Dear Parents/Caregivers It was exciting to hear about the celebrations and experiences of
many of our Indian community as they celebrated Diwali over the
last few days. I was privileged on Monday to listen to a small group
of Year 3/4 students sharing their understanding of this festival and
connecting it to our own Catholic Tradition. Diwali is a celebration
of good over evil and uses the theme of light. Our own Christian
story invites us to always work for good and be the light. Happy
Diwali to members of our community and we pray that we will al-
ways be a school that works at being a beacon / light of goodness.
Catholic Missions Heart Learning – Last Mon-day we celebrated Heart learning focusing on the work of Catholic Missions. Crazy and odd socks helped us “sock it to poverty” and con-tribute to the work of supporting young people in countries including Cambodia, India and Aus-tralia. The theme, “Just as you did it to one of the least of these… you did it to me’ reminds us that when we help others we are helping Jesus. Pope Francis said, “all of us are invited to "go out" as missionary disciples, each generously offering our talents, creativity, wisdom and experience in order to bring the message of God’s tenderness and compassion to the entire human family.” Prayer – This year staff have undertaken a learning journey focused on the important place of prayer. Staff have explored various prayer forms and types to enrich the prayer life of our school. Together we have for-mulated a number of agreed practices for prayer. At St Gabriel’s we will pray in the morning, after recess with Heart Prayer, before Lunch with grace and at the end of the day. Prayer will celebrate key moments in the life of the Church and community and use a rich variety of experiences. Last term the External Validation process noted the following, “It
was evident that the work undertaken in the area of prayer and
meditation is contributing to building the Catholic Identity of the
school. It was recognised that the professional learning provided
for staff has helped to strengthen the connection between medita-
tion and prayer, which further links meditation experiences to the
Catholic Tradition.”
Professional Learning – This year staff have undertaken profession-al learning in teams exploring three areas of the Australian Curricu-lum (Social and Emotional Learning, Critical and Creative Thinking and Inter-Cultural Understandings). Staff undertook a cycle of ex-ploring data, coming to understanding the implications of this data and then designing learning experiences for students to address this. Last night staff shared their learning with each other. Diocesan Assembly – On Saturday, Bronwyn and I gathered with over 400 members of our Archdiocese including leadership from parishes, schools and communities to inspire, support and celebrate our collective efforts and commitment to a shared vision of a renewed Archdiocese. We have as an Archdio-cese committed to 8 markers / characteristic of renewal. Instructional Rounds – Today we welcomed teachers and leaders
from St Brigid’s, OLSH and Cabra
College who came to undertake
an Instructional Rounds at our
school. Instructional Rounds is a
process like the doctors standing
around a patient in the hospital
working together to diagnose and
make the patient better. For
schools Instructional Rounds in-
volves groups of professionals
exploring an area of practice that
the school wishes to have ideas
and support in making better.
New Garden and Playground – The new Asian inspired garden is
coming along well and next
week our new playground will be
installed on the edge of the oval.
Thanks to everyone for their
understanding during these in-
terruptions. Our new playground
is being installed on the edge of
the oval near the Years 3-4 build-
ing. Over the school holidays a
sun-shade will be installed over the playground. Hopefully the top
oval will soon be undertaking a face lift as well.
YOUTH/FAMILY MASS - This SUNDAY, at 10.30a.m. Children can participate in processions
and readings. Come 10.15a.m. All welcome. After Mass, we will process to the Rose Garden
where Fr Leon will bless the roses in memory of our deceased family and friends.

2018/2019 ENROLMENTS
We have begun interviewing for our 2017 Reception class. It is
always a proud moment when many new parents talk about how
they have heard great things about the school. We are certainly
proud of the students, staff and community of St Gabriel’s. It is
a timely reminder to all families who are seeking enrolment of
siblings in 2018 and beyond to please put in an enrolment appli-
cation and make an appointment for an enrolment interview. If
you have any friends and family who are seeking enrolment of
their children for 2018 and beyond, please encourage them to
make contact with the office so we can forward them infor-
mation about the school, or point them to our website.
