Cyber Safety is a Little Bit like Road Safety You would not allow your children to drive a car without lessons or a licence. You would not let them ride their bikes without the protection of a helmet and knowledge of road rules. You also make sure they know how to reduce their risk from harm by teaching Your child to look ‘left, right and left again’ before crossing a road. However, lots of parents let their children go off into the online world without much guidance, lessons or protection. Communicating online and using the Internet is like riding a bike and driving a car. It is lots of fun and gives children their independence, but for all these activities there are risks involved. We all know the risk for bicycles and cars. Some of the risks for children online include cyber bullying, identity fraud, connecting to strangers and excessive use. Some cyber safety tips for reducing these risks are:

Shoulder surfing - keep your computer and iPod use in a communal area at home, not in your child’s bedroom. Keep online communication visible.

Be in the know – find out about the different apps and things online by talking to your kids and other parents.

Docking devises – restrict use after a certain time at night for all family members and dock your devices on charges for the evening. Understand the risks - find out more from websites like Understand the risks - find out more from websites like www.cybersmart.gov.au and www.staysmartonline.gov.au and www.kidshelp.com.au

Asbestos Auditing and Labelling Program As part of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s health and safety management plan and to fulfil obligations under an Enforceable Undertaking agreed with WorkSafe Victoria, the Department is significantly increasing the number of scheduled asbestos audits with the application of warning labels where appropriate in Victorian government schools. The auditing and labelling program will be carried out over the coming years across all government schools. The audit for Monty South Primary School has been completed and labelling installed. The labels remind people to contact school reception prior to undertaking any works at the school to ensure they have up-to-date information from the school’s asbestos register. Asbestos - which was used extensively in building materials in the past but is now banned - is considered safe unless damaged or in poor condition. The new labels form part of a comprehensive program to ensure Victorian government schools remain safe.

MSPS Achievers

Well done to Courtney Jones who attended the Billy Cart Action workshop conducted by Banyule Council last Sunday. The workshop was advertised in our newsletter and Courtney took up the opportunity and did more. She won the Fastest Girl Time Trail (Woo Hoo) and won the Most Decorated Billy Cart - Girl Category. We may have a budding Mark Webber in our midst. Great Effort Courtney!

Wishing all our students and families a lovely weekend. Regards Leanne Sheean Principal

BUILDERS WANTED We’ve recently received a grant to build an outdoor classroom, ideal for garden classes rain, hail or shine! We’re looking for quotes from builders in the school community who would be interested in building the pergola. If you have these skills or know someone that does, please contact Jenna Farrington- Seear on 0406738220 or [email protected]. We’d like to have it up before winter sets in! Once the pergola is up we will be building a cob pizza oven. Anyone with any experience or knowhow on the matter of Cob or Pizza Oven building, we’d love to pick your brains! Please contact Jenna Farrington-Seear on 0406738220 or [email protected]

NUDE FOOD: To educate the students about the importance of considering ways to ensure a sustainable future, we are encouraging all families to send along school lunches with little or no packaging. Purchasing products with less packaging assists in reducing rubbish in the school year, which also reduces the rubbish that ends up in landfill. To promote the importance of this we will again be asking students to make an extra special effort to bring along “Nude Food” every Thursday. “Nude Food” must be sent to school in sealed containers free of plastic, paper or any other wrapping. The class with the most amount of rubbish diverted from landfill over the term will be rewarded with a certificate and a prize.

BUNNINGS BBQ We are looking for people available to flip some snags at our upcoming Bunnings BBQ. The money raised will go towards the Kitchen Garden program and P&F. If you can do a two hour shift on Sunday 15th of June contact Jenna on [email protected]

Happy Gardening! Jenna Farrington-Seear [email protected]

This week in the kitchen….. The students have concentrated their efforts on appealing presentation. We have discussed how food looks and what our first impressions of taste are - just by using our eyes. A creative array of edible blooms and herbs from the garden have garnished our dishes. Some very attractive and thoughtful presentation has occurred. The children have prepared some crusty three seed bread rolls, spiced root vegetable soup, a warming baked pumpkin frittata, Jamie Oliver’s rainbow salad and batches of streusel topped plum muffins. Some students have surprised themselves – they do like pumpkin after all! Please find the pumpkin frittata recipe following in the Hoot. The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Committee is now recruiting. If you are interested in participating or know of someone who would – please contact Jenna or myself. If you are considering becoming a kitchen class volunteer, we really would love your help. This program relies on the support given by our fabulous volunteers. We would love to hear from you! Please contact me, Cathryn Hulme on 0419 322 782.

2014 TEA TOWEL

FUNDRAISER

We are running a Tea Towel Fundraiser! The JSC is running this popular tea towel project to

raise funds for our new adventure playground and

boat.

Each year level will create a unique tea towel design

made up of the drawings by students and staff in that

year level. These drawings will be arranged into a

commemorative design and screen printed onto high quality tea towels.

We chose tea towels because the project allows all students to be involved and produces a wonderful

memento and meaningful gift for parents, relatives and special friends. A sample tea towel will be displayed

in the office area towards the end of this term. Orders will be taken early in term 3.

Further details to follow in the next few weeks!

Secret Agent Society Program for Anxiety Regulation & Social Skill

Development Dear Families and Colleagues We are very pleased to advise that Robyn Stephen and Associates will commence their next Secret Agent Society social skills program in July 2014. The “Secret Agent Society” is a spy-themed social skills program for children aged 8-12 years of age. The program helps children who have difficulty managing anxiety and need to boost their social skill toolbox. It is a wonderful preparation for Secondary School in the next years. The Secret Agency Society has scientifically researched results and uses innovative and well-targeted resources to engage children and make learning fun. The program makes a big difference to how children with social and emotional difficulties manage their home and school life. We are holding a free information night and supper on Wednesday the 25th of June 2014 from 7.00 pm – 9.00 pm at our Box Hill South Practice (834 Canterbury Road, Box Hill South) so parents and carers can find out about this program and see if the program is suitable for their child. RSVP’s for this information night are required by Thursday the 20th of June, 2014. Please email [email protected] or call our Practice on 9890 1062 (Box Hill South) to register your attendance. Please feel free to forward this information to any families you know who may be interested in the ‘Secret Agent Society” social skills program.
