Scope of the ‘‘Tsukuba Symposium on Carbon Nanotube inCommemoration of its 10th Anniversary’’

Ten years ago, the carbon nanotube was discovered at the laboratory of Sumio Iijima in NECFundamental Research Laboratory, Tsukuba. In commemorating the 10th anniversary of the discovery, the Science Academy of Tsukuba, the Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST), together withNEC Corporation, sponsored this symposium in order to pay tribute to this extraordinary event. In thedecade, we have witnessed the rapid development of the carbon nanotube researches in such a diverse areaof interests (ten years ago, who could have imagined this!). The bulk of knowledge acquired within thisshort period of time, in physics, chemistry and in novel technologies, is already enormous, and it seems it isstill growing at an extraordinary pace. The carbon nanotube is in fact one of the most spectacular and mostversatile emerging materials of this age.

The program of the symposium included general reviews about the field of carbon nanotubes, as well asreviews of major advances that had been made in the field after the discovery. The symposium also includedin its scope, all the most recent significant results concerning the science and technology of carbonnanotubes. Timely reviews and discussions of the entire nanotube research were carried out in thissymposium.

An exhibition event was also planned executed along with the oral and the poster session. Twentyexhibitors displayed their carbon nanotube related products and demonstrations.

The vital statistics of the Symposium participation are given below:

Number of registered participants: 640Number of contributed papers: 131Number of invited papers: 29Number of exhibitors: 20Number of press correspondents: 25
