Science and technology are becoming the most pervasive forces in our globaleconomy and modern society. As our society becomes increasingly environmentallyaware, health conscious, and reliant on technology, it also becomes moredependent on students pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering, andmathema cs (STEM).

STEM majors are playing more prominent roles in their communi es and on aninterna onal scale. Both the public and private sectors are clamoring for moreAmerican students to pursue degrees and careers in STEM. If youve always beenfascinated by why and how things in our world work, consider a major in the eldsof STEM.

Selec ng a major is one of the biggest decisions of your college career. Not only will

your major dictate a lot of your academic path and college life, it will also greatlyin uence your poten al career path and, ul mately, your post-gradua on life. Witha decision of that magnitude, there are plenty of factors to take into considera onbefore you declare. Of course, youll want to major in a eld that you care about, that youre interested in pursuing a career in, and that you have the right skillset for. Youll also want to do your research and nd the strongest colleges withyour desired program, and, of course, youll want to look into the nancial side ofthingswhich majors have strong nancial aid opportuni es and which will pay oin the long-run.

The Center for Educa on and the Workforce at Georgetown University outlined theresults of the U.S. Census Bureaus American Community Survey Es mates in a 2012report that described the nancial returns and unemployment rates for variouscollege majors.

What is STEM andwhy is it important?

Not surprisingly, the report states that majors with high scien c and technicalcontent had the best job placement and salary prospects. According to the report, engineering majors had a 3.4 percent unemployment rate and the highest earningsfor recent grads, an average of $55,000.

Students who pursue a STEM-related major hold the best job placement and salaryprospects upon gradua on, as companies clamor for employees trained in scienceand technology. Yet, according to the U.S. Department of Educa on, only 16 percentof American high school students are interested in STEM as a career, said LaurenSegal, President & CEO, Scholarship America. Students in the elds of STEM needour nancial support now more than ever, as their work will widely impact ourcountrys future.

While the need for college graduated with STEM-related degrees is ever increasing,so has the availability of STEM-suppor ve scholarships. Everyone from privateorganiza ons to the federal government is o ering a rac ve STEM scholarships andgrants. Scholarship America has compiled some of these scholarships that you can takeadvantage of in your pursuit of an educa on and degree in the eld of STEM.
