MADRASAH DARUL IMAN RENOVATION PROJECT YEAR #2 (2017)
Written by Grace Felicia
President Elect Rotaract Club Jakarta Metropolitan Rotary Year 2017 – 2018
PROJECT REPORT Starting from the 13th of February 2017, our new member of Rotaract Jakarta Metropolitan
named Grace Grayson had helped us out in looking for donation. The mechanism for the donation is
that we spread an e-poster (please see the pictures attached) to our social media assets and give an
explanation regarding the project. We were only asking for IDR 5,000 for minimum of donation and we
did this type of fundraising until the 5th of May 2017.
Grace also got a partnership with Frozbanana (a startup company which sells frozen bananas
with topping) to help-out with this project. The mechanism was: with each purchase of one birthday
product, they will give Rotaract IDR 5,000. The period of this campaign was from 10th of February 2017
up to 10th of May 2017. (see pictures attached).
On the 17th up to the 18th of March 2017, the principal of the school had hired a few local
people to work on the doors as well as the windows. Previously, the doors and windows were made
from wood and there was some decaying process can be seen on those items. From the donation that
we have gotten from Rotary Rockingham, we changed the windows and doors into aluminum frames
and added new glass on both the windows and doors. The plastering on the ceilings and walls were
done as well. (please see pictures attached).
On the 19th of March 2017, the Rotaractors from Rotaract Jakarta Metropolitan (amkroni, Ghea,
and Grace) did a site visit to the school to see the work progress. We also talked to the school principal
regarding a few things that still needs to be done and the quotation needed to finish up this project.
On the 28th of March 2017, the workers had finished installing the aluminum frames of the windows
and doors throughout the whole school. The glass on the windows and doors was also installed during
this day. (see pictures attached).
On the 31st of March 2017, the workers had changed some of the pavement in front of the
class rooms and installed series of tiles. The activity at the school was resumed to normal and the
school looked more proper, now that the tiles had been installed (see pictures attached).
On the 2nd of April 2017, the workers had painted half of the school (front part) with the color
of light blue. During the day, the workers resumed to do another coat of plastering on the walls and
ceilings to make sure that they are proper to be painted later. (see pictures attached)
Starting from 10th of April 2017, the work on the school had stopped, since the rest of the
school project will be finished by Rotary Rockingham, Rotaract Jakarta Metropolitan, along with the
help from #diberiuntukmemberi (a new social movement group created by young people who wants
to help-out the society).
During this period, the Rotaractors took care of the Rockingham Rotarians’ accommodation
during their visit to Indonesia. We booked Kampoeng Wisata Cinangneng for 8 nights and Neo Tendean
for 10 nights. We also did an internal meeting to discuss about the timeline of the project, labors
division, and details regarding the project (materials that we still need, quotation needed from the
school, club finance, etc.)
On the 25th of April 2017, Grace had a meeting with #diberiuntukmemberi to discuss about
their involvement during this project and how they can help-out. #diberiuntukmemberi agreed to
provide us with some materials (paints, rollers, extensions, sand papers, thinners, etc.), as well as
giving a few people to help-out during the D-day when the project is going to be executed.
On the 1st of May 2017, Michael Nella (President-elect of Rotary Rockingham) has agreed to
provide #diberiuntukmemberi with a bus to be used as transport to the location of the school, where
the project is going to be executed. In return, #diberiuntukmemberi provided us with 5 buckets of wall
paints, 6 rollers, 4 extensions, 8 paintbrushes, 1kg of thinner, 4 pieces of paint trays, and 3 small cans
of grey fence paint).
On the 11th of May 2017, the Rotarians from Rotary Rockingham landed in Soekarno Hatta
(Jakarta International Airport) around 21:30 PM (GMT + 07.00). Grace picked them up at the airport
and then drove them to FM7 resort hotel near the airport. After checking in, we had an internal meeting
between the Rotarians from Rockingham and some of the members of Rotaract Jakarta Metropolitan.
The meeting started around 22:00 PM and lasted for a couple of hours. At first, it was a casual talk,
just to catch up with everybody. Afterwards, the meeting was continued with the discussions regarding
how to execute the projects. Rotaractors from Jakarta Metropolitan gave the Rotarians updates from
our previous internal meeting. We were discussing about how many men power do we need to execute
the project, what are the materials that we still needed and what kind of materials that we have had
so far. The meeting was ended, considering the time and there were people who needs to go back
home and they have work the day after.
On the 12th of May 2017, the Rotarians and Rotaractors (Amkroni and Grace) whom stayed at
FM7 the night before gathered for breakfast at the hotel. We then continued our drive to the school
approximately around 08:30 AM and reached Madrasah Darul Iman around 14:00 PM. During our drive,
We stopped at a supermarket nearby to had some lunch and bought some food supplies to be brought
to the hotel Kampoeng Wisata Cinangneng.
When we reached the school, we took out some supplies that were brought from Jakarta and
put them in one of the empty classroom. Afterwards, we talked to the school principal regarding the
work progress had been done earlier and our timeline to finish up the school. We also did some
assessment of the work progress had been done and what were the next steps necessary that we
needed to do the next day. Afterwards, we went back to Kampoeng Wisata Cinangneng to checked
ourselves in and then continued by dinner.
