“Montessori.” The word alone canconjure images of overanxious parentsjostling to get their 3-year-old into anexpensive, exclusive preschool inorder to ensure the child’s future suc-cess. Yet, the hype often obscures whatMaryland educators and parents con-tinue to find: A Montessori education, with its emphasis on engaging childrenby tapping into their innate curiosity, remains a powerful method for devel-oping students who can think deeplyand independently.

Features of MontessoriAn educational philosophy devel-

oped by Dr. Maria Montessori at theturn of the last century, the Montessorimethod incorporates a number ofunique features.

One of those is the mixed-age class-room, in which children spanning twoor more commonly three grades aregrouped together. Lainie Santos Tor-res, curriculum coordinator at Love ofLearning Montessori School in Colum-bia, said that while they’re sometimesmisunderstood as children teachingchildren, in practice mixed-age class-rooms are effective because they allowchildren to not only solidify theirlearning by sharing it with other stu-dents, but also to gain exposure to theconcept of mentoring.

“If you look at a lot of the big-namecompanies of today … they’re using alot of [mentorship] models,” Torressaid. “To have children do it is reallyjust modeling real life.”

Another feature of Montessorischools is the specially prepared envi-ronment. Each classroom is filled withsensory objects that aid in learning, and students make choices regardingboth what they want to work with andfor how long, said Tamara SheesleyBalis, head of the Montessori School inLutherville. “Our children have three hours togo into the depths of their explorationsand discoveries,” she said. The uninterrupted work time al-lows children to build self-esteem byallowing for challenges, Balis said. “Wewant them to learn to persevere and tokeep working, even if it’s hard.” And teachers are trained not to in-tervene when a student is deeply in-volved in an activity.

Above all, the Montessori methodplaces the child, rather than the in-structor, at the center of the learningprocess. While the teacher ensureseach student receives education in allrequired subjects, “the student pro-vides the inspiration and excitement,”Elizabeth Whitaker, administrative di-rector of the Montessori InternationalChildren’s House in Annapolis, wrotein an email. Teachers act as guides, rather than sources of knowledge, asis the case in a traditional school set-ting.

Montessori proponents are confi-dent in the wide applicability of themethod. “Most children are Montes-sori children,” Balis said.

Family matters For many Maryland Montessorischools, the admissions process be-gins when the parent of a prospectivestudent visits the school and observesa classroom. While the child also willbe evaluated for fit with the school, generally through a visit and possiblyan interview, parents must “have faithin the methodology,” Torres said. Thefirst step is seeing the methodology inaction. That belief in the method is impor-tant because the school and the fam-ily will work together in a child’seducation. Love of Learning looks forfamilies who will “help facilitate theirchildren’s natural development, within the classroom and at home,”Torres said. In return, families benefit fromschools that work to support them. Many Montessori programs offer be-fore- or after-school care that are aboon to working parents whoseschedules don’t conform to the aver-age school day. Families also can tap into whattheir children are learning and bringlessons into the household. “We develop a very close workingpartnership with the family,” said An-

Students at the Montessori International Children’s House in Annapolis provide the inspiration for their instruction, Administrative DirectorElizabeth Whitaker says. Teachers there act as guides, rather than sources of knowledge.

There’s still a place for art in STEMThe push is on for science and math, but arts education remains important

BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE

Special to The Daily Record

Key School dance teacher JayneKarsten was performing an onlinesearch when she came across a formerstudent’s blog. The student recalled when Karstenshowed her class how writing is like adance: After taking a few steps, she letthe class imagine how they would fin-ish the piece. “Ms. Karsten taught me about an in-terconnectedness of skills and organi-zation,” the former student wrote. Karsten was startled her lecturehad resonated so well that the studenthad remembered the analogy fordecades. She was not surprised, how-ever, by the ways in which arts educa-tion has an extraordinary impact onstudents’ lives. “The arts open up understanding ofjust about everything,” she said. They“can be the key to opening up a wholenew understanding with kids.” The Key School, which offers artsprograms from pre-K through 12thgrade, is nationally recognized for itsOrff Schlwerk music program. Stu-dents in the early to middle sectionlearn daily about various aspects ofmusical education, including speech, rhythm and creative movement. “It really is a wonderful program,”she said. “The Orff program encour-ages imagination and taps, early on,different things within students thatthey maybe didn’t even know theyhad.” Visual arts including photography, drawing, ceramics, theater, voice and

instruments also are part of the highschool curricula.

