Learn about the hands-on programs at our Wellsville campus.TRANSCRIPT
Kayla Miller, of the Bronx, has been building row boats since the ninth grade and has always liked working with her hands.
That’s why Alfred State’s building trades: building construction major seemed like the perfect fit for her.
“I would take things apart and put them back together and I really liked woodworking, so I knew I wanted to do something dealing with that. I didn’t want to be at a desk. This major just fit.”
Miller, who would like to be a carpentry teacher someday, said she likes that she’s learning by doing at Alfred State.
“The book doesn’t explain how to do every single thing that you’re learning. You don’t really understand what you’re doing until you actually do it.”
The best part about her major, Miller said, is being able to see the end results of her work every day.

The School of Applied Technology at Alfred State is
recognized as one of the best applied technology schools
in the state and nation. It emphasizes hands-on training or
applied skills and offers the associate degree in occupational
studies (AOS). The campus, which attracts some 800
students annually, is located in Wellsville, NY, about 15 miles
from the main Alfred campus.
We believe the best way to prepare you for
the workforce is through applied learning.
But don’t just take our word for it... Larry Benson, of DALrYMPLE CONSTruCTION
COMPANIES has been attending the college’s career
fairs since they began more than 10 years ago.
“We really like to hire Alfred State graduates because of
the hands-on training they receive at the college. And we’ve
found they have gotten really good work ethics from going
to school at Alfred State; they turn out to be all-around very
good employees for us.”
Picture yourself here.
Going greenAlfred State serves as the lead college of SUNYGREENSNY developing clean energy technology training across the state. The focus is on workforce education in the area of emerging clean energy technologies, including photovoltaic (PV), wind, solar thermal, and geothermal. The goals focus on enhancing building capacity in the state by developing laboratories and faculty expertise to conduct training in these clean energy technologies. SUNYGREENSNY is funded through a $2.9 million New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) grant.

“I didn’t just want the piece of paper.
I wanted a good degree with an
in-depth education and real experience.
I wanted to spend more time under the hood rather
than just rushing through the theory.
Alfred State had just that—when I do get
out in the real world, I’ll definitely be
prepared for it.”
All three areas of study in the Computerized Design & Manufacturing Department offer 1,800 hours of related course work, theory, and hands-on practice, providing graduates with the necessary skills and knowledge to be highly successful in these dynamic fields. Both the machine tool technology and welding technology programs offer course work on cutting-edge equipment in a full-production shop.
