Upon arrival, head of international re- lations office Maria Teresa Calabro re- ceived the 70-member delegation of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states that was briefed on an art exhibition on Italian women. The delegation including male and female students listened to history of the four-de- cade-long headquarters and were apprised of the role of the Italian parliament in con- stitutional and political life, as well as its legislative and regulatory action. The commission was accompanied at the parliament by Kuwait’s Ambassador to Italy Sheikh Ali Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, UAE’s Ambassador Saqr Nasser Al-Rai- si, Qatar’s envoy Abdulaziz bin Ahmed Al Maliki Al Juhani and Oman’s Ambas- sador Ahmed bin Salim Ba Omar as well as representatives of the GCC youth com- mittee. The delegation, in the presence of these GCC ambassadors, held a fruitful meet- ing with a number of Italian MPs and of- ficials. During the meeting, Sheikh Ali Al- Khaled delivered a speech in which he expressed his gratitude to Italian Parlia- ment Speaker for creating an opportunity to GCC youth to cement and deepen ties with the Italian people. In a speech to open the 38th session of the Federation of Arab Scientific Research Coun- cils (FASRC), Al-Fares noted that the Arab world has long been a pioneer in scientific re- search, citing a golden era where Europe and the Western world lagged far behind. Moreover, the minister of edu- cation underscored the need to prioritize technological research in the Arab world, where spending on research merely amounts to 0.5 percent, adding that the two-day meeting allows representatives of Arab nations to exchange views on strategies to develop scientific research. Meanwhile, on Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), he described it as a bastion of tech- nological research, noting that KISR’s inception is a testament to the country’s cognizance of the importance of scientific research. In a speech of his own, Un- dersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Azhari Abdulbaqi said that scientific research is the cornerstone of human knowledge and a major indicator of global development. In a statement to the press on the sidelines of a panel discussion over the project, organized by the public relations department of the Ministry of Oil, engineer Ammad Safar said that the project which was launched in 2013, had only begun in earnest last month with a total energy of 10 megawatts per day. Moreover, he noted that the “Sedra 500” solar plant project is part of efforts to fulfill His High- ness the Amir’s plan of full use of renewable energy sources by the year 2030, adding energy gen- erated by the “Sedra 500” solar plant is used to supply around 27 oil wells. Through this project, Safar un- derscored that KOC aims to illus- trate its commitment to environ- mental conservation and efforts to reduce lethal carbon emissions for the good of humanity. Meanwhile, KOC energy con- sultant Dr. Raed Sharif spoke of the company’s propensity to un- dertake similar endeavors, most notably, plans to build a power station fueled by solar energy. On Kuwait’s readiness to em- brace full renewable energy use, he noted that the country possess- es a solar energy capacity of more than 2000 kilowatts per year, which is conducive to full-fledged use of solar energy. He also underscored the feasi- bility of renewable energy proj- ects in Kuwait, adding that the cost of such projects has dimin- ished in recent times.
