2The hyperbolic paraboloid(not to be confused with a
hyperboloid) is a doubly ruled surface shaped like a saddle. In
a suitable coordinate system, a hyperbolic paraboloid can be
represented by the equation
For c>0, this is a hyperbolic paraboloid that opens up along the x-
axis and down along the y-axis (i.e., the parabola in the plane
x=0 opens upward and the parabola in the plane y=0 opensdownward).
How do we know this better?

The Repository for Germinal Choice was a sperm
bank that existed from from 1980 to 1999. It is
commonly believed to have accepted only donations
fromX, although in fact it accepted donations fromnon-X, also. The first baby conceived from the
project was a girl born on April 19, 1982. Founded by
Robert Klark Graham, the repository was dubbed the
"X sperm bank" by media reports at the time. Theonly contributor who became known publicly wasY,
X recipient in physics. What did this inspire in pop

Gary Dean Anderson (born 1947) is an influential graphic
designer and architect. He is most well known as the designer
of the X, one of the most readily recognisable logos in the
world. His design for a symbol to embody the concept of Y
has been compared to iconic trademarks such as those for
Coca-Cola and Nike.It has been called one of Americas most
important design icons,it is one of the most recognizable
graphic symbols in the world and has helped to encourage
global Y. In some countries, such as the UK, the symbolcarries such implicit meaning that it requires government
permission to be used. What it iiis?

The nameXis a playful allusion to the event's origins, with
reference to the programmer slang term, foobar: X arose as an
open-to-the-public alternative to Foo Camp, which is an
annual invitation-only (for Friends of O'Reilly) participant-
driven conference.
The first X was held in Palo Alto, California, from August 1921,
2005, in the offices of Socialtext. It was organized in less than
one week, from concept to event, with 200 attendees. Since
then, Xs have been held in over 350 cities around the world, inNorth America, South America, Africa, Europe, the Middle
East, Australasia and Asia.(recently held in bangalore as well)

7 Excerpts from an article on physOrg.com
Motivated by the desire to determine the simplest 3-D structure that could
take advantage of mechanical instability to collapse reversibly, a group of
engineers at MIT and Harvard University were stymieduntil one of
them happened across a collapsible, spherical toy that resembled the
structures they'd been exploring, but with a complex layout of 26 solid
moving elements and 48 rotating hinges.
This is the "XY," a hollow, spherical object made of soft rubber containingno moving parts, but fashioned with 24 carefully spaced dimples. When the
air is sucked out with a syringe, the thin ligaments forming columns
between lateral dimples collapse.
The researchers named their new structure for its use of Xing and its
resemblance to buckyballs, spherical all-carbon molecules whose name wasinspired by the geodesic domes created by architect-inventor Buckminster
Fuller.
XY is the first morphable structure to incorporate Xing as a desirable
engineering design element. The Xing process induces folding in portions
of the spheresimilar to the way paper folds in origami.

The X was invented by Walter and Tom Davies in Llanelli,
Wales in 1904. At the time motor cars were made without
X.Their company, Y Iron Mongers had agents distributing the
U.S.A., Brussels, Paris, and Italy. The word "Y" is sometimes
used interchangeably in countries that were once part of the
British Empire such as Bangladesh, India, and Malta.
The first to equip cars with such an assembly were the Ramblers
made by Thomas B. Jeffery Company. and yeah Y is kinda X's
synonym.

______________was produced first in 1878 by Fahlberg, a chemist working
on coal tar derivatives in Remsen's laboratory at the Johns Hopkins
University. The sweet taste of__________ was discovered when Fahlberg
noticed a sweet taste on his hand one evening, and connected this with the
compound that he had been working on that day. Fahlberg and Remsen
published articles on benzoic sulfimide in 1879 and 1880. In 1884, now
working on his own in New York City, Fahlberg applied for patents in
several countries, describing methods of producing this substance that he
named _________. Fahlberg would soon grow wealthy, while Remsen
merely grew irate, believing that he deserved credit for substances
produced in his laboratory. On the matter, Remsen commented, "Fahlbergis a scoundrel. It nauseates me to hear my name mentioned in the same
breath with him."

In Japan, the western part of the country (Kyoto andwest) uses 60 Hz and the eastern part (Tokyo and east)uses 50 Hz. This originates in the first purchases ofgenerators from AEG in 1895, installed for Tokyo, and
General Electric in 1896, installed in Osaka. Theboundary between the two regions contains four back-to-back HVDC substations which convert the frequency;these are Shin Shinano, Sakuma Dam, Minami-
Fukumitsu, and the Higashi-Shimizu FrequencyConverter

The _________ is shown without the tail and in a symmetrical diamond form.
The geometry of diamond shaped kite with its right-hand rule can also be
viewed as a stylized form of the Wheatstone bridge. It has been said that
this bridge with its galvanometer also depicts the earliest observation of
electrical phenomena by Thales, and the source of the word electricity. The
bridge is used as a precise measurement tool. Folklore surrounding the
Wheatstone bridge reminds us that the linemen of yesteryear used it to
predict the location of a break in a telegraph line to within the distance
between two poles. And further, they would often bet coffee on which pole
the break was closest. In a similar manner the kite, represents the kite used
by Benjamin Franklin when he discovered electricity in lightning.

