School Matters FROM THE HEADMASTER’S OFFICE

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:

Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.

And he replied: Go out into the darkness and put your

hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better

than light, and safer than a known way.

Minnie L. Haskins

I would like to welcome every staff member, parent and learner, especially the new teachers and grade eight learners. Seize every opportunity that Midstream College throws into your direction during the year. I specifically would like to mention our first grade twelve group and their parents. May 2009 be remembered for all the right reasons and may it be an unforgettable year. I am not hallucinating; the above extract was the quote and first paragraph of the first circular in 2009. DISCIPLINE Your co-operation is requested with the following:

Please refrain from handing items that learners have forgotten at home (books, lunch boxes, sport clothes, etc.) to them through the palisade fence during school time. These items have to be handed in at the high school office, where learners can collect them.

We further appeal to you to ensure that learners arrive on time for the start of the school day (07:30).

Academics NOVEMBER EXAMINATIONS Please note that all learners write until the last day of the term, i.e. 29 November and cannot be excused from the scheduled examination for extended holiday purposes.

2020 GRADE 12 IEB FINAL EXAMINATIONS The Independent Examinations Board has announced its examination fee of R7 115-00 per candidate for next year’s National Senior Certificate Examination. Additional subjects will be charged at R1 230-00 per subject and Advanced Programme Mathematics (APM) at R1 022-00. Current grade 11 parents are requested to budget for this, as your account will be debited accordingly next year.

GAUTENG NORTH MATHEMATICS TEAM Congratulations to Matthew Sussman (grade 12) and Anke Arndt (grade 8) who participated in the ASSA South Africa Mathematics Team Competition held at Tuks last weekend.

TABLETS Kindly take note that from 2020 learners will no longer be allowed to use their smartphones in class as their academic devices. They have to have tablets that meet the minimum specifications as set out on our website and that these devices are for academic purposes only. Learners may not have games on their tablets, as they are a serious distraction for them. From next year learners may therefore not have their phones out in class.

STATIONERY & HARD COPY TEXTBOOKS FOR 2020 The above can now be ordered at www.mcboekwinkel.co.za. Note that this website closes for orders on 28 October 2019 at 12:00. Information on how orders can be collected will be provided at a later stage.

Culture REVUE Congratulations to both our revue groups that participated in the finals of the Kaleidoscope revue competition. Both came fourth in their respective sections. Congratulations to the Revolution revue group that placed third in the Lefra Revue Competition with their revue A colourful compilation of contrasts. A huge thank you to all the parents that supported us during the glitter season and especially at last night’s finals.

DRAMA@MIDSTREAM Both our drama groups, Winkelpop and (App)-iness received an A+ at the Op die planke Toneelfees and an A++ at the National Eisteddfod’s regionals last week.
