Bell Tones For Christmas

BELL TONES FOR CHRISTMAS

Members of Mrs. Falci’s sixth grade took their reading skills to a new level by learning to read music!

Class members learned how to play “Silent Night” on the Bell Tones and provided entertainment

for the holidays. It Was Wonderful!

Organizers of the PTSO invite all parents, students and community members to join the organization.

Beginning in February, meetings will be on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:00PM in the chorus room at the school.

Students in Mrs. Skillman’s 2nd grade showed their appreciation for members of the armed services during November. Second grader Alexandria Knotts’ mother, Sherri Knotts, a member

of the United States Air Force, is currently deployed at a NATO base in Afghanistan. The students in Alexandria’s class decided to send thank you letters overseas to the members of

Alexandria’s mother’s base. According to Alexandria’s grandmother, Susan Murray, the thank you cards were a wonderful surprise and were greatly appreciated by all the armed services

personnel who received them. Pictures were taken of the soldiers reading their cards and were sent back to Mrs. Skillman’s class to show the difference they made on Thanksgiving 2011.

With information and support from the GST BOCES Distance Learning Service, Avoca Central School was able to participate in a unique distance learning videoconference project with schools from across NYS, Texas, and Alaska! The annual “Holiday Storytelling Extravaganza” was collaboratively organized primarily by “ConnectEd” and the Richmond

School of Texas and the Distance Learning service from the CNY RIC. During the Extravaganza, over 42 different 30 minute sessions provided readers who then connected to 1,2,3 or more classrooms by video conference to read special Holiday oriented stories. More than 132 classrooms from across the three states listened to the readings, including 15

classes from the GST Region on December 14, 2011. At Avoca, the school’s Tandberg Unit was set up in the High School Library. Mrs. Joanne Adams’ Kindergarten class had the unique pleasure of listening to readings by High School students from the Syracuse area. The Syracuse students are enrolled in an American Sign Language class and ended the session by teaching some winter sign language to the students. Elementary Library Teaching Assistant Kristine Sagerman read aloud with her third grade library class to students in Alaska. Later the same day, students in Avoca’s National Honor Society

read Merry Christmas Splat and The Gingerbread Baby to several classrooms, including 2 from Texas.

Basketball teams from the Southern Tier area participated in the first Stop DWI Tournament held at

Avoca Central School December 28-29th.

Avoca SADD Club Helps with Happy Holidays!

Since 2002, the Students Against Destructive Decisions chapter at Avoca Central School has been helping to provide needy families in the school district with some

holiday cheer. The SADD Club, under the direction of Avoca Central School guidance Counselor Heidi Burns, arranged for a delicious ham dinner with all the trimmings to be delivered to eight families, along with enough groceries to last an

entire week. Each child in the family also received a wrapped gift to open on Christmas Day.

The Wildwood Education Center on Bald Hill Road in Hornell is pleased to recognize students who excel in their Career and Technical Education programs. Each month, instructors nominate a student who meets the high standards of academics and career skills. Students are interviewed by a panel of representatives from business and industry. Josh is a senior from Arkport Central School and is in the

Welding program at Wildwood. He has maintained a high 90's average throughout the year.

Josh demonstrates dependability and initiative by having great attendance. He makes sure to help any student that may be

struggling. Josh completes his projects above and beyond the

requirements. After graduation he plans on pursuing a career in the

welding field.

Students of the Month

This month’s theme was Generosity.

School NewsKindergarten - During the month of December, students in Ms. Moccia’s Kindergarten celebrated the Advent Season by creating Advent chains. Students earned links for acts of goodwill. Student chains reached from floor to ceiling for helping their peers both inside and outside the classroom, keeping the playground and school clean and free from litter and many other kind and generous acts!

First & Second Grade - Mrs. Suzanne Hoyos recently visited the 1st and 2nd Grade and explained the meaning of the Feast of the Three Kings. Following tradition, Mrs. Hoyos shared a delicious treat commemorating this special feast.

Instrumental Music

St. Ann School instrumental students played some Christmas Carols during the December Christmas Concert at St. Ann’s Church

on December 19th. Instrumental Music lessons are provided at St. Ann School through the Paul Effman Music Service.

These talented students are led by Mr. Val Wolfe.

Vocal Music

St. Ann School students presented a variety of sacred and secular Christmas songs for their families during their December 19th

Christmas Concert at St. Ann’s Church. Remembering the most important part of the Christmas season, the Pre-K students enjoyed

singing Happy Birthday to Baby Jesus.

Intermediate School Music Students Present

The Hornell Intermediate Music Department just wrapped up a wildly successful production of Honk Jr. on December 17, 2011. More than 80 students participated in the cast and crew to bring the timeless story of the Ugly Duckling alive on the intermediate stage.

The production was moved up to December this year due to improvements that are being made to the auditorium during the remainder of the school year.

The cast and crews of Honk Jr. captivated their audiences with song and dance numbers like “Warts And All,” “Look At Him” and “The Joy Of Motherhood.” The very talented group of fourth through sixth grade tugged at our heart strings during “Different,” sung by Ugly (played by Alex Shick) and “Every Tear a Mother Cries,” sung by Ida (played by Chloe VanCaeseele). Other lead roles included Alex Ashdown as The Cat, Cole Yanni as Drake, Kuryn Newark as The Bullfrog, Jared Kiffer as Greyleg, Alisha Conley as Dot, and Julia Ashworth, Maggie Shepard, Britney Noyes and Kaleigh Burritt as The Ducklings.

In March (Music in Our Schools Month), the Intermediate School will host its first-ever Cabaret. Be on the lookout for ticket information for this upcoming performance that is sure to showcase more of the incredible musical talent the Intermediate School has to offer.
