STAN HITCHCOCK

Born in Kansas City, Stan Hitchcock has been in-terested in country music since his first guitar lessonat the age of twelve. He's always been an outdoortype too, since his dad was a rancher and cattlebreeder.

While in the Navy, Stan organized a group ofmusically inclined sailors into a unit that becamethe official band of the U. S. S. Bryce Canyon. After his discharge, he became interested in theneglected children of the Springfield, Missouri area, and with Dr. Bob Johnson, a pastor in a Springfieldchurch, he opened the Good Samaritan Boys Ranch.Through radio broadcasts on behalf of the BoysRanch he came to the attention of Don Law, theDean of Country/Western producers, and con-sequently has recorded two albums and manysingles on the Epic label. He is currently riding highwith one of the most entertaining TV shows aroundthe country.

WILL THIS PTA 14fEETING

PLEASE COME TO ORDER

Once upon a time there was agirl from Anson, Texas, withlong black hair ... and whenshe sang a song she was veryvery good.

The girl's name was Jeannie, and upon her arrival in MusicCity USA, as with others be-fore her, she failed to findthe immediate contract shewas hoping for. And that wasbad.

Jeannie did, however, be-come acquainted at once withPaul Perry, a local dee jay. That was good.

Paul listened to her sing. and kinda liked what he

heard. He liked what he saw,too ... the tiny Texan hadcharm! He learned that herfull name was Jeannie C.Riley. And he agreed to helpher in search for a recordcontract. But, even Paul, whocarries a pretty big stick onRecord Row, didn't have alotof instant luck in the venture. That was bad.

Then, Jeannie signed Paul asher personal manager, and hesaw to it that she was sched-uled on several road shows. That was good.

Treading in the footsteps ofcountry music's all-time greats,Jeannie C. Riley.

In due time, Paul did pro-cure a contract for Jeannie onone particular label. So now, here's where you're s'poze tocome in and say, "That wasgood". At least, that would bethe logical reaction. But no,that was bad. It was notactually bad for Jeannie ... orfor Paul ... but it was bad. Abad scene, more or less. Andif you don't know who suf-

Lee Arnold, visiting in town fromWJRZ (right), was one of thefirst C/W dee jays to ever hearabout the famous PTA meeting, when he stopped by Jeannie's re-cording session. Producer, ShelbySingleton (left), also deserves abig round of applause on thePlantation giant he has given allthe world.

fered most, you have, withouta doubt, been doing your RipVan Winkle number!

However, what really countsis that almost before anyoneknew what was happening PaulPerry marched up to ShelbySingleton and said, "I imagineyou wonder why I called thismeeting ... of the HARPERVALLEY PTA.'"

Little did Paul, of anyone

else, know when all the mem-bers of that PTA were intro-duced to the world that itwould excite an explosion ofsuccess so big the rumble ofit all stil roars on at an ear-splitting level. The oh's andah's are still being heard. Andthe steady ring of cash registersales still continues to clamourloudly, growing into gargantu-an -size figures.

Jeannie C. Riley ... the pertand petite princess of songfrom Anson, Texas ... has leftthe world astounded, amazed, and overwhelmed. The com-motion she has created withher smashing success leavesblank looks on faces every-where. I don't doubt thateven the Bird of Paradise isstartled at the bang-up job ofblessings he brought inJeannie's direction!

Her success will undoubtedlygo down in history. Her abil-ity to perform on the plat-form of today's top stars hadalready been proven with Bell-o u t shows happening over

Paul Perry (left), Jeannie's per-sonal manager, always believedthat Miss Riley was gonna besomething to behold incountry music ... and who canargue now!

... and over ... and over again.Jeannie C. Riley has definitely"made it". There's no argu-ment in that.

So, what can one writeabout the phenomenal Jeannie? You can't say that she couldnever sing another song asw e 11. She already has analbum out to prove that. Youcan't say that her spotlightwill be turned off just as fastas it was turned on. Solidbookings, well in advance, in-cluding the Hollywood Palace, prove that. And you can'tjustify wasting a lot of timesearching through Webster forwords to describe Jeannie C.

Riley ... every adjective inthe book has already beenused and used again! TheJeannie C. Riley success storytold itself ... the day Planta-tion Records released " HARPERVALLEY PTA" . That leavesJeannie C. Riley ... the person. This is another situation en-tirely. No one individual writercould ever feel they'd com-pletely covered the realJeannie C. Riley. Simply be-cause it's beyond the averageperson to fully understand theintricate mind that belongs tothe little Harper Valley honey. Her manager, Paul Perry, knows her best, and he's been

Tom T. Hall (right), writer of"Harper Valley PTA", wasprobably unaware of the musicmonster he was helping tomake in this scene.

From Harper Valley to the SanFernando Valley ... Jeannie ar-rives for "Jeannie C. Riley Day"in Los Angeles. KBBQ disc jock-ey, Bob Jackson gladly asists inwelcoming the pretty Miss fromPlantation Records.

a big compliment to hercareer, because of that fact.

Paul has stated, "Jeanniespends a lot of her timeunder the spell of historicalhousing structures, which issomething so special to herthat the common mind auto-matically misjudges her reac-tions. And first impressions ofJeannie can often be mislead-ing. She's a friendly Texan, maybe even a little toofriendly. But that's justJeannie."