18In 1946, after many years of endeavour, Norman, Hymie and Maxwell Goldberg
finally invent the first air-conditioning unit that can be fitted inside a car. So
thrilled and confident are these three brothers that they decide to sell it tothe largest car manufacturer in the world Ford
They install their only working unit in one of their cars and choosing a hot day, drive to Fords Head Office in Detroit. On arrival, they ask to see Henry Ford
himself, but as they dont have an appointment, they have to use all their
charm to persuade his secretary to help them. Within minutes, shes telling
Mr Ford that sitting in her office are three well dressed gentlemen with amost exciting invention that will help sell more Ford cars.
Henry Ford immediately asks them to join him in his office. But they refuse, asking him instead to go with them to the car park to see their invention. Heagrees and when they reach the Goldbergs car, all four get in. As its now
very hot outside, the Goldbergs turn on their air-conditioning unit. Almostimmediately the car begins to cool down. Henry Ford is very excited andasks if they have patented their invention which they are pleased toconfirm. So he invites them back to his office for some discussion.

One hour later, the Goldbergs are offered $3million for their invention. But theyrefuse. They not only want $5million but they also desire recognition byhaving a label on every one of their units saying, A Goldberg Air-Conditioning unit.
But Henry Ford says that there is no way he is going to put the nameGoldberg on millions of his Ford cars (everyone in America knows that he
is more than a little bit anti-Semitic.) So they go back to haggling andeventually reach an agreement for the product. The offer now is $4.5millionplus the display in each car of something related to the three brothers.
What was named after them? (remember this is just a myth)

20In his patent application of February 6, 1959, W described his
new device as a body of semiconductor material ... whereinall the components of the electronic circuit are completely
integrated. W won the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics for the
invention..W's work was named an IEEE Milestone in 2009.
X also came up with his own idea of an integrated circuit half a
year later than W. His chip solved many practical problems
that W's had not. Produced at Fairchild Semiconductor, it was
made of silicon, whereas X's chip was made of germanium.

22The design posted by X on the Internet spread like wildfire in cyberspace in
october 2011.It drew hundreds of thousands of posts, and commemorativecaps and T-shirts peddled on eBay featured his design.
X, 19, said he was not the first to come up with the design after commentssurfaced on Twitter that a U.K.-based designer, known as Raid71 on the web, created the original design in May.
X, a student at Hong Kong's Polytechnic University School of Design, acknowledged he was not the original creator of the design but said he did not
"rip off" the UK designer.
He went on to say,
"I still arrived at the solution on my own, and my conscience is still clear, but I'mmore than happy to acknowledge the fact that somebody did it before me,"
Raid71's design differed from X's only in dimension and proportion.

24X usually results in quadriplegia and the inability to speak in otherwise
cognitively intact individuals. Those with X may be able to communicate
with others through coded messages by blinking or moving their eyes, which are often not affected by the paralysis. The symptoms are similar tothose of sleep paralysis. Patients who have X are conscious and aware withno loss of cognitive function. They can sometimes retain proprioception andsensation throughout their body. Some patients may have the ability tomove certain facial muscles, most often some or all of the extraocular eye
muscles. Individuals with X lack coordination between breathing and voice. This restricts them from producing voluntary sounds, even though the vocalcords themselves are not paralysed.

25He worked in Copenhagen at the Carlsberg Laboratory, associated withCarlsberg
Brewery, where he was head of the Chemistry departmentfrom 1876 to 1900.
He was given the job to determine the amount of protein in the grain used in the maltindustry. Less protein meant more beer. X found the answer was in developing a
technique to determine nitrogen with accuracy but existing methods in analytical
chemistry related to proteins and biochemistry at the time were far from
accurate.
X method in analytical chemistry is a method for the quantitative determination of
nitrogen in chemical substances.

A software protection X is a small piece of hardware that plugs intoan electrical connector on a computer and serves as an electronic"key" for a piece of software; the program will run only when the X isplugged in. It is mainly used for the purpose of copy protection orauthentication of software to be used on that system.
Electrically, X mostly appear as two-interface security tokens withtransient data flow that does not interfere with other functions and apull communication that reads security data from the it. These areused by some proprietary vendors as a form of copy protection ordigital rights management, because it is generally harder to replicatea it than to copy the software it authenticates. Without the X, thesoftware may run only in a restricted mode, or not at all.
