Toronto, CanadaToronto is Canada’s largest city and number one
tourist destination. Located on the shores of Lake
Ontario, Toronto is one of the southernmost cities
in Canada – it is on the same longitude as northern
California.
The English School of Canada is located in the city
center, which is very convenient for our students.
We are located just two minutes from the subway
station, so you have easy access to all parts of the
city. We are close to libraries, movie theatres,
parks, and shopping districts.
Our city has earned an international reputation as
a safe, clean and exciting place to live and visit.
Students can choose from many things to do on
weekends and after school. Festivals, professional
sports, ethnic restaurants, a thriving music scene,
world-class museums and galleries, and Broadway-
style theatre will keep you busy when you are here.
You will also learn that Toronto is one of the most
multi-cultural cities in the world. Our students
enjoy exploring different cultures and customs
when they come to Toronto. Visits to Little Italy,
Chinatown, Little India, and Greek town will give
you a taste of our cosmopolitan flavor, and Latin
American clubs will sharpen your dancing skills.

Your First DayWhen you arrive at ESC, you will start your first day with a school orientation. This is followed by a placement test and oral interview to check the level of your spoken and written English. You will meet with the Registrar to discuss your academic goals , and create your personal class schedule.
Introduction to Writing 4-5
In this class, students learn the fundamentals of writing. By familiarizing students with parts of speech, sentence structure and context, this class provides students with a solid foundation in understanding how writing is different from and more demanding than other forms of fluency, and it prepares them for success in intermediate and even advanced writing classes.
Intermediate Functional Writing 6-7
This class allows students to successfully produce practical and functional pieces of writing related to many everyday situations. On finishing the course, students are able to use the appropriate register, vocabulary and grammar in coherent paragraphs, and formal and informal letters and emails. Students are shown how to work independently when brainstorming, outlining and writing, and they are taught how to identify and correct the errors in their own writing in a self-reliant manner.
Pronunciation 5-7
This class is designed for students who wish to sound just like English speakers. By focusing on minimal pairs and reduced forms, students learn to identify English sounds and produce them. The course also focuses on word stress as well as sentence stress. This course allows any learner to enter a conversation speaking with clarity and confident in his or her ability to comprehend.
Business Communication 7-9
This class assists students planning to work for at an international company. It guides students through the job hunting process by giving them the language skills to understand job advertisements, create a professional online presence, write an outstanding resume, and perform excellently in a job interview. Students are also taught language and communication strategies to survive in a variety of everyday business situations.
Basic Academic Skills of English 3-5
This demanding class provides students with the basic skills they need to succeed in college or university. Firstly, students learn about spelling patterns and commonly misspelled words. The course then moves on to cover basic reading, listening and writing skills. Throughout the course, students are taught excellent study habits and the ability to think critically, both of which are necessary to succeed in any higher education program. 5

Hello and welcome to the English for Academic Purposes Program at the English School of Canada,
The English for Academic Purposes - UCTP is a unique program designed to improve students’ academic English skills and prepare them for University and
College instruction in the U.S. and Canada. Since the launch of UCTP in 2006 we have been devoted to promoting high standard academics by assisting students in developing the personal and professional skills needed to achieve excellence.
Knowing how to adapt to a new cultural setting can be a real challenge for anyone. For students hoping to study and perhaps work abroad it means learning how to integrate into a new society. In the UCTP program we recognize this challenge and understand that students need to experience the situations and learn the skills that will help them achieve their objectives outside of the classroom. For this reason we
have developed a strong curriculum that reflects the needs of students from a variety of fields and disciplines.
Along with a great curriculum there are great instructors. UCTP instructors genuinely care about the success of their students and are always working to develop new strategies that encourage students to produce and perform at their best. They are committed to helping students integrate into the academic culture of Canadian post secondary institutions. As a testament to this we have now seen hundreds of graduates from colleges and universities all over Canada who have successfully completed their post secondary studies and who are either working in their fields or are continuing into higher education.
Finally, to future students considering post secondary studies in the U.S. and Canada the UCTP program is committed to helping you achieve your goals. We hope to see you soon,

“At ESC I made many friends from around the
world. The atmosphere is very friendly and cosy
here. At ESC, students must speak English. It’s
a strict rule. It helps a lot to improve your Eng-
lish. ESC is a great school. Thank you ESC!”

Karla LeirosAfter I finished the UCTP at the English School of Canada, I decided to go to Humber College to keep learning and improving my English skills. The skills I have learned from UCTP has helped me tremendously in my program.
Reinaldo GonzalezI am from Venezuela. After I finished the UCTP at the English School of Canada, I went to Centennial college and majored in Mechanical Engineering Technology program. Shortly after graduation, I found a job in my field.
Hyung Shin ChoI am from Korea. UCTP has become the stepping stone for students who would like to study at the post secondary institutions in Canada. I strongly recommend this program to other students.
Eri TakamatsuIn UCTP, we can improve our academic writing, listening and presentation skills through group work and individual assignments. This course was challenging and extremely helpful. It prepared me for college and gave me a chance to experience what college life is like.

Activities
Activities
At the English School of Canada, we provide our students
with a great selection of after-school workshops, clubs,
trips, and tours. You will have fun, meet friends and try
new things by participating in these events. Each month
has a new calendar of activities that you can check out –
they are all optional, so you can sign up for the ones that
interest you the most.
Student Services Team
The Student Services Team is responsible for making your
stay at the English School of Canada a comfortable and
enjoyable experience. From after-school workshops to
school picnics, our staff plan events to make sure that
you keep learning and have fun even after your classes.
If you need to open a bank account, plan a trip, find an
apartment, or just talk, a member of our staff is always
there for you.
After-school clubs and workshops
Try a yoga class, a shiatsu massage workshop, or the
photography club. Or, join the volunteer club to do
community service in Toronto.
Sports
Play volleyball on the beach, join the soccer team, go
canoeing in Lake Ontario, or rollerblade through High
Park. In winter, join us for skiing and snowboarding in
Collingwood. Don’t worry if you don’t know how – we’ll
teach you!
Activities
Visit a museum, go to a club on College Street, or have a
picnic with us at Centre Island. If professional sports are
your style, then come with us to an NBA, NHL, or major
league baseball game and cheer for the local team!
Accommodations & Airport Pick UpHomestay Program
Many students at the English School of
Canada participate in our Homestay Program. Homestay
gives you the chance to live with a Canadian family during
your stay in Toronto, so you enjoy the opportunity to
practice your English language skills at home.
Students also share in family activities and learn more
about Canadian culture and social customs.
Our homestay families are carefully selected to provide
our students with a safe, comfortable, and friendly
environment. Your family will be conveniently located
within 30 minutes of the school. At your homestay, you
will have a private single room with a bed, desk, dresser,
fresh linen and towels each week. You will also eat
together with the family – you choose 2 meals or 3 meals
per day. Homestay is recommended for students during
their first one to three months in Canada.
University Residence Accommodation (May to September Only)
Living in a university residence is another option for
students. Students live at the University of Toronto, the
largest university in Canada situated in the center of
downtown. Residence life gives students the opportunity
to live together with university students – enjoying more
independence plus the chance to make new friends.
Airport Pick-up Service
When you arrive in Toronto, it’s nice to be met by a
friendly face at the airport. You can choose our Airport
Pick-up Service and we will meet you at the airport and
bring you safely to your accommodations in Toronto. Look
for the ESC staff member holding a sign with your name
on it at the airport, then come and say Hello!