13th of May 2017 was the big day for all of us. The Rotarians and Rotaractors (Amkroni and
Grace) got to the school by 08:30 AM. We started to paint the first classroom. Stephen Castelli and
Amkroni were in-charge of moving the furniture (desks and chairs) from the classroom to the courtyard
where the furniture will be cleaned and varnished. Michael Nella and Grace painted the ceilings of the
first classroom.
10:00 AM, the #diberiuntukmemberi team finally arrived at Madrasah Darul Iman. There were
21 volunteers that came to help-out execute the project. Michael Nella, then briefed them about the
labor divisions and then the work continued. There were people doing the furniture; they were cleaning
up the furniture and varnished it. Some of the groups were separated into 2 large groups where one
group were working on the first classroom (painting the ceilings, painting the walls, scrapping some of
the loose plasters) and the second group were working on the second classroom.
12:00 PM, the #diberiuntukmemberi team took a lunch break, where we mingled with the
Rotarians and some of the people from school and get to know each other better. Some of the
hardworking volunteers resumed their work and decided to take their lunch break a bit later than
everyone else.
13:00 PM, some of the Rotaractors had finally arrived! They got onto their work right away.
Some were varnishing the furniture, and some were doing some financial matters (cross-checking the
quotations, paying the bills, calculating how much money does our club still have, how much money
do we still need to finish up the project).
14:00 PM, and so the work continues… The first classroom was almost finished. The team were
already doing a second coat of paint on the walls, also the ceilings. The classroom looked lit up and
looked more spacious, since we were using a bright cream color for the walls. However; the second
classroom encountered a bit of obstacle since the plastering, both on the walls and ceilings were starting
to peeled-off when we tried to apply some paints on them. The second classroom team were now
scraping some of the peeled-off plasters from the ceilings and walls. Some of them resumed painting
the walls and ceilings that were looking proper.
The other team who were working on the courtyard were working as hard as the teams working
inside the classrooms. They didn’t care about the heat of sun or the strong smell of varnished, they
were working like machines. I could see from the classroom that they were working in a perfect
harmony and very synchronized. I could see desks and chairs were being moved to the other side of
the courtyard where all the furniture that had been cleaned and varnished were resting underneath the
sun, waiting to dry.
The other part I was noticing was how everyone were very fired up. No one cared about getting
dirty nor helping-out to those in needs. Even though we were separated into teams, we would back
each other up when the other team needed us. It was even more fun, since some of teams were putting
up songs from their phones. You could hear the teams singing while doing their work, even some of
them were dancing around while painting the walls and ceilings.
16:45 PM, the work has finally stopped. Everyone was looking tired, despite from that, we also
needed the paints to dry first before we could do other things. Michael Nella gave his appreciation
speech to all the teams, both Rotaractors and #diberiuntukmemberi. The speech was continued by
Rotaract induction of Grace Grayson. The day was ended after the induction was finished and we were
taking ‘family’ photos.
17:00 PM, the Rotarians and Rotaractors went back to the hotel. We cleaned ourselves up and
then continued by dinner together. During the dinner, we did evaluation of how the day went by and
how we could improve ourselves for our next project.
On the 14th of May 2017, the Rotarians and Grace gathered to have breakfast together at the
hotel and then we continued our journey back to the school. Stephen Castelli was painting on the edge
that cut the ceilings and walls. Michael and Grace were cleaning up the floors and some wrecks left
behind from our previous work day. Afterwards, Michael and Grace went to the second classroom to
do another coat of paint on the walls. We also scraped some of the peeled-off plasters and covered it
up with the ‘wall-filler’.
We stayed at the school until 13:00 PM and decided to go back to the hotel to cleaned ourselves
up and continued by lunch. Grace went home afterwards.
Starting from 15th of May to 19th of May 2017, the Rotarians were working to finish up the
school with the help from local workers. They have changed the gate, paint the fences, cleaned up the
pathway on the side part of the school, also cleaned up the plants in the courtyard. (see pictures
attached)
On the 20th of May 2017, the Rotarians checked themselves out from Kampoeng Wisata
Cinangneng and headed back to Jakarta. They arrived at 16:00 PM and checked themselves into Neo
Tendean, where they will be spending 10 nights during their stay in Jakarta before heading back to
Western Australia on the 30th.
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate,
to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
I would like to thank Michael Nella and Stephen Castelli from Rotary Rockingham for giving
their time, their energy, and their heart to this project. This project wouldn’t be successful without
them. Thank you for collecting all the money that we need to finish up this school project and thank
you for inspiring us that being kind knows no bound. No race, no country, no religion could divide us if
we have the heart to help-out our surroundings.
I would also thank Rotaract Jakarta Metropolitan for inducting me to be one of you and for
trusting me with a great responsibility: President for Rotaract Jakarta Metropolitan 2017 – 2018. Thank
you for making me feel like I’m part of the family. Thank you for your hard work and supports on this
project.
I would also like to thank #diberiuntukmemberi for your support during this event. This project
wouldn’t be finished without your support and help.