Jeannie C. Riley ... themythical mini -skirted widow... is actually the Mrs. MickeyRiley, in private life. She hasone daugher by the name ofKim. Jeannie herself, bears agreat deal of resemblance toher own mom. Other membersof her family range all the

way from mechanics to bank-ers. She plays the guitar. Shewrites songs. And she likescasual clothes ... specificallyslacks. An internation fan clubis being formed in her honor, complete with mini -skirts andbracelets. She laughs easily. And she asks a lot of ques-tions.

Although she isn't as awareof it as a lot of the oldpros, she has added somethingabsolutely unique to the entiremusic industry. The chances ofanyone ever topping her suc-cess are remote. Even Jeanniewill have a hard time to keepahead of her current history -m a k ing progress. But rightnow, it is her only hope thatshe'll just be able to go on"livin the life of Riley" as atop recording star.

As I rounded the bend in theroad overlooking the spaciousthree hundred and fifty acreCARL SMITH RANCH, I wasentranced by the beauty ofthe sprawling ranch -style homeand the wide open fields ofgreen pasture where hundredsof black angus heifers andsleek quarter horses (manywith young colts) were grazingin the peaceful valley below. The scene was one of tran-quility, and the towering hillssurround the ranch -spreadseemed to echo in unison,"This is a special spot onGod's Green Earth!" I parkedmy car alongside the split- railfence in front of the mam-moth white barn where CarlSmith is likely to be foundwhen off the road tending hishigh-spirited, thoroughbredquarter horses.

As I entered the office onthe front side of the stablethere sat the King of CountryMusic himself, Carl Smith."Come on in, John," Carlsaid, "pull up a chair and resta spell." Soaked from head totoe from a morning's workcutting horses with his ranchforeman and his quarter horsetrainer, Carl looked like oneof those rugged cowpokes youmight see on a popular cigar-ette commercial. Carl's lovelywife, Goldie Hill, and his al-most teenage daughter Carlene."Hello, John, "Goldie said, witha smile in her voice that filledthe room with hospitality andwarmth, "are you going to tryyour hand at cutting horseswith Carl ?" "No," I replied,"I'll leave that to old proslike Carl-just thought I'd dropby to see how it's done. ""This is our oldest daugher,Carlene, "Goldie said. "She'sabout as crazy -over horses as

Carl has a round -table "read -in" of his own at home, ashe catches up on the latesthorsemen's news!

Every day's a rodeo when Carlis at home in Franklin!

her daddy. And the little fel-low out there riding the ponyis Carl, Jr. He's got horse--blood running through hisveins too."

After we'd finished ourcokes and cooled off a bit,we headed out to the frontcorral to watch Carl work hisfavorite cutting horses. WhenCarl gave the signal, the fore-man ran about: ten head ofcattle into the corral and Carlmounted his favorite stallion(and stud of the SMITHRANCH) to kick-off thesecond round of the cow -cutting parley for the morning. What followed was a typicalWestern Rodeo scene-Carl, sit-ting tall in the saddle, cuttingin and out among the steerslike an old cowhand back inthe days when the West wasreal "he-man" cattle country.

A picture of success ... CARL

"Watch when the little calfbegins to turn at the otherend of the corral, "Goldieshouted to me, perched atopthe white fence near the lead-in gate. "Watch how the studturns the calf back this way."And the scene that followedwas truly magnificant-a combi-nation of horse and riderworking together as a synchro-nized team like it had beenrehearsed for weeks on end.And as I watched Carl work-ing atop his prize stud, "RealBar," for the next half hour,I saw some of the finesthorsemanship I've seen inmany a day!

As the blistering sun ap-proached high -noon, Carl calleda halt to the day's cuttingactivities and we wanderedback to the stable to unsaddleand wash -down the steaming

mounts. As Carl was brushingdown his well- groomed stal-lion he commented: "We'llhave his first colts this nextSpring-if they're half as goodas he is I'll be happy." Thenafter hosing him down, Carlturned him over to one ofthe ranch -hands whose job itwas to walk the horse untilhe had cooled down from themorning's work. "Now let'shead to the house for a biteto eat," Carl said. "Man-I'mbushed!"

The prospect of the perfectranch -house was a needed re-fresher after a two-hour stintin the hot sun and dust. Carl,Pat Paterson (his trainer) andI sat down at the rusticWest ern -style breakfast tableopposite the kitchen bar whilehis wife, Goldie, hustled upsandwiches, potato chips, and

tall pitchers of iced tea andcold milk. Everything tastedgood and we sat around thetable exchanging "horse -talk"for the next hour or so.When Carl talks about horsesyou know he's in his rightgroove, for his horses are likemembers of his family and hespeaks of each animal like afather speaks of the uniquepersonality of each of hischildren.

Before heading back to theoffice, I wandered into theover -sized den where the storyof Carl Smith's successful re-cording career was told inpictures and plaque -form onthe walls. There were gold rec-ords, and TRADE MAGAZINECITATIONS which told ofCarl's countless hit recordingsfor the COLUMBIA folks. There were pictures which toldthe story of Carl's progressivesuccess as a top -name Countryentertainer and covers of allhis RECORD ALBUMS whichseemed to say in a languagestronger than words, "This isthe home of one of theGiants in the Recording In-dustry-the one and only,CARL SMITH!" And therealongside Carl's LP covers werethe jackets of GOLDIE HILL'Sbiggest -selling ALBUMS. A starin her own rights, Goldie ishappiest being simply Mrs. CarlSmith, mother of three beauti-ful children and wife of theman she labels, "the greatestperson in the world." "I loveto sing," Goldie told me, "butmy greatest claim to fame isright here as mistress of THECARL SMITH RANCH. We allhave a great life here to-gether."

