SCHOOL BUS DRIVER INSTRUCTOR

This position, under minimal supervision, carries the responsibility for safety training of school bus drivers and school bus attendant applicants, utilizing both classroom and behind the wheel instruction. The function of this position is to prepare candidates, through safety instruction, to become qualified for the position of a certified school bus driver and/or school bus attendant. The position includes instructing and creating safety presentations for in-service and pre-service meetings to be utilized throughout the year to ensure health and safety standards of both the school bus driver and school bus attendant as well as on board evaluations and required retraining.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Certifies drivers to transport HCPS students and authorized personnel for our school system. Develops and conducts classroom training for new applicants as per C.O.M.A.R. and HCPS requirements.

Develops and conducts pre-service and in-service safety meetings in compliance with MSDE/COMAR requirements.

Instructs National Safety Council Defensive Driving and First Aid and CPR courses. Remain current with Special Needs certifications.

Helps to develop and organize curriculum to maintain state and county policies in the pre-service classroom programs.

Instructs driver applicants to drive school buses leading to the successful passage of the Maryland Commercial Driver’s licensing examination to include air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements.

Evaluates driver performance through on-board school bus observations. Maintains accurate and complete records on all drivers and driver applicants as required by the

Motor Vehicle Administration, the Maryland State Department of Education, and Harford County Public Schools.

Maintains accurate, complete and confidential records in compliance with the DOT/State Department Drug and Alcohol program in Section Title 49 CFR, Part 40.

Maintains accurate, complete and confidential records in compliance with the physical qualifications contained in Section 391.41(b), Title 49 CFR of the Federal Motor Carrier Regulations. Conducts accident review meetings and maintains accurate and complete records of annual accident detail and submits reports to MSDE.

Creates and develops safety displays, literature, and newsletters pertaining to public school transportation.

Utilizes a computer to enter record keeping data on all driver/attendant applicants, school bus drivers, and school bus attendants.

Serves as a substitute driver/attendant, on an as needed basis. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

SALARY Grade 10 of the Salary Schedule for 12-Month School Bus Driver Instructors ($40,949).

REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or GED. Possess excellent communication and human relation skills; conforms to confidentiality ethics. Possess an excellent Motor Vehicle Administration driving record. Three years of experience as a school bus driver. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint. Qualifications for the following requirements must be met within six months of employment

date:

Possess a Maryland Commercial Driver’s License with air brake, passenger, and school bus endorsements.

Certified as a National Safety Council Defensive Driving Instructor.

Certified as a driving instructor by the Maryland State Department of Education.

Certified as a First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor. Able to lift 40 pounds. Able to pass an annual Department of Transportation physical examination. Must satisfy all requirements listed in the Code of Maryland Regulations 13A.06.07 for school

bus drivers and school bus attendants.
