RobertSchumann(8June1810–29July1856)wasaGermancomposerandinfluentialmusiccritic.HeiswidelyregardedasoneofthegreatestcomposersoftheRomanticera.Schumannleftthestudyoflaw,intendingtopursueacareerasavirtuosopianist.HehadbeenassuredbyhisteacherFriedrichWieckthathecouldbecomethefinestpianistinEurope,butahandinjuryendedthisdream.Schumannthenfocusedhismusicalenergiesoncomposing.Schumann'spublishedcompositionswerewrittenexclusivelyforthepianountil1840;helatercomposedworksforpianoandorchestra;manyLieder(songsforvoiceandpiano);foursymphonies;anopera;andotherorchestral,choral,andchamberworks.WorkssuchasCarnaval,SymphonicStudies,Kinderszenen,Kreisleriana,andtheFantasieinCareamonghismostfamous.HiswritingsaboutmusicappearedmostlyintheNeueZeitschriftfürMusik(NewJournalforMusic),aLeipzig-basedpublicationwhichhejointlyfounded.
In1840,SchumannmarriedFriedrichWieck'sdaughterClara,againstthewishesofherfather,followingalongandacrimoniouslegalbattle,whichfoundinfavorofClaraandRobert.Claraalsocomposedmusicandhadaconsiderableconcertcareerasapianist,theearningsfromwhich,beforehermarriage,formedasubstantialpartofherfather'sfortune.Schumannsufferedfromamentaldisorder,firstmanifestingitselfin1833asaseveremelancholicdepressiveepisode,whichrecurredseveraltimesalternatingwithphasesof'exaltation'andincreasinglyalsodelusionalideasofbeingpoisonedorthreatenedwithmetallicitems.Afterasuicideattemptin1854,Schumannwasadmittedtoamentalasylum,athisownrequest,inEndenichnearBonn.Diagnosedwith"psychoticmelancholia",Schumanndiedtwoyearslaterin1856withouthavingrecoveredfromhismentalillness.
Manfred:DramaticPoemwithMusicinThreePartsOp.115[German:Manfred.DramatischesGedichtindreiAbtheilungen],isaworkofincidentalmusicbyRobertSchumann.TheworkisbasedonthepoemManfredbyLordByronandconsistsofanoverture,anentracte,melodramas,andseveralsolosandchoruses.Writtenprimarilyin1848,itwasfirstperformedattheGewandhausconcertatLeipzigonMarch14,1852.ThemosthighlyregardedpieceintheworkistheManfredOverture.ComposerHugoWolfwrotethatthework"hasbroughttheessence,thefocalpointofthedramatoplasticexpressionwiththesimpleststrokes."MusichistorianPeterOstwaldwrotethattheOverturewaswrittenduringatimewhenSchumannwasfacing"exquisitesuffering"from"innervoices,"orauditoryhallucinations.