In addition to being one ofMUSIC CITY'S most prominentand colorful citizens, CarlSmith is the No. 1 recordingartist and C&W entertainer inCanada. His Canadian Networktelevision Show runs away

"My pop's a better singer then your pop!"

with the top ratings, andwhen he makes his periodictrips north of the border tofilm these popular shows, fansfrom all over the CanadianContinent come in to watch"their favorite country singer"at work! And one of thehighlights of Carl's visit toCanada this year was theCALVARY STAMPEDE whereCarl's fans saw him mountedon his spirited horse headliningthe parade climaxing thispopular annual event.

As I pulled up the windingroad leading from the ranch, I

watched Carl slowly walkingup the hillside behind hishome with his ranch foremanand trainer. And if I were abetting man I'd bet they wereonce again involved in a deepconversation of Carl Smith'sfavorite subject: his famousline of bred quarter horsesand the future of the threehundred and fifty acre spreadwhich folks in these parts call,CARL SMITH COUNTRY.

Some time ago, Diana Trask gaveup her selected section 'neath thespotlight for the purpose of say-ing "I do"; and to those of us,who followed her career closely,it was like watching the end ofan old western movie. You knowthe kind ... where the suggestedhero always rode off into thehorizon! Well, Diana Trask hascertainly player her part in thecomplete delight of everyone, and as in those rare ole flicks, au-diences across the nation weresad to see her leave. But Diana, like the real pro she is, gracefullybowed out. After a period oftime, Diana along with her Amer-ican husband, returned to her na-tive land of Australia.

This recording business is seriousstuff./ Diana and hubby listen, with solemn faces, to play -back.

At that particular point inDiana's life, I wouldn't doubtthat even the kangaroos werejumping a little higher than ever... in honor of their country'ssongster. But there wassomething else ... somethingeven more significant ... that washappening in her honor. And thatwas Diana's record sales, back inthe states. The figures just con-tinued to grow by leaps andbounds! Her fans absolutely re-fused to let her stay out of thepicture completely.

However, it wasn't until afterthe birth of their second son, that Diana officially returned toher career life. She did so, byagreeing to produce a TV show

... providing the contract couldread: "Mr. and Mrs."! The resultshave left Australia thunderingwith cheers ever since ... asDiana and her partner went on toprepare the only Australian tele-vision series to ever be soldaround the world.

So, it's simple to see why, to-day, people are putting theirhands together in applause forthe gal they wanted back ... andended -up getting their way aboutit!

Even in childhood days, Dianastood out ... always advanced... from the ordinary world

about her. She was only seven-teen when she won "SwallowsParade" talent guest slot, in Mel -

bourne, Australia. From there sheappeared on GTV-9. But, televis-ion ... still a child, itself, in thatcountry ... left Diana somewhatunfulfilled with an ever-growingcuriosity concerning the rest ofthe world about her.

That's when Diana fell in lovewith jazz ... spending most ofher spare time working with ajazz group ... and later, going ona jazz tour. But that, too, beganto harden and crumble in impor-tance ... like sugar -n -spice gonebad ... and Diana's eager mindgrew dissatisfied with jazz. Shecraved something else.

After a brief return to TV,that particular "something else"turned out to be advanced musiclessons from a highly recognizedteacher in Sydney. It was thespecific era in Diana's life thatfound her as the "bright one" in

class during the daytime ... andat nite, she again, was the "brightspot" of every club she worked.

Only a short lapse of timewent by before the adjectivesoverflowed as Diana beganappearing with such names asFrank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr.,and Stan Freberg. The trade pap-ers were definitely not on thetrail of Diana Trask!

In 1959 America beckoned... and Diana answered the call... by returning once more tothe United States. Don McNeil'sBreakfast Club, heard daily onthe ABC Network, featured herfor one week. The results cameout in the form of a recordingcontract ... with Columbia...her first big contract ... a 7 -yearpact! Diana's initial release was"The Language of Love",followed by "Long Ago Last

Diana's in good hands with Pro-ducer, Buddy Killen, as he says"It's shapin' up ... but ... ".

Summer". They both blew thelid off charts and went zoomingto the top.

Two more marks of successwere made on Diana's calendarwith the Jack Benny Show andthe Mitch Miller Show. FoxStudios added another one, bysinging her to a movie contract. Before long, word was out thatDiana was a personal favoriteguest of Johnny Carson's. Andtrade papers were kept busy talk-ing it up about the girl from War-burton, Australia who was ap-pearing at the Johnson's Ranch,in Texas ... as well as in otherfabulous niches of the world.

Today, after taking time outto adjust to her new married life,Diana is back at 'urn ... strongerthan ever! She sings "country"this time. And hubby, TomEwen, as personal manager and

producer, is a very much a partof her entertainment world. To-gether, they seem to have themusical world on a string! Thatworld, as you may already know, revolves around Tree Music Pub-lishing's exec, Buddy Killen. Kil-len ... a music man in a musicman's town ... is the guy whogave Diana her first chance tosing country, via a recording con-tract with Dial Records. In shortorder, she recorded "Lock, Stockand Teardrops" ... her initial ef-fort in country music recording. Now, as everyone knows, the re-sult of this record came across ina mighty smooth -'n -satisfyingmanner, and it gave the world anopportunity to realize that Aus-tralia's First Lady of Lyric hadmade Roger Miller's old hit hap-pen one more time.

