Female students enroll at the University.
After a petition by social reformer and teacher Julia Tutwiler, the board of trustees authorized the enrollment of women at the University. By fall of 1893, only two women were enrolled, and only five were enrolled by 1896.

Denny Chimes is named for Dr. George H. Denny, president of the University from 1912 to 1936.
When Denny took office in 1912, the University consisted of nine principle buildings and 625 students. Under his leadership, the campus grew to boast 23 major buildings, 25 fraternity and sorority houses and 5,000 students.

Temple Tutwiler Alumni Hall is built to house the National Alumni Association.
The building was made possible by a $75,000 gift from 1899 graduate UA Temple Tutwiler, pictured with Dr. George Denny. Alumnus Paul Speaks, ’27, designed the building, which included a lobby, lounge and offices on the main floor, and two apartments and multiple bedrooms on the second floor.

Vivian Malone and James Hood achieve the first sustained enrollment of African-American students at the Capstone.
Vivian Malone graduated from the University in 1965 and James Hood returned to campus in 1995 to received a PhD. In 1956, Autherine Lucy was the first African- American student admitted to the University but was expelled three days later “for her own safety.” Lucy received a master’s degree from the University in 1992.
