You will also demonstrate a detailed understanding of the design process, including research, concept and design development, design documentation, and presentation. Designing for real-world application is emphasized.

Ours is a serious professional program for the serious professional designer. Our curricula delve not only into the conceptual and theoretical but into the practical as well. Our teaching is practical, focused on aesthetics, and geared toward application and business.

Real-World Partnerships

The School of Interior Architecture & Design (IAD) was asked to participate in an exciting collaborative project with the Four Seasons Hotel, San Francisco. The collaboration effort went beyond interactions with the hotel and extended to the Academy’s School of Industrial Design. IAD students were asked to conceptualize the future of hotel lobbies and provide the Four Seasons with innovative design solutions toward improving the function and aesthetics of the space.

The IAD team consisted of four BFA students selected by the department based on their diverse and high level of skills. The student team, led by our

directors, worked together during the course of two semesters. The students did extensive research, conducted case studies, and had client meetings to gain knowledge. This information was processed and developed, culminating in three final concepts. Each concept had a unique approach to the design of the hotel lobby and together, these options provided a wide range of innovative ideas to the Four Seasons’ upper management. The drawings showcased here portray a visual snapshot of the design development process.

ANTONIO MARTINS Antonio Martins Interior Design

Born in Lisbon and raised in Rio de Janeiro, a distinct set of variables led Antonio Martins to become a modern nomad. He traversed a range of exotic places, including Switzerland, Hong Kong and Italy — but his story began in his native Portugal. The country’s monumental architectural designs spoke to him as a child, shaping his lifelong design perspective. He calls it “smart design,” and it is timeless in its appeal.

His first design rule, if any, is to find something that conveys stature and personality. He is acutely aware of the feelings that connect people to their space to establish a comfort zone. Modern design is not something Martins rejects; on the contrary, innovative and timeless design is the key to his success.

Combining a background in economics, hands-on learning in the hotel business, and finally interior design, Martins has managed to engulf himself in every facet of his education—academic, corporate and creative—all essential to running a successful firm, as he does today.

JUSTINE ZIELINSK Designer, AvroKO Brand Bureau

After graduating with an MFA in Interior Architecture & Design, Justine Zielinsk sent her portfolio to a single firm: AvroKO, one of the biggest commercial and hospitality firms. She was hired in March 2012 and works in AvroKO’s New York office. She has contributed to an L.A. project for restaurateur Michael Mina, the new Dropbox HQ in San Francisco, and the various parts of the Santa Anita Racetrack remodel. Now, though, she spends most of her time as lead designer on AvroKO’s share in the redevelopment

of Denver’s Union Station, part of a $500 million project master-planned by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

The fact that Zielinski grew up about an hour south of Denver, and that her graduate thesis conceptualized what the abandoned 16th Street Station in Oakland might look like after being redeveloped to “reconstruct this urban pocket and to defragment its residents by planning an integrated community built around this beautiful and neglected piece of architectural history,” as she writes, only adds to this incredible narrative.

I’m really proud of being an Academy of Art University alumna. I recently was part of a portfolio review of senior students that came to the company, and the level of work and knowledge we have is beyond better than I could imagine.– Daniela Amelunge, Designer, Gensler”

DANIELA AMELUNGE Designer, Gensler

“In my last semester, when I was taking portfolio class, our director, Laura Blumenfeld, asked me in what company I wanted to work. My immediate answer was Gensler. Laura told me to focus all my energy in assembling the best package I could to grab their attention and, indeed, it did. My package was what got me an interview. I sent it middle of January 2015 and I was contacted 10 days after. My interview was a week later and went even better than I was expecting. I got interviewed by two great architects, Tim Bakos and Chirstian Amolsch. During the interview I was able to showcase all the work I did at the Academy the way I wanted, as well as my personality, goals, and discipline, which I feel was a big factor in being hired. After 10 days of waiting, I got a call from Tim offering me an entry level design position at Gensler and a visa sponsorship.

“The name of the studio I work at is Lifestyle 2, and we mostly focus on hospitality. Working at Gensler has been amazing. I learn new things every day. Between my co-workers and I, we push each other to create better solutions for different spaces in order to design better environments.”

Design by Daniela Amelunge, who graduated in 2014.

Classes led by Academy instructors will meet Monday through Thursday, and museum visits and daily excursions to small nearby Italian towns will lead you to seek and find the wealth of beauty that lies within Tuscany. On one of your weekends, you will have the chance to take your artistic exploration farther by taking a weekend trip to Venice, which is included in the program.

Disciplines covered during this intensive program include painting, printmaking, illustration, photography, and art and architectural history.

If you have an interest in fashion, you should look into our Fashion Scholarship Exchange. Offered through the Sister City Scholarship Exchange Program, the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University awards scholarships to study in Paris with Studio Berçot and L’École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Check in with your director to make sure you are eligible for this competitive scholarship.

How The Courses WorkCREATE YOUR OWN CLASS SCHEDULEWhen you take online courses at the Academy, you are free to manage your own time; there are no set class schedules that require you to be online at specific times of the day. Course content is divided evenly across 15 modules spread out during a semester. Each module’s coursework—instructional videos, audio-enhanced slideshows, digital documentation, interviews, and more—is made available at the start of each module period.

ENGAGE YOUR PEERS You may work and study independently, but that does not mean you cannot call on the support of your online classmates. Each course offers a class discussion area where students and instructors can freely exchange thoughts, post work, and provide or receive creative feedback. The discussion area’s sole purpose is to give you and your peers the opportunity to support one another’s development as artists.

To find out more, contact an admissions representative or visit www.academyart.edu/online-education.

Online Education

The program’s flexibility gives me great freedom to manage my time, work on side projects, and even come to study abroad for the summer semester!
