District challenges: • Funding is tied to per FTE student enrolment and with
declining enrolment, core funding is on the decline.• Reduced core funding creates budget shortfalls annually.• Increasingly difficult to offer a full range of curricular and
extra-curricular program options.• Increasingly difficult to effectively staff smaller secondary
schools/programs. • District is operating too much space for the current and
projected enrolment and the district is not funded for space.

Board Decision – December 14, 2009The Board of Education approved a motion at the
December 14th Public Board meeting that the Beattie School of the Arts, Grades 8-12, be
relocated to the John Peterson campus of South Kamloops Secondary School for the 2010-2011

Benefits of Moving Beattie School of the Arts (Pineridge) to the John Peterson Building:
• Potential to stop the loss of students at senior grade levels.• Enhanced program for Senior students, i.e. greater course
selection.• Enhanced facility, i.e. labs, dance studio, drama, etc.• Potential when space permits to establish a K-12 Fine Arts
School at John Peterson.• Greater timetable flexibility and choices for Senior students.• Greater efficiencies in staffing.

Beattie School of the Arts – Pineridge Campus
Benefits of Moving Beattie School of the Arts (Pineridge) to the John Peterson Building: (Continued)
• Closer proximity to Sagebrush Theatre (as opposed to performing in an elementary gym).
• Better lunch options for students as we would share the food offered by SKSS cafeteria.
• JP campus is a more accessible location in the city (i.e. better bus route).
• Students have the opportunity to increase their peer group.• May have the ability to access more opportunities outside of
timetable.• Performances booked at the Sagebrush could more easily
accommodate McGill students as guests.

Disadvantages …• Sharing of space may create conflicts amongst students and
staff.• Loss of “identity” with Beattie School of the Arts.• Larger school population may be problematic for some
students.• No longer have the ability to pull students together as easily
for impromptu sharing sessions (Recognition Assemblies).• Will have difficulty securing time in the gym for school-
wide assemblies.• For students who live close to Pineridge, they will have to
travel farther to school.