Th e recording of "Lock, Stockand Teardrops" also gave DianaTrask the chance to do some-thing she really wanted to do.Diana sincerely loves countrymusic. She has feeling for it. Andshe believes that the day hascome for her to become a part ofit. For Diana Trask is the kind ofa gal who takes things one at atime. Her belief is, that the timehas come for her opportunitywith country music, via TreeMusic Publishing Company andBuddy Killen. She also intends todo the most with it. Because,Diana is one who realizes thatnone of us ever get a secondchance to re -do our lives.Diana's husband hails from Amer-ica. Diana is, of course, fromAustralia. They've both just re-cently returned from Europe.Furthermore, you can see Diana, with her husband, almost anytime in Nashville, Tennessee. So,where's home? We're not sure!

However, the one thing we arepositive of is that the addition ofDiana Trask to country musicbrings something so special to theindustry ... that the charm of itall could very well out -live Mo-ther Goose!

Here she is ... about to give itthe ole one-two, scubbie-doo,Trask treatment!

He's young; he's had a Num-ber 1 hit on both country andpop charts; his songs have beenrecorded by Eddy Arnold,Floyd Cramer, Waylon Jennings,Don Bowman, Glen Campbell,Ben Colder and Homer andJethro.

His name is John Hartfordand he's the new breed ofcountry singer.

Country music performershave never been afraid to looklife in the face, call a spade aspade and write songs aboutwhat they see. But those visionshave not always kept up withthe changes taking place in theway we go about our day-to-daylives. A lot of us want to stayin the good old days whilehistory moves ahead anyway.

John Hartford is one of a num-ber of singer/writers who arewriting about what is happeningnow.

And this is not - decidedlynot - protest material. It's lovesongs. Because love songs are agood part - maybe the bestpart - of country music.

To try and figure out how hegot to where he is, we have togo back to his birthplace, St.Louis, where, under the influ-ence of old-time fiddlers andbanjo pickers, young John Hart-ford fiddled for weekend highschool square dances. "I didn'tknow it was folk music until Igot to college," he states, "be-cause there wasn't much of iton the radio."

He's been playing banjo - his

favorite, although he's prettygood on the guitar - since age14. He had a go at a degree inart at Washington University, and has also been a deckhand, asign painter, a radio announcer, and a commercial artist. Butever since he formed his owngroup in high school, The Sour -wood Mountain Three, singingand writing songs has been hisstrongest interest.

Some songs take a few minutesto write, some take hours oreven months. He puts them ontape, and, when he plays themthe next day, finds out if theideas are listenable.

Since starring on the GlenCampbell Summer Show, Johnhas become interested in thecontemporary mixture of poli-tics and performing. Probablybecause of his contact with thatrising political figure, PatPaulsen. "More and morepeople," says John, "are becom-ing interested in trying to behonest about things." Kiddingpolitics, he thinks, is one of theways.

In 1966 John was brought byChuck Glaser to the attentionof RCA's Chet Atkins and Fel-ton Jarvis, who signed him toan exclusive recording contract. In 1967 he was awarded aGrammy by the National Asso-ciation of Recording Arts andSciences for the Best Countryand Western Song of that year.It was, of course, "Gentle OnMy Mind."

By his own statement - andwho better to heed than thewriter himself - the song isabout love without guilty feel-ings, one of the strongestthemes in the history ofcountry music. It says, in effect,

maybe you'll remember me andmaybe I'll think about you, butI'm thinkin' it's better furtherdown the road. The urge to seewhat's over the hill, in spite ofloved ones and a chance to set-tle down, is a feeling repre-sented in many a countryclassic. It is part of the traditionin "Remember Me," by T.Texas Tyler; in "I'm Movin'On" by Hank Snow, and inmany of Jimmie Rodgers' bestblue yodels.

Now, to this illustrious listwe can add a contemporarycountry classic by a young manon the way to the top: JohnHartford.

Van Trevor's Private Utopia

The Nashville Italian Street Festival was much funfor two newly-weds Karin and Van enjoyed thefood and music.

Music City's brightest and freshest newly-weds,Van and Karin Trevor, have found that enchantedplace each of us hopes someday to reach. A pri-vate Utopia where Life is Love and Love is won-derful!

A sparkling love that only newly-weds share. Alove and life that covers the small unimportantthings to others, but to the people in love, ithas a message all its own ... like a giggle over amorning cup of coffee ... having a new toy

poodle with no name ... a Siamese kitten named"Zodiac" ... a parakeet named "Pepe" ... and cut-ting a piano in two for furniture.

This glorious whirlwind started for the Trevor'sAugust 17th, at their elaborate New England wed-ding in Plainfield, Conn., where they exchangedtheir "I Do's" before 500 guests. A dinner for100 invited guests feted the newly-weds prior totheir Grand March and the reception.

The whirlwind of happiness gained momentum

"?llama don't 'flow no guitar playin' in the kit-chen, son!" The rolling pin is used in jest byKarin, but Van gets the point.

The other half of the piano makes a beautifulcoffee table. Johnny Dollar and Van put thefinishing touches on it.

on their honeymoon in New Mexico and isclimbing toward a towering pinnacle of bliss attheir new home in Nashville.

