projects.

If there is one word to describe the feeling among the Club staff this season it is “excited”. We can’t wait to see how many new Member join your Club this year, and we can’t wait to see you enjoying your Club with your friends.

CHEF’S CORNER-Steve Boeger

NAVIGATING THE CHANGING SEASA few highlights from NOLA and the Chef to Chef Conference.

My flight was cancelled as I laid my head down Saturday night, when my phone began to ring. It was American Airlines working their magic to get me to NOLA in time for my conference. Well, they did just that as I arrived in New Orleans at 8:30am. After I checked into the hotel, I began to stroll the city on foot, and stopped for breakfast at Brennan’s. I can now say that I ate Gumbo

with notes of dark Roux and the Holy Trinity, which you’ll find on our menus from time to time.

Later that day I attended my first seminar with Executive Chef, Tory McPhail of Commander’s Palace and SoBou in NOLA and his Chef de Cuisine, Chris Lynch, who ironically grew up in Philadelphia. I also met Steve Redzikowski, Chef / Owner of Oak on 14th, in Boulder, Colorado and Acorn at the Source in Denver, Colorado, Chef Robert Carter, who was credited on shaping the Charleston food scene, Chef Withers from Highland Country Club and Peter Jarvis, Owner / Founder of Triar Seafood Co. in Hollywood, Florida. They were discussing the ongoing challenges that Chefs face such as sourcing responsibly-harvested, domestic seafood. Topics included wild vs. farmed fish, the challenges facing domestic aquaculture, how federal rules and regulations are effecting sourcing and allocations for the commercial seafood industry, the effects of global warming as it relates to seafood production, imports vs. domestic, recreational fisheries vs. the commercial seafood industry and what seasonally-inspired seafood trends can benefit your members.

Triar Seafood’s Peter Jarvis invited me to eat broiled oysters with a group of these chefs at Drago’s, which was in the hotel I was staying at. Before I knew it, a connection was born and I finished my last night in NOLA in the kitchen with Tory McPhail and Chris Lynch at Commanders Palace. I’m still pinching myself. Mr. Brennan came over and was such a conversationalist that he talked even more than me...a total of 30 minutes. With alll these connections being made and moments shared amongst talented chefs, I am happy to announce that I will be flying fresh seafood up from Triar seafood for upcoming specials and club events. Triar is supplying some of the best chefs and restaurants in the industry, and HCC can count themselves as one establishment among them.

GOLF TIPS- Jay King

An even par round of golf is what a highly skilled player would make to have a great score. Getting on the green in regulation and using two putts

will give you par. With 18 holes using two putts you can see how 36 putts per round is more than half of our par (70) total. Thinking of putting this way will show us the importance of putting. Unfortunately this is the area where I find our members practice and take instruction the least. The short game is where you can improve your stroke average the most and all of us need to get on board.

It is important to have good technique without being too technical. There are many ways to strike the ball, however your clubface needs to be square at impact for your full swing and the same in your putting stroke. I have noticed an increase in improvement and understanding for my students due to the usage of video during lessons. I would like to promote a tool I am using for putting instruction. T.O.M.I (The Optimum Motion Instructor). T.O.M.I measures: alignment at address and impact, path of stroke at impact, stroke path and rotation, shaft angle, effective loft, impact spot on clubface, and velocity and stroke tempo. Most of the information is to allow me an absolute reading during the lesson process, but it helps the student understand patterns in your putting motion. The data compiled can be stored to view in the future for comparison or to look back at a time when you were putting well. This is a great tool to use in selecting a putter that fits your stroke. In the coming months I will be promoting some group putting instruction to use this technology during a les-son format. I hope to see everyone working on their putting this season.

Welcome April!

Our Opening Coffee was on March 28, which kicked off our 2019 Golf Season! It was so great to see everybody after a very cold and wet winter. I am looking forward to seeing all our “FloridaGals” over the next few weeks. I want to say a special “thank you” to Terry Stein for putting together our invaluable pocket directories. Awesome job!

April Showers bring May flowers but in between the raindrops it brings out all the women golfers. Our April Shoot (Division A& B ) will begin on Tuesday, April 2 with play on April 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25 and 30. Your 3 best net scores in each flight will help you secure a winning spot.

Our first WCWGA Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, at Thornblade Country Club in South Carolina. If you are interested in attending, please make sure you leave your check for Kathy Morgan. The following Tournament will be at neighboring Kenmure for Tuesday May 7. Please check the board, sign up and pay.

The new rules are posted in the Women’s Locker Room. If you have any questions feel free to ask me or Jay to clarify. Correcting my post from last month, there are actually more than 30 new rules, not 20!

FYI- Keeping the flag pin (new rule) in while putting will speed up play!

As Rules and Handicap Committee Chair, I will be checking that everyone is posting their scores on a regular basis. I will arbitrarily pick one date a month to check random postings. Please remember to post all your scores. It’s not a punishment. It really helps when you are competing that you are measured for all your playing efforts, not just the good ones!

More news next month once our season officially begins!

ON THE GREEN- Craig DeJong

April is the “official” start to the golf season at Hendersonville Country Club. If you did not play golf much over the winter, you’ll notice a few changes from the work we performed. One significant upgrade was to our cartpaths. Numerous areas were completely removed and replaced with fresh, smooth asphalt.

We’re also checking the sand depth in all the bunkers. If a bunker does not have a minimum of 4”-5” of sand, we will add additional sand. This will become routine maintenance ensuring that at the start of each new golf season all bunkers have adequate sand.

Looking ahead, in May we will begin the removal of 10 large trees throughout the golf course. These trees are unhealthy and have been identified as a safety hazard. We’ve hired a contractor for this project which should take a couple of weeks to complete.

The spring transition at Hendersonville Country Club can be slow and erratic. While the cool season turf types flourish, bluegrass, ryegrass, etc., the warm season bermudagrass can be temperamental. Our bermudagrass greens up at various rates throughout the golf course due to traffic wear, shade and air and soil temperatures. Soil and air temperatures are probably the biggest climatic variables that affect bermudagrass breaking dormancy. Typically bermudagrass doesn’t begin to green up until mid to late May and requires soil temperatures near 70 degrees and consistently higher nighttime temperatures in the 60 degree range. Our staff also has a role to play. Once we feel the bermudagrass is ready to go, we’ll begin to fertilize and perform various cultural practices to help expedite the process. This is a time of the year to practice being patient, including myself. So, while you’re out playing golf on a beautiful 70 degree day and wondering why the bermudagrass is still brown or slightly green, remember a few of the key factors it needs to fully transition to green.

MEMBERSHIP-Sarah Cioffi

Now that the weather seems to finally be breaking for spring, I am having the absolute pleasure of meeting and welcoming so many wonderful people into membership. I am very optimistic that the closer we get to the kickoff of the Tennis, Golf and Pool season, that the traffic will only continue to increase. You’ll be seeing a lot of me each day giving tours and welcoming people to the Club. If you see a new face, I encourage you to say hello and introduce yourself . Who knows, you might meet your new best friend.

Last month we welcomed Shane and Janelle Payne, Rick and Gael Torcise, Charles and Deborah Thibos, Harlan and Sharon Frymire, Clay Eddleman and Richard Cooke and Ann McFadden.

If you have friends, family, colleagues or neighbors that you think might be interested in the Club, please do me a favor and grab a preview packet from the membership office to give to them. This special is not the kind that comes around all the time, and we are so happy to extend this invitation to those members of our community and the surrounding communities surrounding.
