Problem or Question: Is a chicken egg hypo or hypertonic to tap water, Sprite,

    and or corn syrup.

Background: hypertonic- more concentrated or more solute than the solution

Hypotonic-less concentration or less solute then the solution

Isotonic- equal concentration; diffusion- moving from an area of high concentration

to an area of low concentration; osmosis- diffusion of water through a semi-

    permeable membrane

Independent Variable: The liquid solution that the egg, which is our cell in this

experiment, is placed in Sprite, corn syrup, or water.

Dependent Variable: Is the change mass of the egg (the water content of the

    egg)

    Controls:

The egg- which is a raw chicken

    Day 1: in vinegar

    Plastic cups

    Environmental condition: temperature

Hypothesis: If I place the egg in tap water, then the water will want to go through

the membrane into the egg because the egg is hypotonic to the solution.

    Materials:

    Egg-which is a raw chicken

    Vinegar- Heinz 5% acidity

    Sprite

    Water

    Corn syrup- Karo light

    Triple beam balance

    Cups

    Spoon

    Tray with cover

    Beaker

    Procedures:

    1. First we obtained all the materials

    2. Then, we used a triple beam balance to measure the mass of the egg in

    grams

    3. After, we placed eggs into individual cups and cover with vinegar and cover

    with plastic wrap

    4. Next, we let the eggs set in vinegar for 24 hours and then we drain them and

    rinse with water

    5. Then, we measured the mass of the eggs and record our observations

    6. Next, we added different liquids such as Sprite, water, corn syrups, and more

    vinegar to each cup

    7. Then, we let the eggs set for another 24 hours and measure the mass of the

eggs every 24 hours for 3 days

    8. After we measures everything, we returned the eggs to their same solution

Data analysis and claims: Egg 1 was submerged in corn syrup, and has lost 12

grams because the corn syrup is hypertonic, or more concentrated to the egg,

making the water come out of the egg into the liquid. Egg 2 was submerged inSprite, and gained 17 grams because the Sprite is hypotonic to the egg. The egg

has continued to lose its shell, and is slowly peeling off. Egg 3 is submerged in in

vinegar and has gained 28.5 grams. The egg is a yellow-ish color, and looks bigger.

Egg 4 is submerged in water and has gained 18 grams. It has gained so much

because the water is hypertonic to the egg. The egg looks very inflated.

Conclusions: We thought that the water would go inside of the egg because the

egg is hypertonic to the solution. We were correct, because each day the egg got

bigger and bigger. On day 3 when the egg was fully submerged in water for 24

hours it gained 12 grams, and from there, each day it gained 1-2 grams. I think my

data is some-what reliable because we didnt use the same weight every single

time. I think the egg might have burst and everything would go wrong. I also thinkthis experiment related to what we are learning now because the egg is like a cell,

and the liquid is like the things passing in and out of the membrane. And what

would happen if we put it in fresh or salt water, it will change.