The popular American recording artist met hislovely bride, the former Karin Sagner, three yearsago at a dance where he was performing. It waslove from the first moment, but marriage had towait until Van was more established as an artist.

Those three years of waiting were broken downwith happy periods of refinishing old furniturefor their new future home.

Van has bought old furniture through the yearswhile on road tours. Each time Van returned, there was a surprise for Karin! She almostfainted when Van returned home one day with acomplete piano in his car. The piano had beendismantled and was in parts and pieces!

Van made a beautiful coffee table out of halfof the piano and used the keyboard and fronthalf of the remainder to make a planter for theirnew living room.

People attending the Trevor's wedding includeddisc jockeys, fans, friends, family and music per-sonalities. Dick Heard, Van's personal manager, was best man and songstress Lynda Kay Lance

was a bride's maid. Joe Taylor, president of JoeTaylor Artist Agency and Van's booking agent, flew to Plainfield for the wedding and ended updriving Van's car full of wedding gifts back toNashville.

Van and Karin left the ceremony for NewMexico where he was working a week's engage-ment at a club. Later, they took a real honey-moon.

Van is one of country music's newest singingsensations. He recently signed an exclusive record-ing contract with American Records. Since he be-gan recording, Van has had an unbroken string ofhits that carried him high up the national best-seller charts.

Also a successful songwriter, Van has writtenmany hits.

Gentleman Van is riding high with his careerzooming up the ladder of success, a beautifulbride, a lovely new home, and friends whograciously warmed their home with an old-fashioned "pounding" (house- warming party, youcity slickers!).

For the young Van Trevor's it's certainlyUtopia, indeed!

Johnny Dollar likes the idea of half -a -piano. Karinattempts to play while Van grins with the knowl-edge that not one sound will come out. It's aTrevor -designed planter in their living room!

Here's the man who signs those autographs "Jack Reno"!

I knew Jack Reno when othersdidn't.

I knew him again, when peopleknew his voice ... but not hisname.

And I knew him later, whenfans flocked to his side ... tohear and see what make JackReno tick.

I knew him when he was JackReno from Iowa.

And I know him as he istoday . . . from MusicRow ... but still JACK RENO.

The first time I met -up withJack Reno was in Mobridge,South Dakota. It was in the early50's, and he was slippin' aroundfrom stage to stage with one ofthe Grand Ole Opry PackageShows. I was only 14 at thetime, and certainly no Ted Mackout scouting for talent ... butwhen I heard this young man forthe first time, as he socked -it -to asong called "Kansas City", it flatmade me stop to scratch myhead ... and I wasn't lookin' fordandruff, either!

JACK RENO was just what Iwanted ... but not very much! Imean, what is a high school kids'poze to do with a singer she'sheard for the first time, whomshe thinks is good enuff for the

"Big Cheese" league? I wanted tohelp, naturally ... but how? Andthen, the thought suddenlystruck me that if he was alreadywhere he was, he didn't actuallyneed any assistance from thelocal farmer's daughter! So, I didthe next best thing ... a logicalmove for any teen-age girl. I

went home and listened to himon the radio. Jack had a coupleof "live" shows every day onWNAX in Yankton, SouthDakota, that I tuned -in as sure assun -rise that day. I rememberhim singing a novelty song,"Bessie The Heifer"; and WebbPierce's old hit of "It's Been Solong" was always one of my re-quest favorites. I finally began ac-cepting the fact that there wasn'tmuch I could do about the newvoice I had discovered. People areall too quick to ignore the adviceof 15 -year -old talent judges! I

wasn't supposed to know aboutsuch stuff. I didn't have any pro-fessional experience. Well, phooie! I never laid an egg, either ... but that doesn't keepme from recognizing a rottenone!

meanwhile, back at theranch ... there was my own lifeto think about. I studied radio-

televison, and entered some ex-citing years of trying and cryingin the field of broadcasting.

Throughout my career, Reno'sname was mentioned severaltimes ... and I assure you, itwasn't all in the same breath!First, through trade talk, I heardthat he had become a networkregular on the ABC-TV "OzarkJubilee", hosted by Red Foley.Later, I came in contact withsome of his records, and was de-lighted to find the WLS charts re-porting his first nationwide hit of"Blue" in the' 1 positionthroughout the Chicago area.Since that time, I have learnedthat same record sold over half amillion copies.

Reno's name turned up againin connection with such radiostations as KWNT, Davenport,Iowa; KCKN, Kansas City,Kansas; and KLLL, Lubbock,Texas ... where he gained a greatdeal of recognition through re-spective DJ posts.

I did not actually meet JackReno again until we accidentlywent to work for the same radiostation ... which caught both ofus in a storm of surprise thatcouldn't be compared to any-thing short of hurricane Edna!

Proof of the popularity polls isevidenced here as Reno accepts apersonal plaque from PeoriaMayor, Robert Lehnhausen, awarded to him in honor of be-ing nominated Movie MirrorMagazine's "DJ STAR OF THEYEAR".

A man and his music ... shownon duty at WXCL, Peoria, h i-nois.

the station was WXCL ... a re-cent country convert, at thattime ... in Peoria, Illinois.

