Science Project:

How an earthquake occurs?

Ans: Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake. The spot underground where the rock breaks is called the focus of the earthquake. The place right above the focus (on top of the ground) is called the epicenter of the earthquake.

What is Seismograph?

Ans: Seismograph is an instrument that makes a record of seismic waves caused by an earthquake.

MAJOR EARTHQUAKES IN INDIA:

1. September 30, 1993: Occurred at Latur, Maharashtra. Magnitude of earthquake was 6.2 . Loss of lives of 9,748 people.

2. January 26, 2001: Occurred at Gujarat. Magnitude of earthquake was 7.7 . Loss of lives of 20,000 people.

3. December 26, 2004: Occurred at off west coast northern Sumatra India Sri Lanka Maldives. Magnitude of earthquake was 9.1 . Loss of lives of 283,106 people.

4. October 8, 2005: Occurred at Kashmir. Magnitude of earthquake was 7.6 . Loss of lives of 130,000 people.

EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE:

Loss of lives, destruction of property, landslides, floods, tsunamis, soil erosion.
