Scientific and Clinical Update in

Gynecologic OncologyAnnual Full Day Symposium

Program ObjectivesCancers related to women’s health are a major public health interest. The topics to be discussed have direct impact on patient management. The Gynecologic Oncology Symposium will feature discussions covering a full spectrum of gynecologic oncology care and research. The agenda presentations will cover more than the basics for the treatment of all gynecologic cancers. Through presentations and panel discussions, our nationally and internationally renowned guest faculty in the field of gynecologic oncology will provide substantial evidence for current best practices, as well as practical assessment and management tools that participants will be able to apply directly to their own practices.

Upon completion of this conference, attendees should be able to:1. Identify patients that will benefit from specific surgical techniques/procedures based on tumor pathology, stage of disease, condition of patient, and availability of technology and resources.

2. Review and recommend appropriate radiation treatment options for different/various types and stages of gynecologic malignancies.

3. Discuss the evidence that genomic features of cancer could be used to develop patient specific monitoring tools, in addition to potentially guiding therapy.

4. Review current treatment strategies for patients with newly diagnosed and recurrent carcinosarcomas, leiomyosarcomas, and other less common uterine sarcomas.

5. Discuss concepts of targeted therapy and review successes, failures and challenges associated with biologic and combined biologic/cytotoxic treatment regimens for endometrial cancers.

6. Review the emerging data that allows one to individualize therapy in advanced or recurrent cervical carcinoma.

7. Summarize standard and emerging therapeutic options for ovarian cancer and discuss their impact on patient outcomes.

8. Assess their individual practices in light of the information discussed during the course, and identify specific strategies to implement as part of a continuing improvement process for their practices.

Jefferson’s Kimmel Cancer CenterJefferson’s Kimmel Cancer Center (KCC), established in 1991, is one of a select group of facilities in the nation designated by the National Cancer Institute. Richard Pestell, MD, PhD, the Director of KCC, os a nationally renowned expert in oncology and endocrinology. There are approximately 135 members, which include physicians and scientists, dedicated to the development of novel approaches to cancer diagnosis and treatment. KCC has advanced patient care and clinical research in every medical specialty related to cancer.

The mission of the Center is to increase the survival and quality of life for patients by translating bench research into clinically available protocols. Research areas include studies in genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, structural biology, pharmacology, and immunology that focus on new modalities for cancer treatment and prevention. The coordinated efforts of the basic scientists and clinicians provide and important link to bring discoveries from bench to beside.
