13 May Sustainable development & water management- Hungary
Similar to other lakeside areas in Europe, Lake Balaton is an important development hub, but faces significant economic and environmental challenges. Through this conference, the Balaton region aimed to put the sustainable development of European lake regions on the political agenda of the EU.
13-14 May State-of-the-art of analytical methods for reliable detection of micro- and nanoplastics workshop
Microplastics (MPs) and possibly also nanoplastics (NPs) are widely diffused throughout the environment and concerns are growing that they may present a potential risk to the environment and human health via contamination of water, food, and air. There is a growing need for scientists and legislators to better understand this issue and in particular to have access to reliable information on the sources, presence, nature, and distribution of micro- and nanoplastic in different media and their potential effects. Unfortunately, the development of this knowledge base is being hindered, among others, by the absence of harmonised sampling/analytical procedures as well as a lack of quality assurance tools such as reference materials.
17
In order to close knowledge gaps, the EC JRC plans a series of workshops which will bring together regulators and experts in the field of microplastics with the aim of defining priority areas and the most effective ways to tackle them. This first workshop brought together experts in the analysis and detection of micro- and nanoplastics. Available methodologies were critically reviewed. Emphasis was placed on defining practical actions to improve data quality and inter-comparability by promoting harmonisation and future method development.
13-17 May The European Space Agency (ESA) Living Planet Symposium
This symposium focuses on the contribution of Earth Observation to science and society and how disruptive technologies and actors are changing the traditional landscape of Earth observation, which also creates new opportunities, interaction between the public and private sectors. The symposium was organised around four themes: Earth Sciences, Earth Observation Missions, Space 4.0 and Earth Observation, Advantages for a resilient society. The Summer School was specifically tailored for post-graduate students and early-career scientists working in the biosciences and focused on non-animal methods and technologies and the opportunities and challenges associated with their application in various fields such as regulatory toxicology and biomedical research.
17 May Science for Europe, Science for Me
A series of short and interesting presentations were presented on issues that concern us all, from climate change to the fight against terrorism. JRC scientists told visual stories about the science that protects EU citizens.
21-24 May JRC Summer School on Non-Animal Approaches in Science
The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), which runs the EU Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM), organised a JRC Summer School on "Non-Animal Approaches in Science: Challenges and Future Directions. The objective of the JRC Summer School was to share knowledge and experiences on the latest non-animal approaches used in research and testing, including in vitro methods and computer modeling. In addition, the intention was to explore the role of the Three R (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of Animal Experimentation) in science today through discussion and debate.
22 May Artificial intelligence - Belgium
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in all sectors of society. This event provided an overview of the challenges and opportunities for policy makers in the field, specifically applied in the Belgian context.
27-30 May 27th EU Biomass Conference and Exhibition
The conference program included more than 800 first-rate contributions received with abstracts from more than 3,300 authors and co-authors from 68 countries. Submitted abstracts were noted and selected by
18
scientific and industrial committees of institutional and industrial research organisations under the chairmanship of the Joint Research Center of the European Commission.
28-29 May 172nd European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE) Seminar
The 172nd Seminar of the European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE) was aimed to reinforce at strengthening the environmental and climate ambition of the EU's agricultural sector, which is at the center of the European Commission's latest proposal on the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The theme of the seminar were the policy and research implications of these increased environmental and climate ambitions. The Agriculture and Rural Development Department of the Commission (DG AGRI) and the Joint Research Center (JRC) supported the European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE) in organising this seminar.
