SCOPE OF THIS WORKSHOP
NP08 “Kaon Rare Decay Experiments” WGThursday, 06 March 2008
convener: Takeshi K. Komatsubara (KEK, J-PARC Center)
In the NP08 circulars:Since the time of the initial facility design, many new proposals and initiatives have been developed. While the day-1 experiments are yet to be started, it is about the time to start the discussion for the future experiments.
In this meeting, we would like to explore a long-term physics program after the completion of the "phase-1" construction.
The focus is on the future: “phase-2”.

FOCUS OF THIS WORKSHOP

Major Upgrades under Discussions
! Neutrons and Muons– Neutron equipments: How to fill the 23 beamlines (so far about ten
were funded).
– Muon equipments: Among four beamlines, only one will be in operation in 2008. Others have to be funded.
! Hadrons– Must construct several kaon beamlines plus a primary beamline.
– Hadron hall expansion: Necessary to accommodate many user groups.
– Any future possibilities recommended from PAC.
! Neutrinos– Power upgrade.
– The 2 km detector for T2K.
! Nuclear Transmutation
– The major item for Phase 2.
! Others
– Energy upgrade to 50 GeV.
– Third extraction line or Fast Extraction at Hadron Hall?

Expectation from NP08
! Neutrinos + Approved Hadrons :
– Reconfirm the construction schedule.
– Desired scenario for the beamtime schedule.
– Needed upgrades for 2009 – 2014.
! Non Approved Experiments:
– Find scientific opportunities.
– Desired location of the experiment.
– Cost (if known) and other requests to the J-PARC.
– Potential participants.
– International contributions, if any.
– Any other issues.
! Preparation for the Users Steering Committee:
– Timeline of all proposed projects.
– Priority setting among individual proposals, if at all possible.
– Demand to the accelerator.
– International competition and/or coordination.