Jack was doing a great job asDJ and Music Director. But hehadn't been out of the Armyvery long, and was just takingtime to get his feet back on civil-ian ground. He didn't seem tohave a large amount of confi-dence concerning his career as asinger, and wasn't working showsas often as I knew he should forthe talent he had to offer. I triedto convince him that he was theartist I believed he was ... thathe was the talent I believed hehad. So, "sing" ... I said! Getsome bookings! Look busy!think big! Hold out for the con-tract that pays!

I began to know Jack as a per-sonal friend. I began to see hewas a rare, honest, hard-workingindividual. And again, slowly, Ibegan to see him take the reinsas he rode deeper and deeper in-to the world of country music. Ibegan to see him strive for con-stant contact with the so-called"wheels" of C/W music... always hoping for that bigbreak. It never happened. But,what I did see happen was thenervous look of people whoworked with him ... his competi-tion ... they saw potential inhim and altho they never ad-mitted it, they worried aboutwhat it meant to them.

When I answered a call of thecountry to leave WXCL, andcome to Nashville, Tennessee asan employee of Music City USA,I promised Jack Reno that Iwould continue our search for acontract ... a chance .. an op-portunity. And I don't mind ad-mitting, at first it was like aworld o f bats ... everythingseemed all UPSIDE-DOWN! Ittook some waiting ... some do-ing ... some set -backs ... somebig Excedrin headaches. Then, presto! Somebody rubbed theright lamp ... and Buddy Killenentered the picture.

32

Page 35: SCOFF -ROSE STORY POSTER INSI! · 2019-07-17 · Gibson Strings the workingman's string Grady Martin Johnny Rivers Tony Mottola 41111 Johnny Smith PHOIIIESI STAN HITCHCOCK Born in

Killen, at Tree Music Publish -mg Company, is the man whowas directly responsible for rec-ognizing the potential in Reno... through a radio jingle, whichI had written and Reno had re-corded. The commercial caughtthe attention of various Musiccity officials, and needless tosay, Reno definitely believes "Itpays to advertise!"

Reno was immediately awardedwith a contract for Jab Records.A national hit followed. It wasa beauty of a ballad, titled "Re-peat After Me", and it madeits mark on Top Ten CountryCharts, nationwide. Then, came"How Sweet It is" and an album, entitled "Meet Jack Reno". 1968was definitely beginning to takeon a rosy color for Reno.

The Ryman Auditorium wasanother scene of still more suc-cess for Reno this year, when hemade his debut appearance onthe Grand Ole Opry ... rockingrafters with a double encore!

As a disc jockey, Reno wasnot getting left in the dust, either! Loyal Peoria fans placedhim in the # 1 Pulsed -rated posi-tion I at WXCL and further em-phasis was put on his dee jayvalue, when Movie Mirror Maga-zine named him "DJ Star of theYear".

So, it's not just the folks backin Jack's hometown of Bloom-field, Iowa who are realizing thatReno's holding his own thesedays ... and, of course, this olegirl's always right in there holler-ing "I TOLD' JA SO!"

Personally, I'm mighty proudto say I have known JackReno ... and about JackReno ... since way back on asummer's night in South Dakota.Furthermore, I can't deny that Iwas riding my own high horse ofpride again recently ... elated toadmit that I knew Jack Renoonce more, when he was thetalked -about talent on MusicRow, recording his first single forDot Records It was a session

wherein a big -big -big- baritonevoice sold a song to the Nth de-gree ... and one where the careand craftiness of A & R Pro-ducer, Buddy Killen, was evidentin every final note of a sure-firehit, titled "I WANT ONE".

Yes, I knew Jack Reno, yester-day ... when others didn't. AndI'll know him tomorrow, too .. .I'm confident of that ... 'causeJack's the kind of a guy whodoesn't ever forget the folks whohave faith in him. But, be it per-sonal glory, or professional pom-posity, I'm just very glad to say Ido remember ole What's- His -Facewhen. Glad to know that nice guysDON'T ALWAYS finish last.

... a man called Reno ... and asong called "I WANT ONE". Putthem all together, they spell"HIT" for Dot Records!

A big manvoice ... Jackgrins" for theIllinois.

ACUFF IS TODAY!From a fledging two -man organization born in thehard years of World War II, Acuff -Rose has becomethe biggest music -publishing, booking agency, andrecording comples in "Music City, U.S.A.". Thefirm has maintained its own office in London formore than a decade, and in recent years has steadilyexpanded its overseas affiliations in publishing aswell as recording activities. The London office alsoincorporates a talent agency representing the over-seas interests of Acuff -Rose Artists Corp.

Today Acuff -Rose is strongly based at all levelsof the music business, and its influence reachesaround the world. Through one or more of its affil-iated companies, it represents some of the musicworld's best talent, and controls some of its mostvaluable song catalogs. It is one of the very fewcomplete -line publishing companies encompassing allphases of the music business. While many musicpublishing companies today are simply holding com-panies for copyrights, Acuff -Rose still prints sheetmusic and employs a special staff to promote theproduct of its songwriters and its artists.

