L.I To know the Moon Phases and the order of the cycle.

Has anyone seen the different shapes of the Moon? What do u think causes this?

We call this changing of shape a PHASE.

The phase of the Moon depends on where it is in relation to the Sun and Earth. As the Moon makes its way around the Earth, we see the bright parts of the Moon's surface at different angles. These are called "phases" of the Moon.

What makes the Moon look like its lit up?The moon looks like its lit up because it reflects the light from the Sun. The

part of the moon facing the Sun is lit up. The part facing away from the sun is in darkness.

A single Moon phase is called a Cycle and this starts with the New Moon, it takes 28 days for the moon to complete its cycle.

L.I To know the Moon Phases and the order of the cycle.

• New Moon – The new moon is seen when the moon and the sun

are on the same side of Earth. The moon is in between the sun and the Earth. We can only see the side which is not lit, so the moon is dark. We can’t see a New Moon because the lit side is facing directly away from the Earth. The moon is up through out the day, and down through out the night, this is the reason we can not see the moon during this phase.

• Waxing Crescent MoonThe crescent moon is a thin crescent moon. During

this phase, part of the Moon is beginning to show. This slivery crescent can be seen each evening for a few minutes just after sunset. We say that the Moon is "waxing" because each night a little bit more is visible for a little bit longer.

• Quarter moonThe quarter is when the moon has completed

one quarter of an orbit around the Earth from. During first quarter, 1/2 of the moon is visible for the first half of the evening, and then goes down, leaving the sky very dark.

• Waxing Gibbous Moon A gibbous moon is a very bright moon. When

most of the Moon is visible we say it is a Gibbous Moon. Observers can see all but a little sliver of the moon. During this phase, the Moon remains in the sky most of the night.

• Full moon

The Full Moon is when the Earth is between the sun and the moon.

When we can see the entire face of the moon, we call it a Full Moon. A full moon will rise just as the evening begins, and will set about the time morning comes in.

• Waning Gibbous MoonLike the Waxing Gibbous Moon,

during this phase, we can see all but a sliver of the Moon. The difference is that instead of seeing more of the Moon each night, we begin to see less and less of the Moon each night. This is what the word "waning" means.

• Last Quarter moonDuring a Last Quarter Moon we can

see exactly half of the Moon's lighted surface.

• Waning crescent moonFinally, during a Waning

Crescent Moon, observers on Earth can only see a small sliver of the Moon, and only just before morning. Each night less of the Moon is visible for less time

After this Phase the Cycle starts again.

• Draw each of the Moon Phases in order starting with the New moon, and label each phase.

The different phase names are :-• New Moon• Waxing Crescent• First Quarter• Waxing Gibbous• Full Moon• Waning Gibbous• Last Quarter• Waning Crescent
