MAY, Kangaroo/RedEndurance—sticking with what you started even when it gets tough.
Car Time – Song: “If I Want To” - This song is easily downloadable in the Core Essentials store at http://www.coreessentials.org/shop-1/schools/core/songs-1.html for just $1.39 a song!
Open Wide – JUST FOR FUN: If you were going to run a race for charity, what cause would you choose and why?
DISCUSSION STARTER:Claire Lomas finished a marathon in… 17 days! That may not seem like such a big accomplishment until you know that Claire has been paralyzed from the chest down ever since she was injured in a horse riding accident in 2007. To walk the race, she wore a bionic suit that allowed her to stand and walk. Claire wasn’t even awarded a medal for her feat because she didn’t finish the race the same day it was held, but other people recognized her amazing determination and made sure she felt their support. Not only that, Claire raised over $325,000 for spinal research with her walk of endurance.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Rest – K-2: by: Barbara Helen Berger; Barbara Helen Berger brings beauty and power to this memorable parable from Tibet. A young boy and his yak bravely overcome all odds to get to Lhasa, giving a wise and simple message that will inspire children of any age to dream and reach for a shining goal that may seem “very far.”
3-5: by: Chris Platt; Thirteen-year-old Lily O Neil’s passion is Arabian horses. Someday she wants to be a great endurance rider like her mother. But a year earlier, when a freak riding accident took her mother’s life, Lily’s father sold Lily’s beloved pony and forbid her to ride ever again. Lily is determined to fulfill her mother’s dream of riding in the famous Tevis Cup Endurance Race. But how will she convince her father to let her ride again?
Experience: You’re almost there! Summer is right around the corner so don’t give up now! This month is the perfect time to learn the value of endurance as you patiently wait and work towards sunscreen and sandy beaches. So while you stick with the school year to the very end, start a fun family project that takes a little endurance (and teamwork!). As a family, choose a fun puzzle to assemble. Set up a card table in an unused area of your home or piece of foam board that can be carefully stored away. Lay out the puzzle pieces on your table or board and stick with your goal of completing the puzzle as a family by the end of the month!