Through the years, Acuff -Rose has made musicalhistory. They were the first music publishing com-pany in Nashville, first to record in Nashville, firstto record the "Nashville Sound", first Nashville publisher to have its own recording studio, first Nash-ville country music firm to get "pop" hits, firstNashville publisher to receive a "pop" award, firstpublisher to receive eight "pop" awards in one year, first Nashville publisher to have its own educationalpublishing operation, first Nashville publisher to

have a promotion department, first Nashville pub-lisher to have a foreign booking agency, first Nash-ville publisher to record foreign artists, first Nash-ville publisher to have a world-wide operation,Published first song to achieve #1 rank in everycountry of civilized world, provided three of thefirst four members of the Country Music Hall ofFame (Tex Ritter became a fourth later), Fred Rosewas the first to be elected "Country Music Man ofthe Year", Fred and Wesley Rose were first father -son combination to be elected "Country Music Manof the Year", they were first founder of the Coun-try Music Association, first Nashville publisher re-presented on board of National Music Publishers As-sociation, and the first Nashville publisherrepresented on board of ASCAP.

Acuff -Rose is the result of a business partnershipbetween two of the most unusual talents the enter-tainment world has ever produced. When Fred Rose,a one-time piano player for Paul Witeman, came toNashville in the early 40's, he had already achievedmajor success as a song writer, with such "pop" hitsas "Deed I Do", "Honest and Truly", and "RedHot Mama" (which he wrote for Sophie Tucker),and a string of legendary country-and-western titlesincluding "Tears on My Pillow", `Be Honest WithMe", "Yesterday's Roses", and "Tweedle O'Twill"which he wrote for Gene Autry.

Rose got a job singing on Radio Station WSM,where he got to know Roy Acuff, who was alreadybeing called the "King of Country Music". A strongbond grew between the two men, and Acuff sug-gested that they form a music publishing business

34

together. The firm of Acuff -Rose opened for busi-ness in 1943, in a one -room office at 220 CapitolBoulevard, and it immediately came up with a pairof hits written by Rose, "Fire -ball Mail" and "Pinsand Needles". Acuff recorded them, and then wrotea hit of his own, "Precious Jewels" for good mea-sure.

Fred Rose's son, Wesley, came to Nashville tovisit his father in 1945. An accountant with Stan-dard Oil Company, Wesley asked to see the Acuff -Rose books. He discovered that they didn't balance. They never had. When he pointed this out to hisfather, Fred invited him to join the company andtake over its management, which he did.

Fred Rose died in 1954, two years after thedeath of Hank Williams, who turned out more than100 songs for Acuff -Rose during a five-year period. These losses posed two major management problemsfor Wesley, who assumed the Acuff -Rose presi-dency. However, Wesley had already shown greatpromise as an innovative music executive, and hissolutions to the problems of filling his father's shoesas a producer and "A & R" man, and of replacingthe phenomenal songwriting output of Hank Wil-liams, set the company on a new course which car-ried it through its major growth and brought it toits present eminence.

The new home of Acuff -Rose was an effort tocatch up with corporate housing needs long de-ferred. It was also an attempt to comment architec-turally on the stature and the vitality of the musicbusiness in Nashville, and to make an esthetic con-tribution to the community.

A total of nearly 24,000 square feet of floor areais encompassed in the entire structure. Included inthe main two-story building are a large general of-fice area, several individual offices, an executive of-fice area, and two large conference rooms. The ex -

ecutive offices and conference rooms are completelysound -proofed.

The one-story wing to the north houses the ship-ping, storage, and darkroom operations, in additionto a complete print shop and a modern four -trackrecording studio with rehearsal rooms and cuttingrooms.

The facade of the building incorporates a designconcept new to the Nashville area. It features threelarge areas of backlighted stone tracery, cantileveredoff the black granite wall of the building itself. Themain entrance -way, screened with gold anodizedaluminum, repeats the design of the tracery.

Naturally the growth of the firm has not onlybeen the result of the efforts by the founders andpresent operators. It also, to a great measure, hasbeen the result of the production of the great song-writers whose capabilities were foreseen by the menwho run the business. Those writers include thename of Fred Rose, Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, MelForee, Leon Payne, Pee Wee King and Redd Ste-wart, Ira and Charlie Louvin, Martha Carson, Billand Cliff Carlisle, Hy Heath, Marty Robbins,Johnnie and Jack, Felice and Boudleaux Bryant,Don Gibson, Don and Phil Everly, Roy Orbison,John D. Loudermilk, Joe Melson, The Blackwells,Wilma Lee and Stony Cooper, Ernie Ashworth, DonFolger, Mickey Newbury, Stu Phillips and JimmieWork.

Anytime a visitor to Music City USA wants tosee a top production layout or gather in a scene ofreal beauty or seek the best in results, he need onlystop at the new home of Acuff -Rose which housesthe following allied firms: Acuff -Rose Publications,Inc., Acuff -Rose Sales, Inc., Fred Rose Music, Inc.,Milene Music, Inc., Windward Side Music, Acuff -Rose Artists Corporation, Hickory Records, Inc.,and TRX Records.

The ultimate realization of country/rock can befound on the Byrds' new album Sweetheart Of TheRodeo (Col 9670). Originally planned as a two -recordset to be titled "Hickory Wind," it wound up as asingle album with that song imbedded in it. Thewhole session has a good, driving, down-home sound."I Am A Pilgrim" is about the best version of thatsong since the historic recording by Merle Travis. Andfor anybody who dislikes the rock generation (usuallywithout stopping to think about it at all) "The Chris-tian Life" should be listened to closely. The sinceritybehind the vocal cannot be disputed, and will givecountry fans a chance to exercise Christian beliefsand believe. Acceptance of the Byrds as human beingsand good musicians is right in line with His bestteachings. "You're Still On My Mind" is pure Merle

Haggard modern, and "Pretty Boy Floyd" approachesthe old timey sound on guitar and steel.

