Ports in Ancient
Lanka� Among the ports mentioned in the ancient
chronicles were Mahatittha (near Mannar)
from about 1st Century AD with trade from
South India and across the Arabian Sea and
Anuradhapura the capital was accessible
along the Malwathu Oya.
� Gokkana (Trincomalee) became popular
with a shift to trading acros the Sea of
Bengal from the 7th Century onwards
leading to the shift of capital to
Polonnaruwa.
� Urutota (Kayts) and Godavaya (Gota
pabbata pattana) on the south coast, which
was a major entrepot for East-West trade
from about the first century AD. Other ports
developed used during Jambukolapattana
(KKS).

� 1st century BC - road network connected the then capital of Anuradhapura to the coastal ports in the northeast, north and east of the country.
� The roads in the coastal belt were added after the11th century with the migration of people to theseareas.