Ancillary benefits abound The arts “help create a vibrancy inthe school,” she said. “It encourages

imagination and confidence building.” Throughout her 25 years at the An-napolis-based school, Karsten said, shehas heard students discuss how muchthe arts programs helped them in othersubjects as well. She sees the arts as agateway into multiple areas of study. Aminuet can teach a student about math, for instance, while a painting can be in-structional in geometric patterns. “The arts can be used to clarify andreinforce the philosophies of a giventime period,” she said. Matt Micciche, head of FriendsSchool of Baltimore, pointed to studiesshowing how the arts help to shapeways of thinking in students and assistthem in other academic areas. The artscan enhance critical thinking skills, pro-duce the ability to replicate other worksand open students’ eyes to and appreci-ation for multiple subject areas. “The arts are one more venue where

students can find their passion or findtheir talent,” Micciche said. The arts’ creativity can also give stu-dents a sense of empowerment, he said, and reinforce feelings of purpose and ac-complishment. Micciche said he often sees students

who are talented in the arts also performwell in their other classes. “It gives them a reason to be excitedto get to school,” he said.

Historical appreciation Authorized to grant internationalbaccalaureate degrees, the all-girls St.Timothy’s School in Stevenson incorpo-rates art instruction through cultural re-search, helping students to gainknowledge of historical art periods ormovements, and an individualized ap-proach to studio projects. Traditional vi-sual arts courses are offered, includingphotography and digital media alongwith dance and theater. “Students become better, creativeproblem solvers in all walks of life,” saidLeslie Lichtenberg, St. Timothy’s direc-tor of communications and public rela-tions. “The arts allow students to accesstheir right brain and create an outward

expression of self. Theater, specifically, trains students to learn how to be com-fortable, be vulnerable and expressive infront of an audience.” The Friends School offers fine andperforming arts programs beginning inpre-kindergarten all the way up to 12thgrade. “That’s how important we think it[the arts] is,” Micciche said. In recent years, as schools nation-wide have re-emphasized science, tech-nology, engineering and math, or STEM,education, visual and performing artsprograms in many cases are the first tobe cut or receive reduced funding. Karsten said such thinking is short-sighted. Some policymakers have a blindspot for the arts and believe it is sepa-rate from other areas of learning such ashistory, language and science. The Key School makes art an intrin-sic part of all disciplines, Karsten said. Astudent may hate history, but if a teachercomes at the subject a different way —through paintings or dance — the stu-dent will eventually learn to understandmore and do better in his or her studies. Micciche said he is seeing more pol-icy papers encouraging educators to re-think the importance of arts educationthrough STEAM, or science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The Friends School hosts an artshow each spring, for which each stu-dent has the opportunity to put one ortwo pieces on public display. “The pride that they get from havingtheir work displayed is really powerful,”Micciche said. “It reminds them to keepat it and deepens their engagement in art.”

The arts open up understanding of justabout everything. They can be the key toopening up a whole new understandingwith kids.

The following pages list independ-ent primary and secondary schoolsin the state of Maryland, includingboth secular and religious schoolsthat are not part of the state’s publicschool systems. The list is basedon information provided by thewebsite of the Maryland State De-partment of Education (MSDE) andby the schools themselves. Inmany cases we talked to schoolrepresentatives; in some cases werelied on school websites.

Tuition figures are the latest avail-able. Many schools had not set feesfor 2012-2013 when we gatheredthis information, and schools oftencharge extra fees that are not con-sidered part of tuition. We recom-mend that readers contact schoolsdirectly to check on tuition and toask about additional fees, enroll-ment policies and waiting lists.

Readers also should be aware thatjust because the state licenses aschool to teach certain grades, thatdoes not mean all of those gradesare offered.