Gram Parsons, formerly of the International Sub-marine Band, is on guitar, and may have had a lot todo with the Byrds' new country orientation. JohnHartford is gentle on guitar and banjo for this session, and thrilling (that's the only word) steel guitar is pro-vided by Lloyd Green and Jaydee Maness. The otherregular members of the Byrds are the original-andstill one of the best guitarists anywhere-RogerMcGuinn, and Chris Hillman on drums.

The Byrds are the fourth well-known folk name totry the Nashville ambience: Dylan, Buffy Saint -Marie,Ian & Sylvia-it is certain the trend has just begun.Wouldn't it be fascinating if it eventually reverseditself and Ernest Tubb recorded a rock album?

PROIIIESI

Jimmie Rodgers - Old TimerAlthough he passed away at the early age of 35, thememory of his music echoes across the airwaves ofour nation's radio stations via the voices of count-less singers who have been inspired by that frailfigure of a young brakeman -singer named JimmieRodgers.

Born September 8, 1897 in the railroad town ofMeridian, Mississippi, James Charles Rodgers was theson of a section foreman on the Mobile & OhioRailroad. Riding in engine cabs and on boxcars wasa childhood delight to little Jimmie and at the ageof 14 he became a railroad man himself.

In the early stages of his career, Jimmie came toknow the rough and rowdy ballads of the trainmen.Negroes on the line taught him how to pick guitarand banjo, etc. Later, when he became a brakeman, some of his railroad buddies would take over hisduties, so Jimmie could be free to entertain them.

It was in the fall of 1924, when Jimmie firstcontracted TB, the disease which was to eventuallytake his life. Jimmie was immediately forced to giveup his railroad job and all strenuous work.

Due to his health, a career in music was Jimmie'sbest bet. However, his big break did not come tillAugust 1927, when he cut his first two singles forRCA, "Sleep Baby Sleep" and "Soldier's Sweet-heart". From that time on, Jimmie's fame soared.

Still weak from another TB attack, Jimmie wentto New York in the Spring of 1933, in an effort torecord twenty-four songs for RCA Victor. But, hiscondition forced him to use a cot to rest on in therecording studio, and he could only complete twelvesongs, with the final one being "Years Ago". Twodays later Jimmie Rodgers was a musical memory, leaving behind a powerful influence on the world ofmusic in which he had played such a big part.

NEW

FACESWhen you can find a young man who sings country"like a bird" ... it seems only fittin-n-proper thathe should record on the CANARY label! And that, folks, is exactly the case with countrypolitanclimber, Durwood Erwin.

To the fan who's already familiar with thismodern country song stylist, it's an accepted factthat he's neck -and -neck competition on current listsof promising entertainers ... with promising futures... rising up -up -and -away to fame before too manymoons!

Durwood has three singles and one album to hiscredit, at the present; but there's no doubt ... nowhere, no how, neighbor ... that the pickin-n-grinnin' is not over for eager entertainer, Erwin. There's no question that this man of music isdestined to become one of America's favorites. Be-cause, Durwood Erwin is a stylist. And it is thatstyle of delivery that will continue to earn him thesolid following of fans, which has already reachedinternational proportions, and is ever-increasing.

Emerald Record Company located in Belfast,North Ireland, was the first in a foreign processionof countries to recognize Durwood's artist ability;and they have pressed his songs on their label forsale and distribution abroad since the time of hisfirst single release, "So Much Too Much" b/w "YouBroke My Heart." Negotiations are currently underway with South Africa, South America, and Europefor additional distribution, as a result of his firstCanary Album release, "Durwood Erwin Sings Mod'N' Country".

Opinions bearing out the fact that "Durwood'sDay Is Coming" carries further confirmationthrough direct response from Radio Veronica, theBBC, and CSSR in Prague, Czechoslovakia, wherehis songs have been aired as a product of the

Durwood ErwinEmerald Recording Company.

Durwood does all of his recording in Nashville,Tennessee through a superbly balanced and wellproduced session of strings, piano, drum and guitar,as well as vocal backing by the "Nashville Sounds",formerly known as the "Anita Kerr Singers". Dur-wood is due to cut a new single this fall, withsession slated for Fred Foster Studios, located inthe midst of Music City USA.

Durwood Erwin is basically a country boy ... aKentucky country boy ... who fell in love with thecity of San Francisco! And here we go again, withan old, but true case, of being able to take the boyout of the country ... but not being able to takethe country out of the boy! Durwood never lost hisliking ... his faith ... his future dreams for countrymusic.

Born on a farm in Rumsey, Kentucky, Durwoodcasually courted his career of singing during a stintwith Unc's U.S. Navy. After his discharge, he estab-lished residence on the West Coast, where he con-tinued his efforts in the entertainment world. Andit was in that particular part of the world whereDurwood met Mrs. Muriel Less ... who showed herbelief in the boy from Kentucky ... who enthusias-tically encouraged him ... and who, today, is hispersonal Manager. Durwood now resides in PaloAlto, California.

A sincere showman, Durwood has appeared onvarious radio and TV stations as a one-man show, inaddition to having performed with several of theOpry stars. He's a natural who knows what to dowith a guitar ... what to sing ... and how to singit. He's a good-lookin guy. He's single. He's 5 -feet,9 -inches tall. He's Durwood Erwin.