It is important to us (and to our readers) to keep the information inthis semi-annual guide as accurateas possible. Please bring any discrepancies to our attention by emailing the special publicationseditor at [email protected].

About ourschools guide

drew Kutt, founder and head of theOneness-Family School, a Montessoricurriculum school in Chevy Chase.Kutt said that lessons in such topicsas conflict resolution, acknowledge-ment of others and balancing technol-ogy with other activities can bepracticed at home.

By any other name As the Montessori method grew toattain its current level of worldwidepopularity, it in some ways fell victimto its own success. Torres said thatbecause the methodology is notpatented, until very recently anyonecould open a so-called “Montessori”school or daycare, regardless of his orher credentials, training or knowledgeof the learning materials. In Maryland, however, the stateDepartment of Education has put inplace new requirements to ensure thequality of Montessori schoolsthroughout the region. By July 1,2015, all schools claiming the term“Montessori” must be validated by astate-approved validating organiza-tion. According to the department’swebsite, schools will be evaluated on“teacher qualifications, written cur-riculum, instructional methods andmaterials.” Even with such a process in place, variation will occur. Balis said Dr.Montessori had not fully developedher infant, middle school and highschool curricula at the time of herdeath in 1952, so those areas continueto mature. The nature of a method that re-spects children as individuals withtheir own ways of learning means thateach child’s experience will be dis-tinctive. Ultimately, parents must takethe time to evaluate the course offer-ings of individual schools and makethe decision to enroll based on theirconfidence in the school and theirown understanding of their child.Nothing can replace a school visit, es-pecially given the longstanding mis-conceptions about Montessorieducation. “Once the misconceptions are ad-dressed, most people are actually in-spired by what Montessori offers tothe child and the family,” Balis said.

Alternatives If Montessori is not for your fam-ily, Maryland is rich in educationalphilosophies to choose from. Whilethe specific schools named may notbe best for a child when it comes tolocation, these educational philoso-phies are available in many schoolsthroughout the state, including thegreater Baltimore region.

Progressive education Green Acres School in NorthBethesda offers a curriculum basedon the research of reformers such asJohn Dewey at the University ofChicago and the Swiss developmentalpsychologist Jean Piaget. The hall-marks of the philosophy, according tolower school head Julie Gill, are a be-lief in the power of authentic learningand an experiential, hands-on ap-proach.

“We’re very much an outdoorsschool,” she said. “A lot of our learn-ing takes place outside and connectswith classroom learning.”

Sudbury model education Mark McCaig, a founder and staffmember at the Fairhaven School inUpper Marlboro, names three fea-tures that distinguish his school: com-plete intellectual freedom, democratic governance and age-mix-ing. All students, ages 5 through 19,learn through interaction in a “real-time democracy,” he said, rather thanthrough a set curriculum. Modeled onthe Sudbury Valley School, estab-lished in Massachusetts in 1968, an-other feature of Fairhaven is thejudicial committee, which handles allalleged infractions of school rules andon which all students serve in turn.

Waldorf school educationThe first Waldorf School was es-

tablished in Stuttgart, Germany, in1919; the method made its way toNew York City in 1928. At the Wash-

ington Waldorf School in Bethesda, children’s essays and illustrationsbecome their own personalizedtextbooks, class teacher Jack Pe-trash said. Other attributes of a Wal-dorf education include a teacherwho stays with the same group ofstudents from first through eighthgrade, block lessons in which thefirst two hours of the day are de-voted to in-depth study of a singletopic for three to four weeks at atime and a pre-kindergarten/kinder-garten curriculum given over inlarge part to imaginative play.

Arts-integrated education At the Lucy School in Middletown, the arts are “integral to students’ en-tire academic and creative evolution,”founding director Victoria Brownwrote in an email. The school’s multi-sensory approach combines project-based learning, improvisationaldrama, and the aesthetics of nature toactively involve children in their owneducation, and is effective for a widerange of learning styles.

difficulties are a child’s

primary barrier to success in other areas,

Gateway School is an excellent

place for him or her to grow.

Early intervention is the best way

to ensure that a child with

communication needs is

prepared for school.
